Containers 2009 #2

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I noticed alot of you are getting coleus cuttings. Is there a reason you get coleus cuttings instead of growing them from seed? I'm planning to grow some from seed next spring. Thanks.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Seed gives me more coleus of 1 variety than I want.
Besids I like to see the little plants in "seed starter kits" all winter

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

Love the stump box !

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I do cuttings because I'm too cheap to buy seeds.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I do seeds cuz I'm too cheap to buy plants ^_^

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Well the plants I got from fellow Dgr's(Allison, thanks)

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I prefer cuttings because seeds take a long time to mature... and with the cuttings at least you have a better idea of what the color will be like... and it's just way too easy to do a cutting... nothing special just cut it and put it in some sort of soil, perlite, or vermiculite ... just that easy

let me know when you want some Dnut... I will ship you some

Port Washington, NY(Zone 7a)

When do you take cuttings to save for next year? I have quite a few that I'd like to save this year. I don't want to have too many plants indoors until I have to.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I started already... early this year... the best time to transition them is when the inside temps are close to the outside temps... with not having heat or air on... it's a good time for me

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I stuck mine in pots the first week of august up here. They rooted and grew on the deck in semishade under thw container plants.
I brought them inside a weekago.
Mostly because I wanted to be sure they would fit and have room left for yhe seedstart trays.

Port Washington, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks, I'll start this weekend. It's getting so cool at night now, I should get them started just to make sure they survive. I have so many great new ones from all the coops this past year plus I started a few varieties from seed that did well.

I noticed how quickly mine rooted, too. LOL so did the Basil I cut & stuck in a vase!

Thanks onewish for the cutting offer but you can't send to me over the border cuz of the plant police. ge1836 you are so organized already! I luv that your coleus have their own rooms ^_^ I so have to get my act together for Tuber Time. So far all I have done is pick my 2009 digging song.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Youve got lots of time.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

What was the 2008 digging song?

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Carrie 2008's was the theme song from the Mickey Mouse Club. This year it's 'If I Only Had a Brain' from the Wizard of Oz. Also I just realized that my dear friend Chef Pam grows coleus. I think she might pot up some cuttings for me and we can swap when she comes to town to pick up her dahlias from me. A truly botanical symbiotic happening ^_^

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

I love it! Music makes everything better.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

that's too bad Dnut!!!.. I forgot to tell you the shriveled up dahlia tubers I had in the garage LIVE!!.. thanks again for your help

:(

and yes you are waaayy to organized Ge

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

o ya sigh about the plant police onewish. Doing a dancing of joy about your dahlias. Alot think cuz dahlias are high zone they are persnickety but they are very forgiving.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

guess so... I thought they were gonners for sure

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Alot of shrivelled ones will reconstitute with a little TLC.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I am still waiting for my dahlia to bloom...about 4 buds..... when are they going to open????

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

1-3 weeks depending on how much sun you are getting and how cool it is getting at night flowerjen. Mine are starting to slow down cuz our nights are getting quite cool sigh. Oh I just looked at the date of your post. Are they open now? Maybe testing the air? They make me laugh when they do this.

that is funny D-nut

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I just show em like I see em onewish ^_^ Way too funny. They do this alot in the early summer if you jump start them like I do. Dahlias are smart. No way/no how if it's too cold or cloudy. No worries. Lots of time. The only danger is f*r*o*s*t.

Beautiful dahlia dnut!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Yvonne. Definitely my fav new one for 2009. Early and a continual mass of blooms.
You can get it at Ferncliff Gardens (a fav) and Parks Dahlias. Shall I ping you when the 2010 catalogues are on line ? Who me? A dahlia enabler? Naw.

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

You can ping me dnut! The owner new here wants me to help plan his gardens next year!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Cool phoebes!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Agree, love the color on that.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

That color is my absolute fave! One of the bathroom walls is that color, the bedroom walls are a darker version and the flower girl at my first wedding wore that color!
