Containers 2009 #2
great job Kassia they look great.... but I will start my nagging now... pinch the flowers off the coleus!!
nice container Kassia
I see Dexter, trailing red and looks like trailing queen plus goldfinch.
aaaawww too sweet.... very nice Kassia!!
Coleus is looking great this year.
they love our humid sultry weather
Or misty, rainy.
nice Ngam!
good morning
morning
nice Onewish
thanks... funny how the containers in prior years sometimes look beat by now.. so many of them are just getting into gear
mine sure are,I savor the month of Aug as Sept brings cold nights.
Our first frosts come mid month.
Thats why I am cutting coleus now in hopes for 5 weeks growth before I have to make my bathroom smaller.
Which AG is that?

now the question is do I attempt to dig it out of the container with the DL's and plant it in the ground or just use as an annual for this year... and let it go... I am pretty positive it won't live in a container through the winter
I would transplant now and hope for root growth befor frost or mulch.
My DH (like he's an expert) says next spring is going to be much dryer. i have some things that don't like it so wet it pots year round, Allison.
maybe or just make take other cuttings next year and just put them directly in the ground... not sure yet.. they look good covering up the DL foliage at the moment
I have had success with some of the ags in containers that are concrete. The medium has to drain very well here because it's so wet for 6 - 8 months. I planted them higher than normal & used chicken grit as a mulch around the crown. I am listed as Z7, but the past 2 winters we qualified as Z6, according to the local nursery owner. I lost a few ags that were planted in the ground (same way as previously described). I am gearing up for cuttings this year - just in case!
I am Z 6 Hope mine dont croak over winter.
I dont expect the Ag.Apache Sunrise to be here next spring because its not hardy in Z 6 I can always hope.
Katye have you overwintered them before?... I was wondering how they would do... last year I took cuttings and lost them to my holiday neglect ... things tend to die when you don't water them
:)
I was planning on potting them up in larger containers this year... but now with the large increase of coleus I want to keep... not so sure I can do that
I think I keep buying the same one over and over from HCG. I put it carefully in a fast draining mounded up hill in a container - they gave a dwarf or at least smaller Agastache that's supposed to be OK for z. 6. I first bought it 2007 loved it (in a container) all summer, then finally planted it in the ground. Last summer I bought it again (by mistake) and was TOTALLY SURPRISED when the other identical one popped out of the ground. Thos summer I had one in a pot and one in the ground and NEITHER ONE GREW! When am I getting my wheelchair-accessible greenhouse?
overwintering in the sense of pulling them up next to the house in the most protected spot & covering with a blankie when it dips below 32°.
I think they will do ok in the house - cool & dark. I would not grow in plastic containers, as they prefer a porous soil. But I am in a very wet area outside Seattle, so I get nervous about moisture retention in a container. Under the eaves - even better.
Very pretty, Allison! I love how your Angelonia look. I have those as perennials in Fla. and can't wait to see how they are doing when we get down there. BTW, I still have your red ti cutting for you. It just sits there, doing nothing, but looking alive. I'm trusting that your expertise with cuttings will help it to thrive.
Here's a barrel on our front porch.......
looking alive is good.... I have some shrub that turns real red from my neighbor that she insisted I try to root for her.. even though they are for z7 and higher.. they are the same way.. just idle.. no roots yet but not dead
that barrel is beautiful!!... love how the tri-color & and caldium are just screaming... funny how some look so much nicer with a back drop
Thanks, Allison and JoAnn!! Pretty coleus, JoAnn! Off to Vermont for the day!
have fun Louise!!... we had a bbq yesterday... I had a lot of compliments yesterday over the baskets with the kingwood karnival ... funny I planted those knowing they were going to get beat up being next to the bird feeders... and since I had two full trays worth of the cuttings... I didn't hold back planting them with extra... Randy make me laugh (and might be right) when he said it's the best fertilized spot on the property
this shot is from last week... and I swear they have grown a lot bigger since then
Louise, that IS so pretty!
What is the coleus on the right with dark paddle shape leaf w/ ping accent?
Allison LOOOOOVE your plants... you are so talented... oh I love it... dying to see you, the humminbirds and all the gorgeous containers!!!!
Love it Louise.... oh I want to see your garden this year!!!!
