Those crape myrtle are gorgeous this time of year! Oh I saw some Texas Star hibiscus at a nature walk the other day at Ruffner Mountain. They were so huge and lovely as bog plants among cat-tails.

DNP I love that idea of a curcular bed with circular stones! Nice design!

Thanks. We've been wanting to put something around the flagpole for years but it was difficult because it is on a slope and hard, miserable clay, so had to avoid the "clay pot" effect and also didn't want something that had to be kept moist because it has to be watered with a hose. Our first experiment with the red grass and didn't know how well it could take a rather harsh environment. Been very pleasantly surprised.

Does anyone know if the red grass is truly winter hardy here? Supposedly okay to 10 degrees.

I was told those grasses are biennial, although, they maybe hardy they withered after they made flowers. That's heresay, I don't know for sure.

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

I have some of the grass and it turns brown in the winter but looks nice. I always cut it back in the spring and it takes off again. Some of the stems will get little "projections" when they get big which can easily be cut off and planted to start new plants.

I love the old southern crepe myrtle

Lotus blooming now, that's a bonus. Besides our hardy mainstay of perienials, there are tropicals that bloom all summer long such as this tropical hibiscus.

Beautiful hibiscus, unfortunately the tropicals don't fare well in 7A

Pictured is my old standard hardy bog hibiscus, probably has another name........dies to the ground in winter, comes back every spring with multiplications which move well

Another mystery.....strange clear liquid falling slowly from the sky most of the day. What could this be in Texas?

Looks like the vine may be Autumn Clematis. I have been waiting for mine to bloom for two years, I am so jealous!!

I think your last picture is Clematis virginiana;
http://wildflower.org/plants/result.php?id_plant=CLVI5
the last one could be one of the Verbenas, possibly Verbena halei

Josephine.

Gainesville, TX

I was thinking maybe hoary vervain for the blue/purple wildflower

Quite possibly an autumn clematis....I think I traded with a Daves member some years back and had forgotten about it. I don't know where I planted It and it may have taken years to spread......whacca know? I" have to cut it back and move it this fall, it is covering and taking over the crepe it's growing up.

sharondippity,
I think your July 27 posting at 2:40 pm might be Lythrum alatum.

City_Sylvia, I hope I can offer you the plants you want. But I warn you, I am not very good at propagation . Pressure!
sharondippity, Lovely hibiscus and ironweed. I think Sweet Autumn clematis has a nice scent. Have you gotten close enough for a sniff?

Gainesville, TX

could not catch a fragrance, but got a pic of the bloom as close as I could

The Autumn Clematis seems to only have four petals in the PF pics, so it is more than likely the one Josephine posted. The only leaves I see don't really look the same though. Got a close up of the leaves?

Gainesville, TX

the bloom looks just like clematis virginiana but virginiana has larger, coarser leaves than the one I have growing.........largest leaf is 2.5 smooth teardrop shaped from tip

I am close to certain that it is the autumn clematis, but I can't find a scent

Stephanie so pretty.

Thanks, Coco! They're really great! They produce seed pods if you'd like some of the seeds.

If I knew where I could buy fall tomato plants this would be a great week to plant!
Those monsters out back are toast. When we built the supports we are able to add shade cloth to top. So when it heats back up they have a fighting chance.
Just love all the blooms~~~~~

Gainesville, TX

walmart here in gainesville has nice size plants..already got their little yellow flowers

Gainesville, TX

do you have pictures of the supports and shade cloth in your tomato patch

Gainesville, TX

Stephanie......tell all u know about the mexican hydrangea,,,never saw one before....,,I am thinking I must have one..sun or shade.......temperature tolerance......moist or dry....ground or pot? ...will it grow from a cutting?..a seedling.. acidic or alkaline

Gainesville, TX

A beautiful contrast in the garden

a wild form of coleus, Perilla, self sows from seed. from early summer all season color

Once you have it , it repeats next year

Sharon, Mexican Hydrangeas can be VERY invasive, so keep it in a pot, on a concrete surface and never let the bottom of the pot actually touch dirt or you'll have a forest soon! LOL Of course, if you want a forest, then this is the plant for you! They like part sun. The bloom smells, and some people like it and some don't. I grew mine from a cutting. Don't know if they seed or not; I'm sure they do, just don't know if they're viable or not.

Sharon, that wild purple stuff has a name? Its everywhere, I thought it was a weed. oh well I thought the Mexican Petunia was too.:)

North, TX

since that is a wild coleus, I wonder if it is an edible variety? I don't know much about edible coleus, but I recall an article I recently read about it and thought I would like to grow some:

http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/2340/

I know I'm not normal!!!! I find all the edibles and medicinal herbs and plants very interesting... don't know if anyone else here does?

I would like to find out myself! That would make Wild Coleus a desirable plant for my garden. The edible varieties are Solenostemon rotundifolius and Coleus forskohlii.

It probably isn't but I'm curious.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Perilla is edible and medicinal;
