New Garden Projects This Year #4

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

That's going to look great! Please keep us posted on your plan. I'm planning swoops this winter ^_^

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Okay dnut what is meaning of "swoops"?
Thanks for the encouragement. There is a long winter ahead and many catalogs and threads to change everything, but I think it will be very much like I have described. Now if it can get done and it even vaguely resembles what I have pictured in my head, I will be a very happy gardener.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

A small swoop http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=6786528. I'm planning some biggies for next year ^_^

Note: Carrie officially approved the hyjacking of her birthday thread into edging and swooping and monster DLs and other stuff.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Oh, who knew...I am planning a swoop too. LOL I will have to tell DH not to worry it is not a sticking out bit, it is a swoop. More's the better. Thanks dnut.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Pat, that'll look great. Nice to have plans to dream about when it's too hot or too cold to work outside. Good luck on your 'swooping'! You've already got the DH's approval, so that's half the battle right there.

Now that I know what swooping is, I do that every year - inch by inch. It will take forever to get very far, but I just tell DH it will make mowing the lawn easier!! Tee Hee!! Everyone keep on swooping!! Eleanor

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I'm about to swoop now. I extended about 6 inches last fall and will add another 6 inches today. Hardly notice it that way.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Sounds kinky - I like it.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

LOL! Victor, too funny!

Right now I'm working on reviving an old bed that was full of weeds and unnamed daylily crosses. Digging out all the DL's to ship to people for postage. Will dig up the whole area, incorporate manure and compost, move other DL's over there, sow new DL seeds collected from last year, and just keep the whole area mulched to keep down the weeds.

Karen

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Sounds like a good plan Karen. Never did get the mulch down everywhere this year and with all the rain the weeds are just terrible. Hope you do better with your mulching.Looking forward to pics of new area when you're done.

Thomaston, CT

I'm still in limbo with one perennial bed---can't decide whatI want in there, other than the phlox now blooming, & 2 rose bushes---and it might be too shady for the roses!

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I never got mulch down either. I spent two hours this evening pulling full gown grass out of my front beds. And about 5 hours on Friday out front. I need to get some mulch! : )

Thomaston, CT

I've been doing the exact same thing, Meredith! But even the beds that I mulched this year are full of tall grass----it's just a little easier pulling it out.

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

DH is making me a new compost bin. Hopefully I can use the compost for mulch.

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

Bin in progress. To the right is the old one. Outgrew it a while ago. The dirt in the new one is what was left after clearing out all the brush from the corner. DH extended the new bin 4 ft. when he discovered I'd grow out of this one fast.

New bin complete with front and doors. I should have plenty of room for all those nasty weeds!

Nice!

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

Door opens so I can get to the good stuff.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Very nice.

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

This is how I keep it open to get to the good stuff. DH is very handy.

Thanks, I'm looking forward to filling it. It should generate more heat than the old one. There is good stuff under that one too btw.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I like this design:

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

I had a small black plastic one like that years ago. This one looks like it's more flexible as it can be made to the size you need.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

That's what I like about it. Also - you can remover as many panels as you like to harvest. And great air circulation.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Your DH did a great job. Looks like you will have lots of room now.
Those brackets look like a good idea Victor. I like the slanted boards idea to channel extra moisture into bin. I bookmarked them for future use.

Thomaston, CT

Talented DH, Jumper! My compost is just a heap in the back yard, but it's very woodsy back there.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Robin, I think the grass is easier to pull when it's tall too, only problem here is I think I let it get a tad too tall! lol Some of it already had seed heads! I am usually so good about pulling weeds but I had a lot of different projects and not enough time for everything. I'm sure you know the feeling. : )
Jumper that is a great compost bin, I'm still working on mine. Right now I've just been throwing old potting soil and all the good kitchen scraps there. So I don't really have a real compost pile yet. But I do have gourds that volunteered in it. They have been keeping my kids and visitors kids happy. They all leave with a mini pumpkin : )
Victor thanks so much for sharing that link, I have been eyeing someones compost bins that used those exact brackets. I kept wondering where in the world they had found them - now I know! Maybe I'll get some now. : )

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

Where DH built the new one it used to be just a heap. He thought it was time to make it look nicer. It measures 4' x 9' and is 3' high. It should last a while!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

That's a great compost jumper2! Luv the hooky thing to hold the door open.

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

Yeah, it helps so I can get at the good stuff. DH is very handy!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

How is he with patios? ^_^ My poor true luv has bogged down

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

dnut you have the power to get him going

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Very nice, Jumper! I'm jealous! I wish I had a handy DH. Those composting brackets that Victor posted are more my style, as I'm not so handy at putting things together. The brackets look simple, and the price is good, too.

Karen

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

He hasn't done one yet.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

wha I mentioned last night that I was diassembling his wha wall of patio stones this weekend cuz I need to plant under it and he perked right up so maybe he will get back at it this weekend ^_^ O wait maybe the 'perking up' part was a result of me spraying him with the hose.

spraying him with a hose will get his attention - also withholding services like cooking dinner, laundry, or what ever else might be critical to him will work as well :) maybe refusing to preform a dahlia dance??

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Actually he does most of the cooking and does his own laundry. I am responsible for dancing and singing and gardening. I don't mind if he pokes along at the patio as long as it gets done sometime. I want to have a Tea with the Dahlias next summer with gloves and hats and cravats on the new patio ^_^

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

Sounds cool, D-nut.

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

DH fixed my arbor going into the back yard. The top is original, the rest was flimsy and needed replacing. This is the view from the back yard.
