What's Blooming Mid-July at Your Place?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I found this pretty volunteer Rock Rose blooming. I'm going to transplant this to a better location in the fall.

Maybe it was the rain that spurred on some new blooms.

First bloom of Desert Willow that I planted about a year ago

Yes! I moved it to a little more sheltered from the sun location. So far it is well behaved.
I bought one at Marshall Grains at a reasonable price. Great store!

Oh wow, I love the rajun cajun ruella, most of all I wanted that Desert Willow. lol. I saw them out West during vacation, didn't think that they do well here at home in the East.

You ALL sure have some pretty flowers in bloom!!

Bananna, Is that Desert Willow the Chilopsis linearis? I'm wondering because I just received seeds for it called Orchid of the Desert. Wondering if I can put them in the ground now..... don't want to wait till spring!! LOL

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

It is Chilopsis linearis.I am not sure about growing it from seed b/c I bought it as a little tree from a Native plant sale (thanks Josephine). I believe people get lots of seedlings from these trees, so possibly yours would be ok. I don't have much luck with seeds, and usually have to try sprouting in pots so I don't forget to water.
Maybe some others will have some better advice.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

The Desert Willows that I have propagated have been from cuttings, you could try some of the seed in a pot now, and the rest in Spring.
Josephine.

Thank you for the info. I will do that Josephine ~ thanks!

Lily, I saw that the Desert Willow is also Native to Georgia, your eastern neighbor....that was on the usda.gov site. (can't remember exact name of website) so maybe it will grow for you afterall.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

You could also try winter sowing some in a milk jug and seeing if one (or more) will germinate that way. I bet you'd get some saplings!

North, TX

Oh that is such a great idea, Stephanietx!! I was just talking about winter sowing in milk (or water) jugs on another forum!!

Of course I'm still gonna put some in a pot right now and see what happens :o)

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

Let us know how it does.
Lily, if you plant Desert Willow make sure it is in a well drained sunny area.... not call Desert W just for fancy. I think you get a lot more rain than we do.

I saw this in another garden in the neighbourhood last year. The resident gardener had left the tag in the ground so I knew what to look for. And was lucky to find it this spring. It has been blooming since then.

The other day after the rain I went out to shoot some pics. Our garden is a mix of Perennials, Roses and my passion Tropicals.

The first couple of blooms were more yellow, but this is the color I was expecting. Has some blackspot, though.

My baby Turk's Cap put on a bloom the other day! I'm so excited! I got this as a cutting from my dad's neighbor's yard in San Antonio a couple of years ago. I rooted it and it grew in a 1-gal container for a year or so. Then I transplanted it last month when we finished the new flower bed in our backyard.

Very nice Stephanie, I love Turk's cap, did you know they can live as long as 50 years?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I didn't know that about their life span. That's amazing! If that's the case, maybe mine will be here very long after I'm here!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Interesting fact about the Turk's cap Josephine. Have you seen some of the seedpods they produce? Interesting looking little things. I love them too.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Not sure what this is.....in the petunia family I suppose but don't have it anywhere else. Anyone know?

Very neat Sheila, that Purslane is adorable.
The Petunia looking flower is Wild Petunia, Ruellia nudiflora, a very worthy plant tough and drought resistant, we grow them at the greenhouse, and you should see the roots in a quart pot they can be as long as 5 feet, they are amazing and very pretty too.
They are also a larval host for the Buckeye butterfly.
Josephine.

Josephine, thanks for the rooting instructions. I think I still have some of this stuff from the first time .... that was five or six years ago?lol
You guys have some beautiful plants! I am going to put some of these on my wish list for the next RU. Especially you Banana ;)

Sheila where you get the beautiful Purselanes? I use to buy them every year, haven't seen any lately. Did you know you can eat them?

Thumbnail by City_Sylvia
Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks Josephine, I was hoping that was what it was. It is in that back section at the end of my yard, so I will have to gather seeds to make sure I have others next year because of the water we sometimes get down there.

Sylvia, thanks; not sure where we got them, but want to say a group that set up ON the parking lot of Ridgmar Mall this year. They closed up now, but they had super prices. Hope they return in the spring. As for eating them...no thanks...plus DH would frown on it, that is one of his deck plants! LOL!

The moss rose and red grass around our flagpole have been very happy with hot and dry conditions. First year for the red grass and have been very surprised at how it has grown.
