I ordered 6 dogwood trees, 5 blue spruce, 1 redbud, and 2 maples. When the order finally came we immediately planted all the above. They were pretty sorry looking but we planted them anyway. Since then, all the dogwoods are dead (probably dead when we planted them, they looked it). All the blue spruce are dead if that's what you want to call them. And one of the maples is dead. So out of a $70 order we have one maple and one redbud that made it. I tried emailing the company, no response; I called and got no one. I called again May 30 and spoke to a female that informed me they do not give refunds but they will replace the trees. I told her we already replaced the trees from somewhere else and I no longer want replacements. She then said she could give me "in-store credit" like I want to order some more dead plants! So in other words, I got ripped off! These people do not belong in business, they are not customer friendly and from the looks of all the previous comments, all they do is rip everybody off.

Unfortunately, I found this site AFTER I had already placed orders with both Autumn Ridge and Gardener's Choice, so you can imagine my horror when I read all the comments for both places. I called yesterday to find out why 8 days after receiving my confirmation email, did I not have any plants, and the lady said that I shouldn't worry until 10 days had passed. Sure enough, I had plants when I got home from work. The azaleas, though much smaller than I expected, were quite healthy. The twig trees scared me, but there was some growth on the weeping willow and the white birch. I am hopeful that the althea, purple leaf plum, and crab apple will recover and do something. I was not at all pleased with the shasta daisies, red hot pokers, and after midnight echinacea that I received dry and brown in a plastic bag. The shasta daisies, which were only piles of brown root, had mold on them. My husband noticed some new growth in the root to red hot pokers, so I photographed everything and potted it just to see, but I don't look for any of the flowers to do anything

Seems to be the normal thing with this company. They ship half dead and rotting plants. They took me for $70.00. These are the most sorriest looking plants I have ever received from anywhere. I wonder why they are still in business?? I'm going to put a complaint into my local newspaper to stop inserting their flyers. They do not need to keep ripping more people off. It took them over a month to ship my raspberry and blueberry bushes and I got one twig on dead and rotting roots. I half think they pulled these off the compost pile. They were in the mail 8 days. I emailed and told them they need to ship by 2-3 day Priority Mail. It only costs a $1 more over Parcel Post??!! What a mess. I advise NOT to order from these people. I just got a total mess and a headache.

A couple of the plants look a little "twiggy" but the roots look good and I expect them to grow. Shipment took a little longer than I expected, but as I said the plants appear to be fine. The azaleas were green and leafy and the bulbs look healthy.

Ok Here goes, I placed an order on April 11 , 2008. Order listed below. Well I did not get the order until April 26th,2008. The whole order came in a stapled tube. The American Holly had bug holes on the leaves that were still attached and the rest of the leaves were dried and fell off. The Blue Spruce were dead, dead and the North Privet Hedge was also not well.

So I took Photos of all the yard debris that I received and then I sent emails that I was returning the items and wanted a refund. I paid $7.50 to return the items with shipping conformation w/ signature I sent the items out on Monday April 28,2008 along with a letter stating that I wanted a refund. They received Wednesday April 30th,2008. I called the company on Thursday May 1,2008 after I was pushed around to 3 different people I had the pleasure of speaking to the most rude and arrogant man I think I have ever spoken to. I asked for a refund he said that there guarantee was stated and there were no refunds just replacements. Well the long and short of that conversation was this he said he would have one of his best pickers pick the order and that it would be sent out that day or at the latest the next day by Fed Ex which would have been Friday May 2, 2008.

Well no order came so on Thursday May 15, 2008 I called the company again explained the whole story again. She said I am sorry but there was no reshipment of your order. I said now I have had enough of this I want my money back!! She said I will have someone call you back. I waited no call back so of course Now to me its not the Money any more its not the Product anymore its there Word and the PRINCPLE of this matter and there Business Practice or Lack there of. So I call back again that day and I speak to two more people and the lady told me that she would have it shipped out on Friday May 16, 2008 ok. So the order comes on Tuesday May 20,2008 Now I will calmly as possible try to tell the next part of this mess. So I open the box and inside I pull out all garbage again they sent me the wrong order and all of it is about dead . I was sent 3 Rodendrum ,4 - Needle trees (NOT BLUE SPRUCE), 10 Privet Hedge and no free items were there. ( I guess that is not offered any longer now that there is a problem.) As my order states below I did not order these items only thing correct is the Privet Hedge but it will never make it, it is dried up. Of course I took Photos of this order also.

Now I call the company and the woman tells me there is no one there to handle my situation. So I say I will call back so I call back the next day that being Wednesday May 21, 2008. I speak to a woman and explain this problem I have and she just sighs over the phone like she hears this everyday. She said they will ship out a new order to me but one small problem they are out of stock of the American Holly and it will not be in until November 2008 so I say can you substitute something else she said yes so I choose Pink Crape Myrtle. I tell her that I will not pay to have this order I received back to them they will have to send a pre paid label to me to send it back to them she said they will do that.

So I still have no word it the order is sent out again or not. I will call now, So lets see. I call them back today, I am placed on hold (more than 15 min’s) hung up called back to wait to speak to the woman I spoke with last and this was my answer, the order was not sent out she did not know why she was willing to give me something free for the trouble I have had in which I declined I told her I just want what I ordered that is all nothing more nothing less. So then here is the BIG CLINCHER She said to me we have all your items in stock from your order. We have the American Holly, Blue Spruce, Privet Hedge. I say to her now you told me the other day you were out of stock of the American Holly and they would not be in until November so you had me choose something else. She said they went with another supplier well ok. I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO HECK IS GOING ON!!!! I HAVE BEEN TOLD SO MANY THINGS I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO BELIEVE .So now she said she would send out the original order on Tuesday May 27, 2008 by Fed Ex, Due to the holiday as a safe guard so the trees do not sit in a distribution center over the weekend. I should receive the order by Thursday May 29, 2008. She said she would sent me an e-mail with the tracking number and would also call me on Tuesday May 27th, 2008.

I explained my frustration to her and told her I was very dissatisfied with this company and this whole process I have gone though. She understands and I say to here I am sure you hear this all day long every day and I am sorry that I have to give her another problem we say our good bys. I don’t know if she was just giving me a line of crap or if her word can be trusted at this point I am contacting the B.B.B. today and filing a formal complaint as to their business practices. My time is worth something to me if not to them. This has become more like a job and all I done was place an order for a few items in good faith and paid for those items in good faith. All I was asking for was for them in return to do their Due Diligence as I have done.

I ordered from Autumn Ridge and then read all the negative comments regarding them on this web page and was quite concerned. I received my order yesterday and I was AWED!! The Begonia bulbs were the biggest I have ever seen in 30 years of gardening, a good 3" across, the 15 Ranunculus I ordered were in perfect condition and when I counted them, there was 25, the freebie, Pampas Grass, was better than any potted ones I had seen locally. It was well wrapped, roots still nice and damp and the plant itself was over 8" tall and in great condition. I was definitely satisfied and will be ordering from them again and recommending them to friends and family.

Not thrilled with this company...I don't expect every plant to survive shipment, but when my "rare" Green Envy arrived not in a dormant state but instead bone-dry DEAD, brittle and crumbling, the company never responded to my email communications.
The other plants that shipped (stuffed) in the same tube were in rough shape, but all are still alive.
The Japanese raspberry just flowered and now has fruit forming...the Gooseberry is healthy if slow...
Have two Filberts that are also tiny, one is doing well - well, it has leaves - and the other is struggling...these were 'dirt cheap' and I got what I paid for. Lesson learned.
Got a free 'crabapple' OF SOME SORT with that order...not sure if it really is a crabapple, labeled as such...was a dry-root twig but viable...after being potted and coddled, then in the ground for two months, now sprouting growth. So that's why this is a neutral, not a negative. The freebie turned out to be the best one of the lot.

On May 20, 2008, GardenRav Kew Gardens, NY wrote:

I placed an order with Autumn Ridge as a "test drive" (my policy with nurseries I'm not familiar with).

One item was clearly not what it purported to be; a "semi-dwarf gala apple" which clearly not grafted. It and the free flowering crabapple look identical, in fact -- and they both look just like grafting stock (the kind of tree one grows only for the roots, so that you can graft the fancier named variety on top). Being a curious sort (and after failing to receive any response from customer service) I planted both of those in a corner of my yard, just to see what they turn out to be, when maybe the (obviously Standard) apple tree starts bearing in five or so years. All the trees were quite small -- 1/4 inch or less in diameter -- they say their trees are "prepruned", which I would suggest is a rather silly thing to say about trees that are clearly whips and have never branched out! The North Star Cherry is indeed grafted, if tiny, and it does indeed look like a pie cherry tree.

All the trees (including the fruit trees, and a red-bud) were well-rooted, well-packed, and have leafed out nicely. The blueberry bush is small, but seems happy enough. The free daylily is doing fine. The foxgloves, on the other hand, were DOA.

Now to customer service --- here is my policy. Unless I've had good experience with a company in the past, I give them one shot to respond appropriately. (My time is worth something, if only to me -- and I refuse to spend it on the phone with customer service. I spend enough time doing that, willy nilly, with my insurance company.) I sent an email which explained the problems (while at the same time complimenting them on the packing and the condition of most of the stock) -- the problems being a) the dead plants and b) the non-grafted tree and c) the fact that no receipt was included with my order! (The small size of the plants I expected, based on their prices, not that that isn't worthy of comment, if you expected something different). I did not get a chance to find out what solution they might have proposed to the problems, as they never answered me at all; I had attached a copy of the receipt generated by their website when I placed the order.

However, even if they had responded, I would not have agreed to send back dead or mislabeled plants at my own expense, in order to receive a replacement; that's a waste of everybody's time and money. A tree I ordered as part of a test-drive to another nursery (and not a top-rated one, either) arrived broken off about a foot above the graft. One email, and they were sending a replacement, no questions, no postage, no waiting in the post-office. Do companies ever get scammed by people who say the plant was dead when it wasn't? Are there people who mistreat the plants and still think they're guaranteed good results? Of course. But a company gains much more in return business and good reputation for taking the customer's time and expectations seriously, than it loses to the dishonest and the hapless.

I took my test drive, and got my money's worth of personal experience -- my advice would be not to bother. But I would also advise people never to spend more than 20-30 dollars on a first order with an unknown company... or less if you can't afford to lose that.

They have ignored all emails, snail mail, getting them to answer their phone is a feat in itself, in short ZERO customer service, no refund, no plants. I wish I had checked here first, I am out over $90.

In addition they make a big low price guarantee. I found the vinca cheaper at Michigan Bulb, mailed them the catalog page as proof, was entitled to $48 refund, of course I have received nothing. The one time I've gotten through on the phone the "customer service" rep was not authorized to deal with refunds, I have to talk to the owner. Of course he's not in, couldn't even get his/her name.

I have been an avid Gardener for over 20 years and have purchased many plants from numerous mail order nurseries. I have never had any problems with plants I have received from nurseries such as; Bluestone Perennials, Fantastic Plants, Hirts Gardens, etc.

On 3/20/08 I was charged $295.35 for 2 separate orders submitted to Autumn Ridge Nursery. The $295.35 worth of plants received arrived in a small cardboard tube. I asked the mail carrier if there were any more packages which signaled my suspicion that there was something fishy. I thought to myself how can 86 plants fit into a tiny cardboard tube?

The Autumn Ridge plants were tiny, bare rooted, brown and dried out. I scratched into the wood of the brown twigs and there was no green underneath, just dried out brown sticks. The Mountain Laurels had “Cercospora kalmiae” (brown spots on the leaves caused by overhead watering) that wilted to nothing in a short week after being transplanted.

I ordered 20 lavender and 5 salvia plants, but instead I received several packets of seeds. Why does Autumn Ridge supply a customer with seeds when plants were ordered? The sole purpose of buying plants is so that we do not have to take the time, expense and patience to wait for plants to grow and mature. If I paid for plants I should not be expected to grow my own.

The entire order of these plants continues to be dead without any life whatsoever sprouting. I have since replaced all of these plants from more reliable nurseries.

I cannot begin to detail the expense, time and frustration I have been burdened with after dealing with this company. Needless to say, I filed a complaint with the Tennessee Better Business Bureau. The web site was helpful, ordering was easy, I got my plants about two weeks after my order in a cardboard tube also. All I ordered was one little frasier, a golden grass and a free hibiscous. The pine was very green and damp in its newspaper, the hibiscous a dried root... which I havent attempted to deal with yet, and the little grass was bent but damp too. Fast forward a month... the grass died and the frasier pine isnt really doing anything.. I potted it immediately after getting it but now half of the leaves are brown, the other half are still green(random leaves). I have not seen any growth.. is it dead?

Considering I got my order and it arrived in reasonable shape, I can't fault the company for my results. As for buying again from online, I don't know if it's the way to go or not.. I may try again, but won't invest a lot of money... my grandfather, who liked to play poker, told me "Never gamble more than you can afford to lose."

It has been over a month and I have still not received my order. I cannot even get a response from the company to find out where it is. I have filed a complaint with the BBB and the TN Attorney General on them so I hope something happens soon.

I would not recommend doing business with this terrible company, check out how many complaints they have had with the Better Business Bureau.

Well after over a month I just received a shipment confirmation that my order has been shipped out. I placed my order 04/03/08 and it was shipped 05/07/08. DO NOT ORDER FROM THESE PEOPLE.

Service is extremely poor -providing unreliable information and unresponsive to repeated requests. Was informed that our seed order had been mailed on 4/10 after check sent the previous week had been cashed. Despite 3 weekly calls with assurances that order was due " the next day" , one month
later still we still have yet to get the order or hear from them.
How do they stay in business? Not from me.

Well folks, after being a gardener for 35+ years, I finally got caught by this company. Oh the book is beautiful showing all of the trees and shrubs that your going to someday have, knowing that the "trees" would be small to begin I had no idea how terrible they were going to be, I ordered close to 40 trees and when they arrived in a 5" tube-I knew they would be trouble. The "dwarf" fruit trees are not even grafted and that's the only way I know of to dwarf a named variety. I'll chaulk this up as an experience and trash their catalogs from now on, I won't tell them not to send them, let them waste the money on me like I did on them. Please, if you want a chance at success with a tree or shrub, order from a high-end company rather then a rat company like this. What I received was just sad, no other words for it. Hopefully if you read this you'll take my advise and get 1 or 2 nice trees (better from a local nursery if you can find the variety you want) then to order a bunch of twigs--that I know even if they did grow, will not be what I ordered--10 years from now (if they would even live) I would end up with wild pears and apples that aren't even what I wanted. Take care and beware!

Thank you everyone for the wonderful comments. I just got a flyer in the mail from this company. Wow, they make a nice flyer, but after reading the comments, I wouldn't order a single plant from this company. Thank you, thank you for your informative reviews. Buyer Beware!

On April 13th I placed an order for a rose bush. On april 18th I received an e-mail telling me my rose had been shipped. After a week I called and asked where my rose bush was. I expressed concern that it would be dead by the time it reached me. They assured me it would not. It has now been 11 days and no sign of my rose. If and when it gets here i'll post again with the results. I most certainly will not buy from this company again. Thankfully I purchased with a credit card & I'm certain my ccc will stand behind me 100 percent.

After 20 days I called my CCC & asked that the charge be removed & they complied. They contacted Autumn Ridge with my complaint & 5 days later the rose in question arrived on my doorstep. It was in reasonably good condition which led me to believe it was shipped after my CCC contacted them. I believe if my CCC had not contacted them I would never have received the rose. 25 days to deliver is unacceptable! I still will not buy from this company again. Let the buyer beware!!

I have contacted the Better Business Bureau. If I had only researched this company on Dave's Garden before purchasing..... Here's my story!

On 4/7/08 we placed an order with Autumn Ridge nursery - for blue spruce trees, totalling $150.50. Two hours after placing order, we called to cancel. During that call to cancel we were told that our credit card was already billed, but would be refuned on 4/11. The following week we called as our credit card still was not refunded and the order was canceled - they confirmed that the order was infact canceled and would not ship. The representative stated that the "woman" who issued refunds was not in and she didn't have the authority to refund our credit card. She stated she would put a note in our account to have the refund processed when "Jane" was in.. We made several contacts after that date and spoke to the following: Sam who stated he was the Sr. Vice President, Debbie, Jane, Kellie & Russell - all CS reps. who have promised to refund our money first on April 10'th, then April 14'th, April 21'st and Sam confirmed that the refund would happen on 4/28/08 - and he stated: "Listen lady, we are very busy and we said we'd refund you on 4/28/08 and we will. The president is the only person to authorize this and he will." Sam was very RUDE and didn't want to hear anything else that I had to say. I called today 4/29/08 and spoke with Kelly and she stated that our refund was never submitted. Called back a second time and spoke to Russell, who said Jane was not the person to process refunds and he'd see what he could do for us.. We contacted our credit card company to dispute the charge in addition to the Better Business Bureau. Every time we contact Autumn Ridge -they have a different story and no one takes responsibility to solve the issue. I never received ANY merchandise and they REFUSE to refund my credit card. I have since researched this company and sadly found that this is common practice for them. I will NEVER order from this company ever again.

I wish I would have seen this site last fall, before I ordered my apple trees (4). Thankfully not a huge investment, but I was very disappointed in this company. Needless to say all 4 trees are dead. Some hope, I found 2 apple trees at Loews for the same price, they didn’t have the variety I wanted, but the trees were at least 5 times the size and looked great! Autumn nursery may have a great catalog of diverse varieties, but if they don’t survive, it doesn’t do me any good. Generally, I like to support nurseries that aren’t in Home Depot or Loews, but never again will I order from Autumn Nursery.
