Lovely blooms, that particular cactus has bloomed 4 times this year and each bloom only lasts a day. Which to me makes them much more special than roses! I like the anticipation of watching for a bud to bloom on them. LOL!

More fabulous photos :)
Cactuspatch ~ that picture is beautiful! Special roses indeed!

Sorry should have said MORE special THAN roses indeed LOL! Whoooops!

such pretty pictures. My mailbox bed is hopeless. It is looking so sad from the heat. I need to go out and cut down the sunflowers and the bee balm. Zinnia is not coming up strong this year but four o'clock is growing gangbuster!

I do have some brug buds. I didn't think they were going to bloom because it doesn't seem to get alot of sun here.

That is one great color zinnia! I love my zinnias too. I have some that seeded themselves out by my mailbox and are blooming there, more of the pink ones. What is special for me about those is that I would never water out there by the road and yet they are doing fine on their own with the small amount of rain we have gotten this summer.

huggergirl. painting rocks brings back many memories of my childhood. My Mom painted rock with us too! Can you imagine 8 kids all painting rock all summer long. We had quite the rock garden!
Post the pic of your painted kitty when finished. Your real kitty is darling!

Here is my Kitty helping me sort seeds yesterday. She was such a good helper!

hugger, that sounds like fun - riding on the Harley! I enjoy strolling through my garden in the morning when I water them. It's too hot and too much mosquitoes have hatched since we had all that rain 2 weeks ago. We went to a friend last night for dinner and I got ate alive by mosquitoes!

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

Huggergirl,
How do you paint rocks? I want to paint some rocks for the PNW Roundup. Also, how did you do the cat? You are so talented.
What bike do you ride? I ride a Harley Softtail Deluxe and DH has a Road King and a Gold Wing.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Lilimerci, do those sweet potatoes "potato"? I have been wanting to try some of those but its too late in the season now....I want the ones that potato too!

Leawood, KS(Zone 5b)

LOL Both the 'Blackie' and the chartreuse sweet potato vines do produce small 'potatoes' but they are pretty insignificant.

blossombuddy, I will be glad to give you some of those potatoes in the fall. I would send you a cutting but with the hot weather, I don't think it will make the trip. There is a way to store them in the winter, but mine just shriveled up. Anyway, I bought these little things at a neighborhood plant sale for $1.50 and they have multiplied this summer. The darker ones (Blackie) doesn't grow as fast and sometime they produce flowers, but I've never had them.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

An odd thing I noticed one year with ornamental sweet potatoes (Blackie and Margarita) was those in the ground produced tiny or no potatoes at all, while those in pots produced them, some quite big. I think it may have something to do with heat, that keeping the root zone warmer helps with tuber formation.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Oh, I thought those were the eating potatoes! I am not too familiar with sweet potatoes, but I do like the ornamental look of the vines. I see them growing in pots all around town everywhere and they are beautiful just was not positive if they were eating or just ornamental.

I tried buying the eating kind from a seed catalog and did not have any luck. My soil is pith poor sand and while it will grow a good baking potatoe, it has issues with a lot of veggies.

Does anyone here grow grapes? I started a dozen seedlings this year in the spring and they are now in gallon pots. I want to plant them on my trellis that is ready for any vine but am wondering how should I ammend the soil where they will go into the ground. I can add chicken poo or horse poo and was thinking that was what I should do, but since I have never grown domestic grapes before.. dont really know! Any help would be great. The soil is pith poor sand to start....so ok, what do I do?

lilimerci - the brugs that you have in the ground. How do you winterize them? I live in zone 9a, but we get just enough frost that it almost kills mines every year, and then it limps back the next. Because of that, it never gets very vigorous.
