I liked it. It was sort of fun wondering around the hallways with only enough light to see 5' in front of ourselves.
Garden Photo's 09 ......# 36
I never mind sitting in a dim room... pretty smart to do that
Definitely my preferance. It would've been an an aweful day in there had they opted for lights, but no AC!
a men
you know it... Randy and I are opposite when it comes to lighting.. we have a dimmer switch in the living room (thank god)... when he is in there alone the lights are blasting... I always ask if he can turn down the sun
I agree with you Allison!
These were the weather maps from today shown on tonights news. The first picture will make more sense when you see the second one. The towns shown in orange aren't large enough to be put on the regional news map. So they listed the official highs reported from those towns on the next screen. I live nearest to Oakridge, which reported 111 deg. They think that the temp. gauge at Mckenzie Bridge might be askew, I'm sure that it will be checked here soon.
I was just trying to remember what it was like before AC.It was in public use in the late 1940's.
How did big buildings function then.
New York and Chicago tenements must have been unbearable in a heat wave.
Many died I guess.
I remember the first public place where there was AC
Resturants used to advertise "Its Cool Inside" they had mor patrons than anyone else.
Movie Theaters too.
This was the era before big stores and convenient Malls(that are no longer convenient) shopping downtown was a headache.
I guess stored had little business duering July.
Today is going to be a relief for my plants! It's supposed to top out at 100 and I think those few degrees make a huge difference at that point.
They talked about that a little tonight on the news as well. They said that the theatres had been packed for the last few days..... Just as it used to be.
I'd never lived in a place with Ac until just the last few years. I love it. However, while miserable, we always managed in the past.
My grandmother said that it wasn't uncommon for the local churches, that we situated in the shade, to take in anybody that didn't have the ability to get to cooler places.
glad I don't live there... those temps are crazy
That they are! But, that's not normal! lol. The last two days didn't just barely break records, they absolutely shattered them.
awfull,hope it breaks soon.
Shelly, you're getting the same temps that Texas and Arizona are getting. They will be talking about this heat wave for years to come. We have been complaining of temps in the 80's with tropical humidity. What's your humidity like, Shelly? I know that kind of heat is bad with or without it, but it's so much worse when the humidity is up there. I remember the dry heat in Arizona, though much hotter than here in the northeast, wasn't nearly as bad as sticky 80's and 90's here.
I'm like Randy, Allison, I like the lights nice and bright in the house, especially during the winter months when there is so much less daylight. Lately, though, with the heat up (though not like where Shelly is!), I've been keeping the lights down in my bedroom, as more lights on leads to a hotter room. I don't need to add to the heat already present.
Karen
All that beautiful stonework really shows off what has been planted around them, Jo Ann! I can't tell you how envious I was that your neighbor gave you so much!
Warning: History lesson follows ......

I believe the first building with "air conditioning" was right here in Buffalo, 1904. Frank Lloyd Wright's Larking Building. Anyone remember Larkin Soaps??
"The five story red brick building was noted for many innovations, including air conditioning, stained glass windows, built-in desk furniture, and suspended toilet bowls (hung from the walls, not supported by the floor)." Woo Hoo ... no more outhouses!!!!
If you are interested in reading some more about this building and its sad fate:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larkin_Administration_Building
Buffalo, in its usual habit demonstrating lack of foresight, destroyed the building in 1950 and today it sits as an abandonded parking lot, though the warehouse built for it a bit later on still stands .... next to the empty field full of weeds, though Wright did not build that.

Your ligularia looks great, Jo Anne!
Too bad that original building got destroyed. FLW sure was an amazing architect.
Karen
Thanks for the background Willi
There is a FLW house here on East Blvd.Friends of mine owned it.
Its a H--- of a place to live as its designated as a landmark.
No modernizing of the kitchens or baths.
They had to build a modern kitchen w/ refrigerator in the basement.
The FLW gas run contraption wasnt big enough for modern day families.
FLW was also an ego maniac.
He was quoted "I am alwasy Frank, and always Wright"
I think thats how it goes.
Now everyone who lives for research ,post what it really is.
See if it really matters.
Oh, well, I think a lot of geniuses are egomaniacs or strange ducks.
Karen
They have a different view on the world and I for 1 am happy they come up with the inventions that they do.
My BIL is an inventer and developed fiber optic cameras and the gas detecting devise on Apollo 13.
Love him.
great pics everyone - willie liked the tour of the falls!
Shelly how it cools down out there - we (I) broke down yesterday and turned on the AC - thought a jump in the river down the street would do the trick - wife wants it off, so i shut it down before she left for work - back on now:)
could not post pics of my closest neighbors yards unless you wanted to see sore thumbs - the new people (husband/wife, daughter/husband/child, and adult nephew) across the street moved into a nice new home and they have 5 vehicles, three pick-ups they park on the street (no one parks on the street here all have large driveways) next to the boat that is for sale - ladders, a trailer and other assorted crap along the fence and half the driveway, takes up a 20x30 ft area of yard, when they open the garage it is absolutely packed with more crap - assorted trampoline and kid toys all over the front lawn - upscale trailer trash family - they mow the lawn once every three weeks or so - and both their dog and cat crap in my yard - can i tell you about my neighbors?
that's great ge - i agree with you - i have found that some of these folks can do this great stuff and then can't tie there shoe laces - had a guy at my last job like that and he knew he was smart and also new he could not do the simple things and laughed about it.
"Too smart to drive" is what I always heard.
Your neighbors sound like Pirls.
Some things we just cant fix.
Hopefully they'll move out soon.
Unfortunately we had to do the moving. I miss my lake!!!
When my mom was growing up in Brooklyn she said they would sleep out on the fire escape when it was really hot.
jen i do not think so - they moved here because of the husbands health and needed a house that had mainly one floor - he is ok now, and the only one that gets out and does anything - as the years go by when he can't it will only get worse - at least i have trees out there that mostly block the view - and hemlocks that are small now that will take care of it later - i trim those things three times a year to keep them growing fat and full.
Willie - you would be the perfect tour guide for the Falls trip for sure!!! I'll bet you'd also know some good places to eat in the area as well!! Count on it!! LOL
And Bill would be the perfect guide for his neighbor's yard---LOL!
it would be a torch tour :)
Jo Anne.... Nice collages of blooms and stones today.
Karen.... Yep, you're right! We're definitely going to be talking about this for a long time. I actually remember the day that the all time high for Eugene (108 deg.) was set, even though I was only 5 yr. old! Reality is that I probably only remember it because of the nasty, blistering sunburn that I got from it. But still, I do remember it. It does seem very strange when I'm looking at the weather maps and see our temps. very close to the hottest states. I much prefer to just visit places with those temps.!! They said that the humidity was 50-60% yesterday, which is incredibly high for us when it's hot. Although, I didn't notice, It just seemed blazin hot and my mouth and eyes dried out instantly. Normally when it's 90 + here, the humidity is around 25%. Even today is much more like home. The high is supposed to be around 100 and humidity at 30%, and it feels much, much, more normal today than it did yesterday. ANyhow, I'm definitely lucky in that I do have AC.
Katye from Sammamish Wa., who posts on the NE threads occasionally, doesn't have any AC and has many miserable animals, so if you see here on any of the NE threads you might wish her your condolensces as well!! I think that she may be heading off to a hotel with all of her pets tonight.
If you're curious about the stats on yesterday's weather, here's a link to what they were for Eugene. It looks as if the humidity was what it felt like during the day (low) and higher at night. http://www.weather.com/weather/pastweather/hourly/97401?stn=0&when=072909
You are also right about the "strange ducks!"
Willie... thanks for the history info!! I love it. Strangely enough, it seems fitting that it was a FLW building that was the first to have a form of A/C.
Bill.... If I were you, I'd hang out in the house with the A/C and your wife can lounge in the river if she doesn't like the comforts of the house! Ok, that's probably not the right attitude, but it is nice to get good sleep in a comfortable house. Good luck with those neighbors. Maybe they haven't noticed yet that they're the messy ones on the block and when they figure it out they'll start to rearrange things?? it's a thought anyhow. Spray cayenne on the areas of your yard where the animals hang out and see if they come back!!
Thanks Robin! Yes, even I can't breath as well, and I'm used to smokey air. But, I do have to at least try to keep the garden as cool as possible, so out I go! I can't imagine others who have chronic lung problems. There's all sorts of stagnant air advisories and of course several forest fires are adding lots of smoke. However, the sunset last night was amazing! Lovely Fence you have there!

Count on Willie to give a beautiful guided tour and a nice history lesson too. I would like to go back to NF without kids in tow. A beautiful place.
JoAnn I love the stone walks and pots intermingled in the garden. Makes a very pleasing scene.
Hmmm, monkshood. Yours is very pretty but it reminds me I have not seen mine yet. Might have to go out and have a search.
I feel bad for all of you out on the west coast suffering with the awful high temps. Hope it goes away soon. Our temp is only 83 and the humidity has dropped down to 60% since a storm rolled by.
Finally got a decent shot of a hummer.
