I love my esperanza! It's such a cheerful plant!

Rudbeckia "Herbstonne" is really starting to put on a show.

My little John Fannick Phlox that I got from Anna (I think) has finally put on enough blooms to snap a pic. It's only about 10" tall!

Beautiful! But I may have lost my JF phlox. It's leaves are toast, just bleached and hanging down. A victim of extreme heat, a very long drought and too much intense sun, maybe. I save what I can these days. Still not a drop of rain. Some days I imagine one of those desert scenes with the bleached white cow skull...except next to it is the withered remains of my dead plants!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Linda, I'm so sorry about the drought. Praying for rain coming your way.

North, TX

That Esperanza sure is pretty. Joining Lily with a prayer for rain coming your way, Linda.

I know it probably isn't a big deal to most, but I'm pretty excited about the opening of my sunflower!! And one more to go!! Ha!

I love sunflowers! I've seen a long strip/bed of them recently. The area last year was dedicated to zinias, this year it is reserved for sunflowers! I wished I could grow those flowers like that.

Here is some cutleaf yellow conflowers. These are as tall as the sunflowers I think.

Well, I tried growing a nice row of sunflowers but the dogs trampled on the seedlings...so I was left with one and a half sunflowers. The half grew in spite of being broken LOL and that pic above is the end result. It's much shorter than the other one.

This one is about to bloom, it's between 4&5 feet tall.

Hmm. I've never seen the cutleaf coneflowers. Are they natives there?

This morning, I found this little daylily, "Golden Girl", blooming outside my back door.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

I'm not sure where the cutleaf coneflower originated. PF listed them as hardy from zones 3a-9.
I started out with a one gallon clump 3 years ago. Now I've 6 clumps in various locations. They seems to require more water than most drought tolerance rudbeckias.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Go Stephanie! Daylily in July. Oh yes. I've a red one that yielded its last blooms for me couple of days ago. I was delighted to have found it this late in the season.

Here is the pf on the coneflower:

I have 2 of those coneflowers and you're right, they do seem to require more water. They droop in the mid-day sun, but do perk back up in the evening.

I have another daylily, "San Antonio Firecracker" that is an extended bloomer and I thought it was finished, but it sent up 4 more scapes a couple of weeks ago, and it's been blooming ever since. It's the one at the top of the thread. I think it's been blooming since early-mid June! You can see the scapes in this pic.

Rudbeckia...

These are about five feet tall. I think they are Rudbeckia hirta. Anyone?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Beautiful sunflower and Rudbeckias Carlo!! Those rudbeckias look like Rudbeckia hirtas to me, but I'm no expert, so don't take my word for it.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Sunflowers and rudbeckias, they're such wonderful flowers for the heat wave of summer. However, we've a sudden cool waves! 60'ish during the night, and 80'ish days. I've some smaller rudbeckias that's very eye-catching. 2nd year in the garden, requires little care.

Awoke this morning to a strange sound....pitter patter....not a sound I've heard in a while.
What was this strange sound she asks????
Combing through her memory banks searching for a faint clue as to what be this strange but comforting sound!!!
A faint memory surfaces....Rain, she smiles in delight~~~~

Going out today to fertilize everything. Were on tap for more rain tomorrow. Hopefully August blooms.
Carloln your sunflowers are just gorgeous!!!!

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

All the sunflowers are just beautiful, as well as all other blooms.

Here is one of ours............

coco, you must be an author of some must read books. I almost got lost on your journey of the refreshing rain. lol.

There is everything beautiful for each season. That's a quote I've noticed but can't remember the author. :-)

Accompanying a pretty bloom are the fruits of Maypops. Bees are helping to pollinate these flowers now, awaiting for the Gulf Frits migration.

Lily---what is a Maypop?

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Morganc, sorry for having using common name on plant -- that's proven to be confusing since different region may have different names for a same plant. I meant to say passionflora incarnata. Here is it:
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1189/

This is native here in my regions and other Southern regions. It's a hostplant for Gulf frits. butterflies and others. From the above pix, I had the vine trained up my brugmansia.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Well, the flowers are stunning...........is the fruit good?

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

I've people that really enjoy the fruits, especially if they grew up with them. I don't usually eat them fruits. Birds and squirrels in the garden love them however. I love their look. lol.

North, TX

All sunflowers are beautiful! Carlo, those are very pretty.

Those Maypops grow like crazy around my place! Someone (my dh) keeps mowing them down and they just grow right back. They're also draping over the blackberry bushes. I've never tasted the fruit because the deer love them and seem to know when just when they are ripe! It is said to make a tasty jelly. The flowers and leaves can be dried and made into a medicinal tea.

morganc, I can send you cuttings if you want to grow some.

Dallas, TX

Sheila, I do see that MH coming up everywhere. Its over there next to that fence where I park my car. Over there where hardly any thing grows ... due to those massive roots. I think I am going to dig up every thing in that area and have one of those Stump removal guys come out and chew up those roots. I lost three or four hostas in there. :( Greg is coming over Friday, I will have him dig the MH then.

Hey you guys with the Esperanza, start some cutting for the October roundup:)
For two years I have been trying to root my Mexican Flame vine, it just dont work for me. Anybody got any ideas as to how I can get this done?

Dallas, TX

You guys have some beautiful drought tolerant plants! I need name so I can buy seeds or whatever. I am trying to do a drought tolerant be out front. I planted hundreds of Zinnia seeds out front, the garden man trampled all over the seedlings, I just wanted to cry!

North, TX

Tah-dah! She finally made her showing today!

The zinnias sure are pretty, someone's got a pretty close up of one with a bee up there somewhere!! Oh, morganc ~ that is a beautiful shot. That is a shame about your zinnias, City_Sylvia!! Garden man needs to watch where he's going!!

allwild818----I would love a cutting! How sweet you are. I will D-mail you.

Allwild18 ... I told him to never cut my hedges again!

Got a little dwarf canna in bloom today. That purple chair behind it doesn't do a thing for it though. LOL!

These zinnias were not my intended subject, but they are the best ones in bloom right now. Most of my zinnias were attacked early on by the snails and pill bugs.
What I was trying to shoot was the skipper butterfly that is suspended above the Gulf Frit.

Thumbnail by Sheila_FW
Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Kerria reblooms, not as abundant as it was in early spring. Sheila, your zinias looks soo beautiful. It's so humid here they don't do well for me. What kind of skipper is that 'lil one? Bazillian skipper? I've missed my G. frit. They're not here yet.

I finally got some pics!
The Obedient plants are starting to bloom. I think some of that is Golden Rod. Also I miss my Texas star, my neighbor told me it bloomed ... I was so excited I thought it was a goner.

... some of my Zinnias that left.

Sylvia, your obedient plants are tall! Mine are shrimps compared to yours. LOL It must be because this is the first year for them.

Stephanie ... never have I ever seen them this tall either. Maybe its the sun ... I had some in semi shade and they half the size of these.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Agreed, my obedient plant is half as tall, and the vivid lavender coloring is fading 'cause it's in the shade.

I love these Turk's caps bright scarlet red blooms this time of year.

Thumbnail by Lily_love
Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

My obedient plant is planted in full hot sun and it's just not that tall. I really think it's because it's the first year in my garden.

Here it is next to the Cutleaf Rudbeckia
