New Garden Projects This Year #4

Thomaston, CT

I have so much to do it's paralyzing me----Can't really do much until the phlox stop blooming.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

I got started on an ongoing project today that I had started way back in the spring but ended up on the back burner. I'm redoing my white and yellow garden. Moving things around and incorporating a lot of cow manure in it. I got quite a bit done today. Took pics but will have to post another time. Didn't get before pics, though. Will have to look through my pics to see if I took any earlier in the year.

WOW! Everyone has been really busy this summer. This is what my garden on the canal started out looking like. Eleanor

Now it looks like this! I still have lots of work to do, but the majority of the hard work is done.

sitting area. Our chipper is under the blue tarp. We still have to put up a small storage shed to put that in.

Wow--what a difference---it's just a lovely spot to view the canal.

And a closer view of Colin's catterpillar - cement stepping stones.
What was done:
The area on the edge of the canal has landscape fabric with mulch on top. There were a lot of roots and stumps in that area so instead of digging them up and causing eroison of the canal bank I covered it. Hoping to keep the poison ivy out. Some of the area was OK for planting shrubs and perennials and put in garden beds. I dug up the area where the grass is and sowed the grass seed so it can be mowed to keep the weeds down. The grassy area is the pathway to the canal so Jenn can put her kayak in the water. Then for the path down the slope I used bark mulch. Jenn has built a foundation for the shed out of 2'X2' cement patio blocks. That does not show in any of the pics. She was pulling out roots in that area when she was digging and got poison ivy on one of her hands very badly. I'm hoping no one else will get poison ivy again cause it is either covered with landscape fabric and mulch or in a place where we will not be digging. When it sends up new shoots it will be shot on sight - with Round-up!! Eleanor

Thanks Robin! There is a walking trail on the other side of the canal and people passing by tell me how much they are enjoying it. Eleanor

This is the new Woods Walk Garden.
There are no before pix because its where I stored thoughtless hostas and other plnts I wasnt crazy about. Also stored the garden cart.
There will be some limb cutting to allow more sun for the daylilies planted in as many bare spots as possible.
The DL's are planted down both sides and in a semicircle around the end stone.

Eleanor your canal walk garden is wonderful. What a difference all that hard work has made. Love the caterpillar stones and you must get so much use from this area now. Enjoy, you have certainly earned it.
JoAnn you have put those nice gifted stones to good use and next year when all those DLs bloom, wow is it going to be great. Great work all.

I'm so excited for you and Anna, because I know just how much you wanted to see this happen, and boy has it happened!!! Tell Gregg that his stone work is awesome! So much room to plant lots of things now! Yippee! Congrats on a great job to you all!

JoAnn - your Woods Walk Garden has really come along beautifully too! You guys have been very busy between raindrops this summer!!! Wow!!!

Here's today's shot of my garden shed's new gardens. The straw is covering the grass seed in front. The transplanted plants and the impatiens have come along nicely and seem to like their new home!

I did a double post not too long ago ... LOL... funny how we come on here everyday and still make boo boos like that

filled in nicely Louise!!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

you can say that again anytime you want to DonnieB ^_^

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

LOL! Louise, looking great! Can't wait to see it in person!

About the double posting, I found a way on my internet options to set it so it ignores extra clicks. It seems to work 99% of the time. It comes in handy because sometimes you can't tell if it's going through so you give it an extra click. The computer will know it's already trying to load and not do it twice.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

I can always tell if it's still loading by checking the bar at the bottom. It tells you if it's waiting, transferring data, etc. It's the narrow bar right above where the start button is.

Karen

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Yes true, normally I can tell that way but sometime either the computer or DG is acting up and things seem glitchy. It doesn't happen a lot but once in a while.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Louise your new shed garden is looking very nice. Nice and colorful for this part of the season and goes very well with the shed color. Very well enclosed with those rocks, I like it.

Thomaston, CT

Yes, you have been busy, Louise! The gardens look like they've always have been there. Can't wait to see it in person.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Thanks everyone! I think the double post came from it taking two forevers to send, so I thought I had not hit send yet. Somehow, my start button jumped to the top of the machine and when I installed Google Chrome, I lost that bar that showed you how far along your loading was going. Not sure why...now I have to just guess. I tried to delete the double post, but now it has left the photo. Duh!

Sure am looking forward to having you guys come over for some fun! I just realized that my entire daylily bed behind the stone wall in the back yard where we will put the chairs near the fireplace will be ugly as sin when you come. Uh oh. Probably not the best timing for seeing any blooms in the gardens, but I didn't want to do it at a time that would take away from either Kathy's or Karen's RUs. The main thing, though, is to get together and have fun and overeat. Right? LOL

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

LOL! You could always put mum in the garden, Louise, and put out pumpkins!

Karen

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

I actually did that one year when we had a party here in September. I spent a fortune on mums that year and none of them made it to the next year. Ugh. I'll have to assess the scene and see what I can do. What if I just tarp it? LOL

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Better idea - I'll print out photos of how the daylilies look in July and paste them on the stubs! LOL

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

LOL!!!! Great idea! I know mums are quite costly, and most don't come back. Maybe you could try mulching them. I think you have to mulch after the ground freezes. I think it's the freeze/thaw cycle that gets them, or frost heaving. I've had some come back, but most never do for me.

Karen

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I was told that they need to be planted in spring if they have any chance of making it through our winters. I don't know if these count as mums to you but I have Clara Curtis and Sheffield which are both hardy. They look more like Daisies compared to the double pom pom type mums. There are quite few you can pick from. LasyS's Farm has a good selection. Another good late bloomer is the Montauk Daisy. I just put one in this spring so I am excited to have it in my own yard now. Usually I just admire everyone else's.
