The Long View 2009 #3

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Wha, that makes sense as I see that other one. With you green thumb those J. Maples will be big very soon. I see the little geraniums, they will be fill in nicely, I hope by next spring! I will pot up a big oakleaf for you at some point and drop it off in the fall. Patti

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wow - looks great, Bill! I agree about the hydrangea - but only because of the flowers, not the foliage.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

patti do not go out of your way, you have already been very generous - i have other oakleafs that i can propagate here - thx for offering.

i guess i can move the hydrangea more in between the two jm's as there some space there and still keep the entrance look. next spring though not now:)

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

iris that little blue spruce is semi-dwarf will only grow to 12' if i let it. i have one a similiar size in front that will go to 30'.

South Hamilton, MA

I guess that our 'home' one must have been a 30 footer.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Gorgeous landscaping as usual Bill. Love the birdhouses and it looks like a lot more sun is getting through there without the trees that came down. I see your birdfeeder is looking good too. Great pics and a beautiful job on everything.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

How many yards of mulch, Bill??

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

"only" 20 this year - it will be less next year as there will not be any big new beds which required a thicker layer - i'm hoping to reduce it to 18 :)

no actually probably 15 year.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Still a lot. I did 20 one year and it took a long time and killed my back.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

it is a lot - i get it moved in just a few full days - fortunately no back problems

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Not yet...

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

thx buddy :)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Hee hee. Hope you don't. It sucks. Even worse when the knees are no good either. Hard to favor one.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

what a great job you did Bill... love it!!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I second that Victor.
I garden much slower but get the job done.
Hips have been replaced (a great job I hardly know they are there)
Knees are going
Feet are arthritic
Hands have carple tunnell from jamming the spade into the clay.
I cant imagine not being able to do this. Lots of Aleve on days when I work longer.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

thank you allison

ge that is quite a list - take care of yourself and keep going!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I have always been great at problem solving.
Might write a book on how to garden in pain with 1 hand.
The illustrations should be priceless.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Looking down one side of the dog's fence......Mostly 'Centerfold' in bloom, some 'White Pixels'. The dark colored buds in the middle are 'Landini' and they are taking their sweet time opening this year!!!!!

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

Wow, I'm so far behind.
Kassia, there will be more Dahlias next spring for you. The new ones look great.
Wha, your yard is impressive.
GE, I like the Monarda with the Liatris. Is that Liatris the tall Fluoristan white?

Andy P:
It always makes me laugh when DGers are so thrilled and compliment me on plant combos.
I think you posted one last year and I copuied yours.
The White liatris is one I had for years at my old house. Moved it here and its gone nuts.
I do love it and with the lilies too.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I'm doing albums now

Beautiful lilies Pixie and GE. A lot of mine got slimed by slugs, yuck, but are blooming and if you just smell and don't look down too far on the stems they are wonderful.

Earlier in June before things got too drenched the foxgloves put on a nice show.

Around the same time the yellow and blue garden bed was starting to look pretty with the perennial foxgloves.

The honeysuckle was a welcoming sight at the front entrance. The peonies got mushified mostly this year with all the rain. I am hoping next year they will be really nice again.

love the foxgloves - what is that blue flower in fron of them in the third picture?

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Thanks Bill. The blue flower I think you mean is a clematis on the arbor, 'Elsa Spath'. The poor thing got slimed too. Couldn't figure out what was munching on them until I found slugs 7' up on the clems. I do not usually have them in my beds, at least not so many to cause damage, but with so many dark wet days in a row they came across wide areas from the woods climbed up plants and just stayed there 24/7 . I have dispatched hundreds already.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Everything looks so beautiful sigh.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

very nice gardens ngam

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

Lovely gardens, Ngam. The slugs are everywhere this year, I go around with a salt shaker. A couple grains of salt and they melt like the Wicked Witch of the West.
I was looking out the back door last evening and noticed the young rain soaked hostas around the birdbath had a nice angle to them.

Beautiful ngam, the clem is striking. Can't help but notice it.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Thanks everyone. The slugs are just awful. I find pounding them into the driveway very fulfilling. They are places I would never have thought to look for them until this year. This am I saw three about ten feet up the trunk of a big oak tree, out of reach but I am hoping that the sun is coming out now and will fry them. :)

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Spray with a solution of 1 to 4 amonia and water.
They disolve before your eyes.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Do slugs have any friends I wonder?
