Garden Objects #3

LOL Doc, I think the glue melted in the heat. I found one of them in the bed, but think the other is living in a bird's nest somewhere.

In all fairness I judged that frog to be a big buck bull frog.

So....... Doc thinks Stormy's frog is a cross dresser. LOL

Stormy, If you have crows you may be right about the eye ball I heard they like shiny things. I still like the bistro set.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Is this the thread with your glider, stormyla? I actually like the yellow and white that's on it!

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Lady, it wouldn't surprise me at all if my frog turned out in drag!!! Yes, there are crows here.

Sally, I kind of like the yellow too, but if I went with yellow, I think I'd choose a deeper yellow. I'm not one much for pastels. They don't suit my personality. LOL

Stormy, I NEED a ballerina to dance with my frog band - I love her!!!! Looks like "she?" might have been made by the same company my band members came from - a few of them have lost their vision as well :) I keep picking up the stones, put them in my pocket and take them inside until I'm ready to try to glue them back on but then I forget where I left them! Probably should have just left them at the base of the frog so I'd KNOW where they are! LOL I'm going to make it my mission to find more frogs over the winter and maybe I'll be lucky enough to find my own ballerina. Your Begonias really filled out nicely in that pot I liked so much and looks so inviting on the table :)

Roses, sorry we missed your birthday - Happy Belated Birthday! It looks like you had a wonderful party and what great gifts :)

Do you all remember us kidding Hart that her old ladder propped up against a tree was a garden object?. I remember telling her she should plant vines around it. Well, some other DGers put some old ladders to good use.

Jen, You should have posted this article here when everyone was discussing plumbing items as garden objects!!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

that's great!

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Do you mean the ladders or the plumbing????

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

cross posted... the ladders!

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

LOL, I didn't even like the plants that were in the potty.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I could pass on those myself

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Stormy, I actually have the pot that your begonias are in!! Bought it at Home Goods a few years ago. Right now one of the pots separated from the group and needs to be glued back. I complained when I needed to water the small slanted openings that I couldn't get the job done right. I will copy your beautiful setting with the red begonias, and red table, put some watersorb crystals in the pots and enjoy them this way next year, if you don't mind.

I enjoy all of your creative displays. I just plant. Oh well, I'll see if I can conjure up some creativity next year. (Or I'll just duplicate your displays)

Odenton, MD(Zone 7b)

I really enjoy the forum about the ladders. The whole TtoT forum has so many cool ideas on it, some folks are quite creative.

Wow, Take a look at this home made stepping stone border. Aren't they neat?

Might make a good winter project for a small area. I like the idea of pressing fern leafs into them for the pattern.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I have a collection of plastic cake lids and deli lids, some of them have nice molded designs. "Some day" I thought I would make stepping stones with them. Some have plain centers where you could lay leaves before pouring the cement. But they are flimsy and can get distorted if not supported when filled with cement.
Good excuse to eat cake anyway...

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

LOL, Sally you're always good for a fun chuckle, or was that a snort?

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Rose, I'm sorry to hear that your lovely pot broke. Have you been able to repair it? I was sure to put some of the Watersorb crystals in mine because I noticed the dryness in that pot last year. The Begonias grew great this year with infrequent supplemental waterings.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

YEAH! if you are as skinny as Sally--you can have your cake AND icing too! It would take a lot of fattening food to make HER gain a pound!

I am just jealous!!!! ...as I sit here and am having my few spoon-fulls of Ben &Jerrie's ice cream.....My snack before bed.

Honest--just a few tsps.-full. that is all I need......Less acid in the stomach as I sleep all night.....

Here's another project that I didn't get around to this summer. I used to have a nice floating water lily fountain in a large dish planter on the tree stump in the center of my back yard.

It was solar operated and recycled the existing water so did not require any plumbing or electric. It was easy to take down & store for the winter. Because it did not have a filter on the floating lily pad, it would get clogged and I had to constantly clean it.

I was looking for another type of fountain to use in the dish, when DSO dropped it while bringing it up out of the basement. It broke in 2 and was not usable.

When Teri posted the photo of her charming Bird's nest fountain, I realized how much I missed my fountain & decided to look for another. This summer I found an incredible buy ($30) on a small concrete fountain. I was able to locate a solar powered pump and filter for it on Ebay ($20). I have been thinking about where it should be placed as it needs sunlight to work. It's been sitting outside most of the summer and now I will pack it away until next year. I don't think that it is the right shape to sit on my tree stump, but maybe it would be depending on what I might plant around the stump.

Here's the photo: It's about 24" tall and 16" around. It comes apart in 2 sections to refill it and have access to the pump.

Here's how it comes apart. I really want to get this set up early next year so I can start a little garden around it.

I'm seriously thinking of having DSO make me two of those Ladder plant racks. I have one old ladder and will be looking for another. Lady & Gita have gotten me interested in Begonias and I started a collection that's been living on my deck table all summer.
I can prop 2 of those brightly painted ladders up against that Ugly white fence and move the collection over there. The light over there is perfect for the begonias and the tree leaf cover will keep them from getting too much water. I lost two of them and another 1 is distressed because of all of the rain. I didn't remember to empty excess water out of the pots every time it rained this summer and they drowned.

Yep! I am an enabler. Addiction likes company ya know. I now have a collection of 7 different begonias, 2 are from Gita, 1 from Buttoneer, my first was a rescue from Lowes about 4 years ago, and 3 from a local garden store.
That fountain will be wonderful next year, love to have the sound of running water in the garden (except for the hose that you forget to turn off).

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

well I see someone else I need to make begonia cuttings for next year

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Lady and onewish--

I still have another one to share--even if I just send you a leaf--it will root. Or I can root it for you before the first Plant Swap....It is the Beefsteak Begonia....

Here! NOT the best of my shots--but I cannot go searching through every Folder to find THE shot!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

yes please!!... the rex leaf cutting from the swap started rooting... and I think I re potted it too soon.. it's not looking good now

:(

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Bear with me---I will put you onemy "watch" list and send you a couple leaves....
I usually root them in water---just like AV's....Then pot them up in 4"-5" pots in fluffy potting mix. BUT--They may also root just as easily in a potting mix.

It takes a while---but soon you will see new little leaflets coming up. Once they do this--you are on your way!

I have had this plant also for many years. Right now--it is still outside--and LUSH beyond description.
When I bring it inside--it will, slowly, yellow out most of the large, lush leaves and I will have to pull them off.
I think it just needs good light (NOT direct sun!) and a lot of humidity. The outside sure provides this.....BUT--even inside--it will son acclimatize and grow well.

I KNOW I have better pictures!!!! Just don't feel like sifting through all my Picture Folders to find them....

Hang in there! One day you will get a package and be surprised!

I have always wanted to ask you----WHAT is your "one wish"?????

Gita

Here--this is a bit better.....It is called (probably) "Beefsteak" because the bottoms of the leaves are EXACTLY the color of raw meat.....

I'll try to get over it!! ^_^

stormyla--

WOW!!! I have so much to comment on after reading the Post you gave above!

I almost feel "guilty" if I caused any of your "addiction"! How did I miss this Post????? You are SOOO Funny!
You should have been a writer---You have "the gift".....

OK! Briefly--and succinct--I hope--a few comments.....

1--Stormy--I LOVED all your Begonias in the pictures--and your commentary! Not all of them are easy to keep over the winter--as Begonias thrive on high humidity. The more "exotic" ones like to almost be in a terrarium....
The cane ones and the beefsteak ones survive no matter what.

2--The REXES----OH! How beautiful they are! I have tried a couple of them in years past--and none of them made it.
I was, probably, not overly informed on their care. COOL and HUMID is hard to achieve in the home!

3--The Maidenhorn Ferns grow best in a terrarium environment. That's all I can say!

4--Re the Perennial "Begonia Grandis" --They were nowhere to be seen in my beds this Spring. I gave up on them!
Dug up the soil in the area---planted other things---and then--There they were! Growing and blooming all Summer.
Also--appeAring in beds where I had not planted them.....Now my head is thinking they will take over my yard!
Yoo-Hooo----Are these invasive by any means?

Stormy--Would you like me to send you a couple of leaves of the "Beefsteak" as a replacement for the ones you lost?
D-mail me!!!!!

OK! Gotta run--There must be something on TV tonight!

PS---Did any of you have problems connecting to DG in the last two days???? I sure did!
It had something to do with the "cookies" not having been enabled. It was NOT my problem! I just bide my time
and trusted that dave would fix it. Onbviously--he did--or i would not be writing this to you......
