I placed an order on 2-17 and asked for a March 1 shipping. Apparently, they did ship my order but the order was returned to them as they used UPS and UPS will not ship to a PO Box address. Most sights automatically reject an order if they cannot ship to a PO Box or they ship by a carrier that will. I gave a PO address when I ordered on line and it was accepted. Why would they even use a carrier they knew could not deliver? I was never notified that my order had been returned. When I called, they said that it was shipped and recieved by me. After I insisted it was not, they did some checking and that is when they told me it was returned. They said they would reship but it is already well into our growing season here in South Central OKlahoma and I told them I did not want it now. They should have notified me. Their reply was they have to many returns to notify people. They would only reship or I would loose my money. The person I talked to was rude and hateful. They would rather have dissatisfied customers than send a note or email that an order was returned to them. I will never order through them again. I was a repeat customer from last year when we lived in New Mexico but after such a negative interaction with them, I will never use them again. I felt strongly enough about the poor way I was treated by them that I am compelled to send in this negative experience.

My first order was online (Montmorency Cherry Trees-Sour $8.5), and they told me I qualify for a free Colorado Blue Spruce tree. Few days later I called them and ask if they sent the order and when they said no, I added a Golden Jubilee Peach Tree $8.5, a Damson Plum Tree $8.5 and 2 Blackberry $9.0. The total was $38.45 (including shipping)., which I thought at the time was not a bad price. Well, almost two weeks later after they told me sent the package, I finally received it.
There were dry twigs inside. Three dry sticks that supposedly were trees with a dry newspaper wrapped around some very dry roots, and hand written paper labels wrapped around them. Another two-dried twigs (smaller) they were supposed to be blackberries plants. (no root whatsoever on those last ones). The “free” Colorado Blue Spruce tree was a piece of limb from a pine tree (dried of course) about two inches long. I called them at their phone number (931-474-3386) and I spoke with some very angry people. They were the ones that were angry. I don’t understand why were they angry. They promised something that they couldn’t deliver.
Few times in a row they hung up on me and they didn’t want to transfer me to their supervisor. They kept telling me would send replacements. More dry twigs? I don’t think so… Anyway, I sent them back their order today. I hope I’ll get my money back. The last person I spoke was the manager (I hope so) a person named Sam Walker. He said to sent straight to him and he’ll send me refund.
Never order from them again and I advise everybody who reads this not to order from them either.

I placed an order with Autumn Ridge Nursery in January. I requested to have my items shipped in the first week of March, which they appeared to have honored. I am very leary as I came across this web-site so I called them to cancel my order. The CSR was polite and informed me that they post refunds once a month and my money would be refunded at that time. Given that their prices are so low and depending on the accuracy of the CSR's statements, I plan on ordering from them in the fall. But, if anyone can let me know if this is a typical procedure for refunds, I would appreciate it.

It appears that many problems reported deal with bareroot plants and trees. I am interested in the 1-2 foot bushes. If anyone has ordered bushes from them, i.e. hydrangeas or burning bushes, I would appreciate your input.

I will update my posting toward the end of this month.

Like other posters, I have received undersized, poorly-packaged plants from Autumn Ridge Nurseries. My Emails to them have not been answered. However, I was successful in receiving replacement plants for some of the ones that didn't live by calling their number 931-474-3386. They also respond to their fax number 931-474-3387. Folks, in the real world, you get what you pay for. If the website advertises "Best Prices..." and "Why are our prices so low?" as Autumn Ridges does, you should not expect large plants and expensive shipping containers. The employees I dealt with were very nice and they did ship out acceptable plants to replace some of the ones that did not live. I rated my experience with them "negative" because I believe even discount nurseries should ship live plants and not dead sticks, like what I first received from them. If you have issues with this company, try the two phone numbers above.

In the spring of 2005, I ordered a jackmanii clematis and three daylilies from this complany. I also recieved a free peegee hydrangea with my order. The order arrived in a flimsy cardboard tube with moldy newpaper. The peegee hydrangea looked like two dead sticks, but I planted it anyways. It didn't make it. The clematis began growing and I soon realized that it wasn't a clematis at all but some sort of (I think) hardy geranium. I called and asked for a replacement, which they did ship out, but it arrived dead. The daylilies were supposed to be elegant candy, ice carnival, and daring deception (or maybe daring dilemma?) and although they grew into healthy plants, when they bloomed they were absolutely not what they were labelled as. Since I am a daylily collector, this was very dissapointing. I called, e-mailed, sent letters, and finally was told to mail a letter stating the problem and that a form would be mailed to me which I would need to fill out to get the problem resolved. It never came. So I called again, and finally got someone who told me they would be shipped out this fall. When they never came, I e-mailed and threatened them with an attorney. They claim that the items will be shipped in the spring. I don't expect to see them ever, but after reading some of the feedback on this forum I am just happy that any of the plants were even alive!

The first time I ordered I was pretty sure the plants seemed to be in good condition, except for the ones that were smaller than the twigs in my yard. I dutifully went out and about and planted them ASAP, watered and tended to them. They were supposed to be dormant as it was a spring order. Welll we had a severe frost and I didn't think anything about it when none of them but 2 of about 20 survived. I didn't think it was the company's responsibility that there had been such a bad freeze. Maybe I was wrong, but that was how I felt.

SOOOOOOOOO, I gave them another chance. What I received the second time were not the 3 and 4 foot saplings I had received the first time. They were twigs if even that, and not a single one did anything other than rot. I had told a couple people about the first trees I had gotten and that theywere pretty nice looking except the trees had died in the frost. I have rebutted all those statements to those I spoke to and told them whatever they do not to order from there as it is a LARGE waste of money and effort if they do.

I feel resentment towards a company that seems to be just another large ring of theivery that this country is starting to portray to too many! Theives belong in a court room and jail. They do not belong sitting behind a desk, printing nursey catalogs, promising great trees, only to steal everyone blind!

Thanks for letting me get this off my chest!

Three blueberry plants were merely sticks with a few hair roots. I planted and nurtured them, but none survived. Subsequently sent 3 e-mails and was told replacements would be shipped after frost. Definitely a negative experience. While I understand what "bareroot" and "dormant" mean, that doesn't excuse mailing delicate bareroot twigs in a flimsy cardboard tube wrapped in some moldy newspaper. They will of course dry out. Upon unwrapping my twigs, dust-dry roots and leaves crackled off at my lightest touch. I gently scratched beneath the bark to see if there were any signs of life - dry and dead, no green.

I called Autumn Ridge and they were very defensive and belligerent-sounding. They told me to plant my twigs anyway and water them with a little Miracle Grow, so I did.

Nothing grew, not my blueberries, blackberries, gingko tree... the only thing that did was my peach tree, but it grew from beneath the graft. God only knows what kind of peach tree is under there. I wrote the company but received no response.

So I called the company, and described the situation. They said they would not refund me but they would replace the order.

Great, I get to go through all this again. Maybe I should start a nursery like this. I'll just charge people for my yard trimmings and when they don't grow, I'll just send more until my clients get tired of calling me.

I did call immediately and got the run around on the phone for a bit, then asked for a complete refund. I asked if needed to send the product back, but their reply was no. Trees where bareroot as expected and where planted this past fall. Spring arrived and nothing. No buds, no life, nothing. I have sent them emails, offered to take pictures of the lifeless trees and even return them and have rec'd no response. I would like them to live up to their guarantee of replacement for 1/2 the cost of my original order. No response. I have had a horrible experience with this company. I have learned my lesson about mail order nurseries. Autumn Ridge is the 2nd place to have become a total rip off for me.

I ordered 6 Crape Mertyle shrubs and got some free plant with my order it was supposed to be a hydrangia. Well, I ended up with 6 dead sticks that were not packed in anything except a paper towel tube! The roots were dry and breaking off the twigs I recieved. I planted them and like an idiot I still water them everyday to see if they do anything. I highly doubt this since there were no signs of life in these plants at all. I used my finger nail to look for the green under the bark and found nothing.

The hydrangia that was free, I am glad it was free since it was about 3 inches tall and has no roots. Just the dead branches of another plant. Disgusting!

I cannot understand how they stay in business.

I too was quite surprised to see my order come in a tiny package. However, I have planted them and am daily thrilled as they have sprouted leaves and are quite healthy. The value was great. I planted my present orchard 13 years ago and wanted a much larger orchard for when I retire. Even if only half of the trees survived, I figured I was money ahead of how I purchased 13 years ago. However, in two short weeks, 12 of 20 plants already have leaves. I expect the 8 remaining to leaf out soon and will add to this post IF THEY DO NOT.

Admittedly, their communication seems a bit slow but I will sacrifice that small inconvenience for the wonderful value.

The trees were exactly as described, 2-3feet tall (including the FREE one). And began thriving as soon as planted. Yes they were on the slim side, as any young sappling would be. But as someone who Love gardening the satisfaction is in watching the plant grow and thrive.

If I wanted instant satisfaction I could pay 10-20 times the amount at a Home Improvement store or nursery, I could also get something "Slightly" bigger from other online nurseries at pay 3-5 times as much.

The Rhoendondrm was too smal to use right away as I wanted to use it as a focal point in my main entrance (my other bushes were bigger). But it was MY error in not looking at the size description, it was the exact size they indicated. Still have it and it is growing fine. Once it is bigger I will move it back in front.

As a single parent who just bought a new house, not a smart option. I was able to landscape my entire front and side yard (which needed an Extreme makeover) for less than $100. Can't beat that with a stick.

I ordered from Autumn Ridge and then found this site after I had made an order. Needless to say I was very nervous about what I would receive. Including, White Dogwood, Apple, Red Maple, Peach Trees and also shrubs including Rhododendrons, Crape Myrtles and then some Vinca Minor Ground cover. When I got the bag full of plants, I was sure that that must have only been part of the order. I pulled out a bunch of very skinny trees and some very small bare root shrubs. My first thought was oh no!, just like people had described. But I decided to plant all of them and see how they go. I have now had the plants in the ground for 1 week and all of my Dogwoods are throwing new growth (3), All but one of my Red Maples have new growth. (5 out of 6) and all of my Rhodies (4) have new growth. The ground cover is growing great and my apple and peach trees have new growth beginning as well. My Crape Myrtles do not look good. No new growth yet (0 for 6). But it has only been a week. Anyway for the amount of plants that I got for the money I am very pleased. I was very surprised by the size of the plants when i got them, I thought they would have been bigger. But the heights of the plants were accurately described. My Red Maples for example said they would be 2-4 feet. They are about 30"-36" but very skinny. Any way to wrap this up, I was a little worried when they got here, but I see that a lot of the people have posted complaints before they even give the plants a chance to grow. Give them a chance and see. I have not talked to the company about the crape myrtles but if they do not make it i will and will post an update. But the truth is, I would order again regardless, because I got so many plants for my money, even if some die it would be worth it. They Shipped right away. I ordered them on a sunday night online and they got here on Friday across the country in the Puget Sound, Washington State area.

WHen i asked them about it, they were not that helpful, he acted like it was suppose to be like that when even a beginner like me knows that it is not right. But i planted and asked for advice somewhere else, now it is leaving out and looks ok...as to the original pear tree, after it leaved out, now it looks like it is a peach tree or something, the leaves are completely different than all my pear trees...it is dying too (i think this is more me than they so i dont want to blame them of it).

Larger plants cost a fortune to mail.

But to my better judgment i thought i should wait on planting till fall, so the trees would not have to fight the heat here this summer. I called the number on their contact page and the man was nice and friendly and promptly cancelled this order for me.
I will be ordering from them in the fall.
They are up front and state on there web site just what size you are getting. They seem to have an excellent 1 year replacment policy like most other mail order catalogues i have delt with.
I just over looked this.

First of all I'm reliefed to find out that Autumn Ridge has a negative pattern in dealing with customers ,it makes me hope that somebody will put a stop to that.
I've ordered from them on may 21 2004.
The order arrived ,was incomplete, plants were all smaller then advertised and looked dead.
About the looking dead part I was hoping I was wrong.
Complaining via email availed no result ,no response on the phone either.
Four months later when it became obvious that the plants couldn't be any deader I wrote asking for my 75 dollars back.
this time I've got a response ;"We start shipping in october .Thank you for your order"
Irony or automatic response didn't make me happy.
Not only that I WOULD NOT RECCOMEND THEM ,I'M HAPPY I CAN TELL PEOPLE TO STAY AWAY FROM AUTUMN RIDGE NURSERY.

This past spring I placed my first order with Autumn Ridge Nursery. I received all of my order without any problems.. I was surprised at how small some of the tree's were.. Several of them did not look like they were going to make it... I e-mail Autumn Ridge about the condition of the plants I had ordered. They responded to my e-mail by the next day they offered to replace all the plants that didn't survive during the summer months as it was to late to ship replacements at that time.. Over the summer a few of them that I thought looked bad sprouted leaves and did very well... I contacted them when it was time to send out the fall order to give them an update as to what survived and what did not. Again they responded quickly & I received all of the replacements and they all look great!

However, in Autumn Ridges' defense... This is the first time I have placed an order like this online.. I always bought my plants and tree’s from a local nursery so of course those plants and trees are much larger, fuller & in full bloom and could be quite expensive to purchase & ship if I had purchased them online. So when I receive a tree that I “purchased online” that is described at being 6 to 12 inches when shipped then I’m not going to complain when the tree or plant I ordered arrives at the size that is described. If I’m ordering spring plants online I’m not going to expect to receive a 3 to 5 foot tree to be in full bloom and potted … or sprouting bulbs, or fruit trees ready to harvest… I’m ordering trees and plants in the dormant state and as long as they are healthy, I should not expect anything more…

Thank You Autumn Ridge for all your help with my order.. I am already working on my spring order with Autumn Ridge Nursery.

Happy Autumn Ridge Customer.

AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL

Like many that have posted here, i was seduced by AR's low prices. I paid $75 to get a bunch of plants, black/blue/ras/berry plants, 7 aborviataes, a cherry tree, and a few other perenials.

i was really confused how they could offer free shipping, as i expected that the shipping itself would cost them close to 75 bucks. nonetheless i proceeded with the purchase.
i had purchased plants from other online places, and the plants were always about 1ft in height and maybe 8 inches in width. the plants were always individually wrapped and individually labelled.

when my shipment came i was pleasantly surprised at first because there was this big box with what appeareed to be a single plant inside. i saw the shipping label said 12 bucks and i could not understand how they could have made money on my 75 buck order when the shipping for one plant itself cost 12 bucks.
well to my horroR when i opened the box, i found that all of my 20 or plants were in this box.
they were all dead and tiny. the aborvitae trees were the biggest joke- the "tree" consisted of a single stem cutting that was about 5 inches in height and about an inch in diameter. i had been charged $3 bucks for each of these "trees" that weighed about 1 gram each.
of course had i known that this was what they meant by tree, i would have cut a zillion similar cuttings from my exisiting aborvitae trees and offered to sell it to AR for the bargain proce of $1.
long and short- staaaaaaaaaaaay away from AR.

Its been about a year since I ordered my plants and made my rather nasty comments and on the whole, i think there were deserved but two of my plants have since truly blossomed and are doing spectacularly well- better than any plants ive bought from any other nursery and so i feel i should let people know-

the bing cherry tree which arrived as a 4FT stick did nothing for the first few months but after i tried changing the location to a sunnier spot, it suddenly took off- this spring which is now the second spring that the tree has been planted i have about 20 branches stemming off the main trunk and about 200 blossoms which im hoping will develop into nice juicy cherries- i will try ordering another fruit tree and post accordingly-

a flowering cherry bush i ordered, arrived looking dead- it was certainly tiny- but that too took off after a few months and is now well on its way to becoming a gorgeous flowering shrub-

i think if autumn ride were more up front about the size of the plants they ship, customers would know what to expect and could make an informed decision- its because the website is not upfront about the tiny size of the plants they ship they get so many complaints-
they claim their prices r so low because they dont use middlemen but i suspect, the real reason is because they send such minute plants- clearly that saves them a bundle on shipping- and if that's their strategy- fine- but they need to make customers clear about this- describing a tree as arriving as a 2ft plant does not let the customer know they will be receiving a miniscule tiny stick that is 2 ft from root to tip

they also need to work much harder as making sure that they do not send out dead plants- i received blackberry plants which consisted of dead 6 inch sticks- they sent replacements but those too were dead-

if you guys are reading this and want to send me viable replacement blackberry plant, they will be gratefully received

3 unlabeled dead pieces of wood arrived- for old times sake, i stuck them in the ground - i pulled them out 3 months later as dead as they were when they arrived-

I had the worst ever Internet shopping experience with this company. I should've known better to check for forums such as this before submitting a large order with the Autumn Ridge nursery just for the bargain (or so I thought). When I received my order of bunch of trees, they arrived bunched in a brown bag (no box) with no wetting medium/soil/nothing. I thought the received order was a mistake since I was under the impression to receive a bunch of healthy trees anywhere between 2-4 feet in height. Apparently the dead twigs without branch, no leaves, barely 1 foot tall trunk with 3/16 of an Inch in diameter, with may~be barely additional 1 foot if you were to count skimpy thin hairy roots may be scam advertised as 2-4 feet trees to them, but that's certainly not my idea of 2-4 feet tall trees. Even with these thin twigs, I tried to find live part on the trunks (cutting dry dead brown trunk, or scratching the bark) but even half way down I couldn't find the trees alive. I am pretty sure that none of them will make it, cause none of the visible twigs are alive and the roots are extremely weak as well. Perhaps I should've ordered safer plants such as burbs and dormant plants such as strawberries, etc to have better luck with them, but they need to get out of selling dead tree/twig business. There was absolutely no order information, no invoice, no papers, except their catalog included with the shipment. On top of that, many items of my order are missing from the shipment as well (thank god I had saved the order web page). I tried calling non-stop for about a week during both business and after hours, but the phone just rings (drops after 20 rings) and no one ever picks it up and there's no answering machine. I've submitted online customer form, and two emails to them but I have yet to hear a response nor receipt acknowledgement. So instead, I ended up contacting my credit card company to resolve the issue instead, which I've done for the first time in my life in over 15 years of credit card use. I am going to take a picture of how the twigs were sent, how they look (like a bunch of dead weed branches) and post it everywhere on the Internet as a caution for all Internet buyers. What a terrible experience!

The only thing that I didn't care for is that they only ship two times per year and that is for the good of the plants. I can't say that it was a bad thing though. I would order from them again without any hesitation.

I received Autumn Ridge's catalog earlier this year. Their prices were fantastic and I was excited about using some of their plants in our new landscape and to build up my nursery propagating stock. On March 30, I ordered a combination of 18 trees, shrubs and climbers. When they arrived on April 28, some of the whips (little saplings) looked okay; some did not. There was no packing or shipping list with my order (ag inspector said this is a requirement). My husband and I planted all of them immediately and just hoped for the best.

I noticed large knots on the main central root of a Red Delicious Apple tree and the Granny Smith Apple tree, but not sure what they were, I planted them anyway. After researching the knots on the internet, I learned that the plant could be diseased with crown gall which is caused by an agrobacterium. Because of this, I pulled the whips out of the ground and called our state agricultural commissioner's office who, in turn, sent out an ag inspector to help determine the cause of the knots on the roots. He said it looked like crown gall or nematodes to him. He took them to a lab in Birmingham, Alabama, where samples of each plant's roots have been taken. He will notify the company and me of the results. He will then handle this problem with the company.

After several attempts, I was finally able to convey the message to the owner, through his wife, that it is serious business when you sell diseased plants to the public. I made him aware that our ag commission is involved in helping me to clean up after handling and planting diseased plants in the field. The owner said he had been in the business for over 20 years and he had never heard of or seen crown gall. I told them it was all over the internet and told them how to spell it. They apologized and agreed to send two disease-free trees if I would send the trees back. Because of necessary testing of the trees I will not be able to do that. Now what?

The Japanese Snowball, Pee Gee hydrangea, Rubel blueberry, honeysuckle, and Tulip Tree are all dead--all of which were planted immediately. I don't know about the Concord grape yet; we're going to give it more time since it takes grape vines a little longer to leaf out. We used an auger and worked quickly to get everything in the ground. Our success rate with planting, even in late spring through early summer, has always been excellent with everything we have planted. The other eleven trees from Autumn Ridge have either leafed-out or have new buds. (Two weeks after placing my order, I still had not received an e-mail shipping confirmation. I was finally able to get through, and was told the plants had been taken to the shipping barn, so the plants' bare roots had been apparently been exposed for quite some time before shipping them.)

Finally, the "Pin" oak is NOT a pin oak. I'm not sure what-the-heck it is, but the leaves look like those of the chestnut oak. We have wet, mucky clay soil on the front of our property and needed something that could handle this difficult soil. That's the reason we specifically ORDERED a "Pin" oak.

Now we have to back up and start all over on at least seven trees, shrubs, climbers. Dealing with this company has been a waste of valuable time and money, not to mention, the headaches it has caused me in trying to clean up after their carelessness with shipping diseased plants.

I am following the Middle Tennessee's Better Business Bureau's recommended procedure for handling all of this. Today I am writing a letter to the company to be sent via certified mail. If they have not responded in ten days, their BBB will handle it for me.

I am still ordering a lot of plants to build up my nursery stock, but I will be more selective next time when choosing a nursery from which to order.
