May be it depends on the cultivar. I do not know what this gold/orange one is. But my neighbor doesn't dig it out. He takes a cutting just in case it doesn't come back, but it's been coming back every year and gets taller every year. Anyway, he cut it all the way to the ground and then covers it with a light layer of pine straw. That's it. No muss, no fuss.
I have heard another gardener in southern part of Georgia said that after 4 or 5 years, they don't come back as strong. I think the one my neighbor has is only about 4 year old, so we will just have to wait and see. If you'd like a cutting of this no id cultivar, just dmail me in October or early November and I will be glad to send cuttings for postage. I can take photo if you want to see the blooms.
Summer ... show you'r pic's #3
LiliMerci,,love all of your blooms,I love geraniums, never had luck with them though.
thanks. is it because it's too cool up there?
LiliM...
That blue and white morning glory is stunning!!!
Thanks Highmtm.
huggergirl, this is my first year growing them. I never bought them in the past because I thought they were hard to grow but they are not at all.
Huggergirl...
Ya know.... I thought I was the only person in the world who has trouble growing Geraniums! I can (and have wintered them over
with ease), but they ALWAYS bloom goofy. I get a nice outer
bloom but the centers just sort of fizzle. I never get those big
full blooms like I see on other people's Geraniums...don't ask
me why? It's crazy...lol I grow orchids like weeds, but I am
a Geranium failure...lol
I bought some of those too. I like them, they were pretty and looked like pansies but they don't seem to bloom alot, so it may not be just you.
Here is a nice surprise this morning at my mailbox. Black eyed susan vine (Thunbergia). This vine came back from last year. I love the blooms. They are not good seeds producer and has to be hand pollinated.
Lili, love that vine,my mailbox planting died:(
and Blossombuddy.....we have killer grape vines across the back yard fence that we inherited with the house....we don't try to produce grapes...letting the butterflies and bees do all the pollinating for us.....
Whatever berries/fruits go to the jays and ground rodents...so I'm afraid I'm not much practical help for you there....
I can tell you it's zone 6b.....very full sun....and incredibly ordinary soil...
Well, Q, the grapes are going into some very ordinary pooooor sand! LOL! I think I will put some manure with them, just was not sure where to do chickenpoo or the horse manure!.. I am soooooowanting grapes not just vines. My woods are full of grape vines, but no grapes! And all wild ones. These are domestic purple seeded of some description and all I know is they were yummy! (Zone 5)
Everyone here, ya'll have some lovely plants and pics!!!
Q, what kind of Clematis is that blooming? I think I have that one too and no label. Little white flowers?
I have a Black and Blue salvia and the seeds must be small because I never notice them. Geraniums do love the heat and thrive in pots on my porches. Last winter was especially mild and some even overwintered.
No new photos but here is a link to my flickr set of this years garden shots.

I love your Disneyland roses. They are so pretty.
The Disneylands are one of my favorites too, but the pink climbers Dream Weavers are my overall favorites. I just love roses. The purple spikes remind me of my salvias that I cut back earlier and are not in bloom again.
Congrat's That is a beauty.
I have had one for three years now and still no bloom , but I keep it in hopes.
Does the brug have to be a certain age before it blooms?
Awesome!! Maybe I wil try those. Rooting in water here will be interesting..... my water is extremely hard. so hard you dont need a glass to hold it to drink it!! LOL!.. So if they dont like hard water, I may have to work on that. LMK!
You guys must be hauling these Brugs into a greenhouse during the winter...right?
The scent from Brug blooms is heaaaaavenly!
Those are beautiful.
The first couple of winters I hauled the mother plants in, but space is at a premium in my basement and I have to hire help to drag them in, so for the last two winters I have just taken cuttings (they grow so quickly) and let the big plant die. Last year I took hardwood cuttings and rooted them in a bucket of water in my basement. Here's how one of the cuttings looked in January of this year.
Wow Lea...you have the TOUCH for sure. Thanks for posting the photo.
It never occurred to me to just root them over winter and grow them in spring. They smell divine yes!? I think we lack the summer heat to really get them going well. My were always ready to bloom about Sept...and then the weather would change.
Off to work.. poof*
bea, those were beautiful blooms back there,I love that pink glad
Sorry for the delay in reply...we're on vaca here and daytripping alot...
I believe that Clematis is Huldene.
Is that variety very fragrant and covered with blooms? I had one many years ago that was a late-season bloomer with small, white blooms. It was intensely fragrant, but I don't know the name.
Another that's flowering now in my yard is C. virginiana, with clusters of little white blooms that may be closer to dime sized than nickle sized.
