The plants I received were substandard in every respect. The two apple Trees were 10 inches tall - grapes vines had no roots, the red bud trees were 18 inch sticks and the colorado blue spruce was a mere 4 inches tall. They will not refund my money and to receive replacements they want me to send back their plants and trees to them at my cost before they will send me replacements. The cost is $16.85 which, on top of the $119.00 sent to them, is unreasonable. I will never do business with this company again.

I basically received DEAD roots of trees and plants. When I notified them immediately that the roots arrived dead, they gave me the run around for a year. Then they sent me a form that said they stand by their guarantee and I can reorder my plants at half cost + $2.50 shipping and handling. I was already a fool for ordering once, I'm not sending them more money!

SAVE YOUR MONEY AND GO TO HOME DEPOT OR ORCHARD SUPPLY. At least you can buy a plant that is alive!

Autumn Ridge Nursery is a scam! Pure and simple. THey don't have good Customer Service and they don't stand behind their products. This company is fraudulent.

I purchased a number of rhododendrons, hollies, etc. from this company in May. They arrived as most people have noted, in wet paper in a tube. I knew they would be small plants, but I noticed the following issues with the shipment:

1. Their catalog indicates that the size would be 6-12 inches. Only one or two were over 6 inches long(if you measured from the end of the root to the end of the leaf).

2. Most of the plants were dried out or had no leaves and no roots. The others looked like they had significant insect damage or disease.

3. There were many leaves in the packaging, but not on the plants.

I contacted the company by email immediately(with photos), but received no answer. I then called their phone number with my problem. The person on the other end was fairly kurt and said that they were stopping shipping until fall. I asked what could I do, they said call again in July to get a replacement form. I indicated that I didn't want to wait until fall for plants so how about a refund. The guy said that they, uh, didn't give refunds. I asked why and he said, "owner policy." Mind you that it was never stated as an"owner policy" in their catalog or website. So we ended our conversation.

Here's the key to using any of these companies and having a problem: Use a credit card. I immediately called my credit card company to dispute the charge. They took my info and said that there would be a 30-45 day period for Autumn Ridge to tell their side of the story. At the end of that time period I received a full refund.

If you don't like the plants you receive and don't get customer service, dispute the charge. Some credit card companies won't dispute charges for flowers though. It worked for me. Maybe they get it a lot and figure that the few that get away aren't enough to chase after. Maybe that's an "owner's policy" too. Good luck!

HI:
I read about all the horrible experiences at Autumn Ridge Nursery. I purchased many items about two years ago. They do arrive in wet newspapers, and they do look like twigs. However, I did exactly as they told me, and my trees are growing very beautifully, as well as my flowering shrubs. I ordered an American Redbud (fast grower), Flowering Cherry (it is about four feet high now), pink dogwood (very much starting to really grow), and a white dogwood (it has grown high this summer). I ordered two deutzias (they have produced lots of flowers, and I pruned them to keep them small on purpose), 2 forsythias (nice shrubs), persian lilac (didn't grow), red flowering quince (didn't grow), and a white crape myrtle (beautiful flowering bush that is pretty high). I don't know what more I could have asked out of them, I contacted them about the bushes that didn't grow, and they offered replacements at half price. I decided against it, since I have so many trees, bushes, etc in my yard now. I really think they don't deserve to be thought of as a bad nursery when all they state is that you get bare root. Bare root in mail order could only be a stick size plant, and will probably never look like much. I did exactly what they told me to, and I have trees and shrubs that are growing. I think that speaks positive...but the other question I have for those reading this to think about is: What do you expect for a very cheap price for the plant? I think that you get your money's worth out of it...that is my opinion, and I am glad that I bought from them. Thanks!

Here is my comment: Their catalog, and website state that they are bare root, and have little to no leaves...when you read the fine print. This is what bare root is....

H5's comment: "Here's the key to using any of these companies and having a problem: Use a credit card. I immediately called my credit card company to dispute the charge. My comment to that:

If you dispute plants all the time from mail order then the credit card companies will probably change their policy. This is like taking items back just because they do not meet your "approval rating", and not because there is really anything wrong with them. This is like buying items from a store, and being a "return specialist". What this does is produce problems for the average person who is honest, and only returns items as needed. I guess I just don't understand why people who purchase from mail order nurseries do not take time to do proper research, and understand mail order. This is my opinion, thanks! I am also a gardener, and do not have anything to do with any mail order companies. I just get tired of reading all the negative output, when the people who read them do not even understand mail order. I have never had many problems with mail order. I understand that they will be small, no leaves, or if I didn't agree could purchase them at a larger price at the local nurseries.
Thanks!

My brother ordered some trees and I thought he had found a good place to order from. The catalog look good and so did the prices. So I placed a small order. The order came in about a week. When I unpacked the tree, it looked dead. But I planted and watered it, just in case. The rest of the order was backordered. I called them after two weeks and was told that it needed more time. After 4 weeks of water and looking for any growth, it was clear the tree was DOA when it was shipped. I called back, and was told that they would ship a replacement in the Fall for half price and half price shipping. When I asked the Cust. Rep -Russle, why I would want to pay more money for a replacement tree when the first tree was dead. I was told to go back and read the guarantee, that their guarantee didn't say that THE PLANTS WOULD GROW, ONLY THAT THEY WOULD REPLACE DEFECTIVE PLANTS AT HALF PRICE. (I guess he forgot that the first part said that they would "replace bad plants free")
I then told him to refund the backordered items
I then ask him, why I would want to pay more money for a replacement tree when the first one was DOA? And I could always just let the credit card company dispute the charge. He said, “You can do that, we handle a lot of disputes.” (Had I read this review web page, I would never have placed the order. If it looks too good to be true, it probably is.)
So I returned the dead tree and am disputing the charge. All of my brother's trees also failed to sprout and he too is disputing the charge. I wonder if they buy dead trees from other nurseries and then sucker the first time buyers.
It may well be OK to order in the spring, when the harvested plants are fresh. But I'm not going to try it again. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

I've ordered some herb seeds, doesn't even work. Out of all hundreds of seeds in the 3 packs, I've got a few little mints. All the plants came in wrapped with wet newspaper and thin plastic bag.All wrapped up in 1' height and 4" width thin cardboard box like toilet paper roll. Among 3 packet of herb seeds and peony bulb I bought 7 different fruit plants. 3 out of 7 I've received are alive and the one which are alive look the same. Although, they're labeled as different plants. I decided I had enough of the nonsense and I want a refund although I'm positive the 4 alive plants aren't the plants I've ordered. I just want refunds for the rest of dead plants for $24.95. They refused to refund and on top of that they have the worst attitude.

THEY ONLY MAKE MONEY FROM FIRST TIME BUYER LIKE US. BASICALLY, ANYONE CAN START A WEBSITE LIKE THIS SENDING TWIGS. IF I WALKED FEW STEPS OUT OF MY YARD I CAN SHIP SOME TWIGS FOR $$$$$ AND GUARANTEE REPLACEMENT FOR MORE TWIGS.

THIS BUSINESS SHOULD BE CLOSED DOWN.

HONESTLY, PAY A FEW BUCKS MORE AT YOUR LOCAL NURSERY OR IF YOU LIKE TO SHOP ONLINE GET IT FROM ONLINE STORE THAT PROVIDE YOU SPECIFIC INDICATION HOW YOUR PLANT WILL ARRIVED AND MOST OF ALL SHIPPED YOU WHAT YOU'VE PURCHASED.

We are fully vested in our home orchard, (we have over 60 fruiting trees and are very serious about it), and have had a number of experiences with reputable nurseries. We have never had any problems with any with the one exception of AutumnRidge nurseries. Simply put, they are a hick organization with no talent and are likely some backyard redneck shop.

First, we ordered 8 pear trees and 8 cherries. The pear trees tuned out to be mainly peaches, and the threee pears were the wrong variety!!! The cherries all died within 4 weeks in beautifully cultivated, loamy, well drained soil amended to exact PH for the variety. They sent 8 more cherries, 6 have since died and they turned out to be some bizarre seed grown variety, (not budded or grafted), with cherries about 1/2 inch in diameter and bitter. We pulled them up already

Lesson learned. The time you waste on poor, (and low priced), trees you cannot get back. The growing season will come and go and you will not get any younger. Spend an extra $10 or $15 per tree and get supperior stock from Johnson Brothers nursery or Stark Borthers, (www.starkbros.com). We have had exceptional quality trees from these folks.

Good luck!

The reason for the delay in answering me, according to Melina, was because they were unprepared for 750-1000 emails and orders a day since they went online..I assume they have since beefed up their staff..
So once I get up to Ohio, I will be ordering from them again, and their prices are dirt cheap for Trees/shrubs in particular...The ones I have that are alive are all healthy specimens albiet very small and it will take awhile for them to mature...If I want instant gratification, I guess Ill just have to visit a nursery up there with a truck and trailer and haul a 15 footer home.. Where to start? I ordered 4 dogwoods, 1 hybrid poplar tree and was promised a free crepe mrytle. I did my order in April and waited for my trees to arrive. The first and would prove later the ONLY tree to arrive was the poplar tree. I planted it and it looked good so I was hopeful that the rest would soon arrive. I waited. And waited, and waited some more. Nothing.

I emailed the company. It says on the web site you can email so...I did that. It's an interent company RIGHT? They should be able to answer a SIMPLE Email right?

I never got a reply back so I waited. and I waited and I waited. No trees, no email. SO, I emailed again.

Now, mind you, each time I emailed I never said anything mean or nasty. I just explained my order and that I hadn't gotten it and was wondering when I should expect it to arrive. They never responded to my emails so I figured the next step should be to call.

They don't have an 800 # so it's long distance. Very well. I called the number listed on the site and a I reached a Security Guard. I called on a Saturday. Apparently this is a bad day to call? Even though it says on the site they are open, they aren't "really" open. Something to do with shipping times. No idea.

The security guard said to call back during the week. Very well. I waited.....for the week.

I called back. Tuesday. I reached a girl that said that in order to receive the refund which I was now wanting to get, I'd have to speak to a manager. Hmmm. Alright.

"When can I speak to a Manager?"
"She's not going to be back till after noon."
"Okay...So in like forty five minutes? It's 11:15 here for me.."
"No, more like an Hour and 45 minutes..we're behind your time.."
"Oh, Okay. I'll call back then"

I hung up. I waited...did a few chores..Then I called back.

I got that girl again. She put me on Hold. I waited...I was transferred to an older sounding lady. I figured this was the manager. I guess she wasn't because she was clueless.

She asked for my order number. I gave it to her. She put me on Hold. She came back.
She said "They can ship them to you in the fall cause we're not shipping any plants now."

I explained I really wasn't interested in receiving any plants in the spring but I rather just get a refund.

*If a company is legit...where's the problem with a refund?*

This apparently was something major, like my $20.00 order was going to break the company's bank because she put me on hold AGAIN.

I waited. A man came on the line. I could sense already the
instant attitude from him.

"Ma'am. Can I help you?"
"Yes..I made an order that I didn't receive and I'd like a refund."
"Ma'am we can ship you your plants in the fall."
"I rather not receive a shipment in the fall. I rather just get my money back."
"Ma'am why did you wait so long to call us?"
"Excuse me?"
"You made an order in April. We ship 100,000 plants..." He then proceeded to tell me about their huge overload of shipments...etc.
I explained again what I had received, the one hybrid poplar but not the dogwoods. His response?
"How do I know you didn't get your order?
"Excuse me....?"
"How do I know you didn't get your order? Anyone could call up and say that they didn't receive their order?"

What is this guy saying? I'm a liar? That I dont have ANYTHING better to do with my time than to try to spend it online or on the PHONE with a flower company trying to swindle 20 dollars out of them???? This is riduclous.

At this point, I'd had it. They could keep the plants, the $20.00. Whatever.

"Why don't you just keep my money then. I don't have time for this.." I said.
"Ma'am...We don't want to keep your money. You're saying you didn't get the plants. We're not Jesus Christ up here.."

This floored me.
"What?"
"We're not Jesus Christ here...we're not the apostles.."

I have NEVER in my ENTIRE life ever heard a customer service manager/ representative act in such a way on the telephone or in person.

I asked him not to use the Lord's name like that.

He said. "Please. I don't even think I believe in that hootany"

I told him, because I am Christian, I would pray for him. He of course, as people of his mindset react, said for me to pray for myself.

I'm still stunned that I called about my shipment that I never received and ....I get my religious beliefs insulted. Amazing.

I told him his customer service dept was pathetic and if they couldn't handle the load of shipments they had maybe they should hire more people.

He told me if I was that desperate for $20.00 that he'd give me my refund even though it was 'against company policy', which I doubt. He then said...and I quote
"Can you do me a favor? Can you NEVER order from us again.."

My response? "Gladly."

The end.
Word to the wise.
Save your money. Go to Lowe's or Home Depot or some local grower. Don't order off the internet for plants and CERTAINLY don't order from Autumn Ridge Nursery.

Back in March I ordered an "Autumn Flowering Cherry" (prunus subhirtella autumnalis) from Autumn Ridge. I had a lot of trouble finding this particular tree, and only two nurseries online had it available for order. The one besides Autumn Ridge had a larger and more expensive version of the tree. It seemed fine, but I was looking to start from a very small sapling-sized tree. Autumn ridge offered theirs in a 2-4' version for only eight dollars, which is exactly what I wanted. (I will note that I received a free hydrangea, which I didn't really want, but it's nice anyway). The tree and hydrangea both arrived together in a mailing tube maybe a few days later than I expected (no big deal). I was satified with the packaging - the roots were wrapped in damp newspaper with a plastic bag around it and rubber-banded right above the root area. The Hydrangea was already shooting out some leaves, and the tree, well...was dormant. As far as sizes, the tree was exactly as I expected. Including the root section it was about 3 ft. long. Anyway, I planted both the evening that I recieved them, following the instructions they were packaged with. The Hydrangea has been doing great since day one. The tree took about 4.5 weeks to wake up and push out leaves, but now it is progressing nicely and I have absolutely no complaints yet about its health so far. So, to sum it up, I got a tree that I really wanted (and was hard to find) for a very inexpensive price, and it has done exactly as expected so far. I am happy with this purchase.

I ordered from Autumn Ridge Nursery in April. My order came after three weeks, but several plants and seeds were missing. I emailed them about the missing items and got a response that they were reshipping the whole order. This is now the end of May and nothing has arrived. Of the plants that did arrive, none have survived. The seeds I planted have germinated, and hopefully will be something to show for my $40.00 payment.
I will never deal with this company again. Had I seen this website before I ordered, I'd be $40.00 richer today because I would never have placed the original order.

I ordered several trees for fall delivery and once I received them which took several emails and phone calls to find out where the shipment was they finally arrived. This is my first time ordering trees so I did not know what to look for on a bare root tree so now that it is spring over half of my trees are dead. None of my dogwoods or magnolias came up and one of my fruit trees is dead. Even after emailing them several times regarding this I have received no response. They have no customer service!! So, this is definitely a company I will never order from again. I know to expect some death among plants, but 1/2 is ridiculous.

The employees at this company must have been lobotomized.

I placed an order over a month ago, and requested 48 hour shipping.

Last week I called to inquire about it and was told that you were missing a digit from my credit card. I provided it and was assured the order would go out immediately.

This morning I called to inquire about the order again. They were still missing a digit for my credit card. I asked that the order be cancelled. The woman I spoke to assured me that it would be as soon as she spoke to her supervisor.

To make certain of this, I submitted a request to cancel this order via the nursery's website. In it, I expressed my dissatisfaction, and indicated that I would contact my credit card company and dispute any charges that appeared

That evening, amazingly, I received TWO shipping confirmations from them. I can't wait to see if, in this sudden burst of hyper-efficiency, they actually sent the order out twice, and/or charged my credit card twice.

No matter. I cannot use these plants now. It is too hot for me to plant fruit trees. They'll die.

I tried contacting them by e-mail, and never received a reply. I will NEVER do business with these people again.

It is early in my dealings with this company, so my negative experience is tentative.

I ordered 26 trees from Autumn ridge, and, unfortuantely, a third of them arrived in very poor shape. I've planted bare-root before, and have a good deal of experience with the trees I purchased. I suppose at the price, some may think losing a third of an order isn't bad, but 8 of these 26 trees should never have been shipped.

1 crabapple had no roots (unlike her 3 companions) and was missing bark. 5 of the 12 poplars I ordered were bone-dry, their budding crowns (also bone dry) were cracked and bent, and the 5 were half the size of their 7 companions. Finally, one of the two maples I ordered was cracked at the base.

I've planted them all, and as I suspected, I have 18 sprouting trees, and 8 sticks. I called the company, and the gentleman who answered said to send them back. I do understand the policy of having people shipped damaged/unsuitable plants/sticks back, but the reason I shopped online to begin with was for ease, and I really haven't the energy to pack up 8 sticks, drive a half hour to the post office and mail them out to replace $12 in trees (it is hardly worth the gas these days). Even though the company picks up the shipping fees, for $12 it's not really worth it to me.

I'm not yet sure what I'm going to do. I will likely bite the bullet and scale back my plans for the yard. Autumn Ridge's guarantees are nice, I just wish guaratee one would explicity state that the customer will have to ship back damaged goods (no matter how inexpensive replacements would be).

I won't bore you with the details. My experience was obviously bad enough that I am reporting on this website. I only wish that I had seen the website before I ordered plants for my mom for Mother's Day.

The first employee I talked with, Russell, was rude beyond compare. Second employee, didn't get her name, promised to ship that day via UPS, didn't happen. Third and fourth time, Carol, was of no help. Manager was busy and did not return my phone call. Refused payment with credit card company and instructed my mother to "return to sender".

Again, I wish I had seen this website first.

Along with the cherry tree replacement shipment I was supposed to receive a replacement for an apple tree but the apple tree was not included in the replacement order. I have made several calls to them about the missing apple tree and each time they tell me that the apple tree has been shipped. In spite of their claims I have still not received the missing apple tree. I have found several of their people including their shipping manager very rude to deal with over the phone. I am planning to report them to the TN Office of Consumer Affiars and registering a complaint against them. I would strongly recommend not doing business with these people.

I became aware of this website about two days after I had placed my order with Autumn Ridge and prepared myself for the worst. I had ordered two bare root red maple trees and a bare root green weeping willow tree for my gift. They arrived in a timely manner and they did look like sticks. All three of them are now thriving, including the willow, which was knocked down about ten days after it was planted, when one of our bulls broke through the fence we had put up around the tree. The next day it was knocked down again and this time the cow ate the beginnings of the new growth and scraped the bark. We then transplanted it into a more secure place but weren't very optimistic about its survival. Now it has started sprouting again and looks like it will make it. I took the time to write this because of the tendency to only comment when one has had a negative experience. I plan to order from them again.

So...I found this site after I placed my order. I must admitt that I was worried about what was going to transpire. I recieved my order the day they said I would get it. I dealt with the national audubon society before I dealt with Autumn Ridge and they ship their trees the same way that they do. Yes they were "stick like" but they had nice roots and some leaves were sprouting. They came in wet news paper wrapped in plastic, with a rubber band around it. And the whole thing was shipped in a card board tube.(The same way the Audubon Society shipe there stuff) Yes the tube was damaged but that was not Autumn Ridges fault. It was marked as fragile. I ordered 4 momosa trees and recieved a flowering cherry tree as a gift. All were in very good condition. I planted my trees yesterday. I will let you know how things work out.
ISo far I am happy with the company and my trees. Maybe people are surprised about the size of there trees when they get them. When they say 1-2 feet I guess people are expecting to see small shrubs when they are delivered...I dont know. But like I said...if the National Audubon society does it this way....its good enough for me. Mike.A Long Island NewYork

My husband went ahead & dug 36 holes (alot of work!). He actually said he felt kind of stupid going to so much trouble to bury those little twigs in the ground. We figured we should at leasdt give them a chance to see if they grow. I mean, we'd already paid for them & had them in our possesion. Had I known the condition of these trees, I would of paid a higher price to get healther ones. I wondered why they advertise "Guaranteed" to be lowest price in the USA. Now I know.

I called the company, and the customer service guy said they would send me another one at half price. So, I would have to pay for the dead one that was guaranteed to be alive, and then have to pay for another that may be alive or not. I decided to not even mention the fact that all 4 of the blackberry bushes failed to make. It's not worth it to try to argue good service out of a company, who communicates so clearly they do not intend on providing it. It is certainly worth spending an extra $20 for good products and service. From now on, my shopping will be done locally.

I telephoned the company today to follow-up on an e-mail that I sent regarding Guarantee #3. I explained to the gentleman on the phone (he didn't give his name) that I had found a cheaper price and that I sent an e-mail with the web page attached to prove the lower price. After interupting me in the middle of my sentence and telling me to hold on, the representative came back and told me that I would have to print out the web page and mail it in because "The owner makes out the checks and he doesn't deal with e-mail". He then told me that it only costs $0.39 for a stamp. It would appear to me that this is a step to discourage people from attempting to enforce their Guarantee #3. I would hope that maybe the company would consider adding that piece of information to their website. I have not received my shipment yet so I will re-post when I actually get the plants that I ordered. Hopefully my experience with the plants will be better than my experience with their customer service department.

On May 6th, 2006, tlgrace changed the rating from negative to neutral and added the following:

Well I received my shipment as scheduled on Wednesday May 3rd. If nothing else, I will say that the company delivered in a very timely manner! When I began to open the brown paper packaging that evening I was a little scared of what I might find. Once I peeled away the black plastic and sopping wet newspapers that were attached to the trees/shrubs with rubber bands, I found what I was expecting. Several of the trees/shrubs were tiny twigs with no identifiable roots, several were slightly larger branches with dried and shriveled leaves, and several were larger twigs with small root masses. As others have noted, the freebees were the worst of the bunch. Funny thing was that my 10 year-old daughter was holding a stick in her hand, which I thought was one of my “trees” until she told me she had carried it up from the back yard (LOL). Anyway, I immediately telephone the company (6:45 EST) and was politely informed by the male representative that the customer service department closed at 4:30 CST and that I would need to call back. When I hung up I sent an e-mail describing my concerns and then followed up Thursday morning via telephone. After explaining the situation to the female representative, she politely told me I would need to return the twigs without roots so that they could be replaced. While I do understand that the company it only trying to keep people honest, the process of sending the trees/shrubs back is a really big pain in the rear. When I asked the representative who was going to pay to return them, I was pleasantly surprised when she told me to send them COD. My husband and I are still debating if it is even worth the time and effort that it will take to package the sad little things and then drive 10+ miles to the local post office to send them back though. Taking into account the value of our time and the price of gas, it probably isn’t worth the trouble. After all of the time and hard work it took to plant the trees/shrubs, we are hoping that they are healthier and stronger than they appear. We have done everything possible to ensure their survival, including spending and extra $30 to purchase Watersorb Polymers that have been mixed in with the fertilized soil to help maintain adequate moisture around the roots. Anyway, I plan on following-up with Melinda at Autumn Ridge regarding the issue with the Guarantee #3. I will keep the group posted on my progress (or lack thereof).
On May 6th, 2006, tlgrace added the following:

I'm really giving this company the benefit of the doubt at this point with regards to my rating. I just spent 15 minutes trying to contact them in hopes of speaking with Melinda. After 3 times of allowing the phone to rings 20+ times with no answer, I finally saw a glimmer of hope when I heard someone pick up the phone. Too bad they immediately hung up on me! This happened not once, not twice, not even three times...four different times I heard someone pick up the receiver and then hang it right back up. A few times I let the phone ring so long that my phone actually cut off the call. Finally after 15 wasted minutes Carol answered the phone and politely told me Melinda was not in, but would be in tomorrow. I don't know about anyone else but it truely bothers me when I call a company and the representative that answers the telephone doesn't clearly state their name. I feel that anyone who provides service should tell you their name, and when indivuals don't give their names up front it sets the tone for the call. It makes me feel like the person answering the call has something to hide (ie: They know that their behavior is less than appropriate so they don't disclose their name so that customers cannot later identify them). Anyway, I asked for her name so that I can keep better track because after my poor experiences with their representatives (not all of which I've posted) I need to know who I can talk to and who I can't. As far as my plants, I'll post later when I get the ongoing issues resolved, or not.

Sorry it took so long for the update...After all of the bad experiences with this company it was nice to deal with Melinda. As she said in her post, she did take care of my issues for me. Autumn Ridge resent my damaged trees/shrubs and she assured me that the difference in the price I had found on my Gladiolus was refunded. Unfortunately I haven't verified the refund as of yet, but I trust that Melinda did what she said she would. As for the trees/shrubs, time will tell how they'll do.
