My experience with this company was overall positive because of the following reasons.
1. I got almost all my orders( only one left).
2. All plants that I received were healthy and are growing well so far.
3. Customer service was good whenever I called.
4. Packaging was very good for roses & jasmine.
5. I received emails after the plants were shipped.

Things that I did not like:

1. Plants are really small (3 inches). At least they should mention the shipping height of the plant /container (rather than just saying 'potted')
2. lot of items are back ordered. It took about 3 months, 2 months after the zone open date for shipping. It did not affect me much because of unsteady weather patterns this year in MI.

First and foremost, don't make your customers pay long distance to sit on hold forever to get a replacement for a plant that was shipped to them dead in the first place. Hint to anyone wanting to request replacements: Go to their website and send in the request with your name and customer number, as this is what I have done recently and it has been the fastest action I have ever gotten out of this company (Yes, that can be taken positively, but only barely so...read on). Of course, they keep sending the replacements in small, separate shipments, so one must wonder how much more cheaply could they sell the plants if they would:
#1 Send a quality, live plant that hasn't fallen out of it's miniscule container and lost all it's dirt (of which there wasn't enough to cover the roots in the first place) into the shipping box, damaging the foliage (which is usually dried up and/or rotting from too much moisture i.e. those paper bags), drying out the root ball (some of which are poster children for dying due to root bound rot or no roots at all) to the point that they can't be resuscitated (why should that be a chore for me anyway if I am paying for healthy plants?).
#2 Send a healthy plant of decent size the first time, so that they wouldn't have to send a replacement that is (on occasion) 2 to 5 times the size of the original (where the heck was this plant the first time?), thus saving the need and expense of shipping a replacement.
#3 You already have friendly phone staff, so give your customers a toll free number and get your reps better software so they can expedite the calls more quickly.
#4 Quit placing all your emphasis on including those stupid ads, flyers and crap, and improve the way you pack the plants for shipment (I swear those paper bags are the most inefficient method of containing a plant that I have ever seen) so they arrive healthy and you cut down on the need for replacements (thus improving company profits, duh).

I will end this now, as it is starting to sound like a rant, which is not my intention. I am merely pointing out obvious deficiencies that I am certain most of their customers have observed or experienced first hand. Michigan Bulb, correct these problems and you just might take a lot of business away from your competitors. Remain the same, and know that you have lost at least one more.

On Feb.16-05, I ordered from Michigan Bulb Co;
1 angel trumpet, 3 toad lily, 3 bee balm, 12 peacock orchid, 1 clemantis, 5 firecracker, & 3 Penstemon, & included check for $32.28.
My check was cashed right away. On 4-06-05, I received partial order of teeny-weeny bulbs about the size of a small grape, in a box about 1/3 full of loose dirt.
Clemantis, Bee Balm & angel trumpet not included. I e-mailed to inquire & received "will look into it" reply, plus "meanwhile, look into all their great offers!" All have died except 3 orchids.
On 4-13-05 I rec'vd the Clemantis (if you can call a 2 inch tall, & gasping for breath , a plant, costing me $10.00, which has since died. ) and dry, deadish bee balm, also since died.
When I inquired about the angel trumpet, "they'll look into it," & later "can't find your order, etc. will I send new info".
By this time, I am rather aggravated!
So, I wrote 'em back & told them to cancel the trumpet, cancel the meager refund & cancel any e-mails to me, as I hear they've been in bankruptcy, they probably don't have the money any way, & told 'em to stick it where the sun don't shine! (there's more than one place the sun don't shine).
They sent more replies & I forwarded them right back to them! I do not want to hear from THEM again!
By the way, this ruins any hopes other plant companies who may want my orders may have. I feel one company is as good as any other. I'll buy locally from now on or do without! At least I'll get to see what I'm getting for my money & ALIVE! Locally, I could have bought about 12 nice plants already thriving, for what I wasted on Michigan Bulb Co.
As all have probably heard a thousand times, "BUYER BEWARE! IF it looks too good to be true, it probably isn't. (P.S. I have several plant catalogs & MOST of them have the EXACT SAME PICTURES , guess they're all in cahoots of seeing who can "take" the most suckers? Betty

I am new to online plant ordering, after reading alot of the post here i was afraid because i had made a large order with michigan bulb. Well everything turned out really good. The plants were a bit on the small size, but i expected that due to the price, plus it stated it on the web site. I ordered around 50+ trees, shrubs and perineals. I did loose the ground cover i ordered, it showed up really dry and one hydrangea, plus two dogwood trees i bought came in clearly dead ( dogwoods i am told that grow locally wild do not transplant easily, so i was not too surprised they did not make) So i emailed the company and stated what i lost and the next day got a return email that my replacement certificate was on its way. (I did not ask for a refund) I have a whole basket of things i now want and will be returning to michigan bulb to purchase them. I must say that my butterfly bushes and other plants have doubled in size in only a couple weeks. My other trees are all filling out nicely with rich green leaves. I will be doing buisiness with them again.

I have a note to myself in my garden journal to NEVER buy from this company again. I have been only disappointed by their plants quality and the way my order was handled. Every plant I got from them was either dead or dying. They were so small and puny, I'm not surprised that they couldn't live thru the shipping process. My order was so messed up and incorrect, I didn't even try to fix it, I just didn't want to even waste my time with such inferior plants. I won't be back.

I'm yet another gardener suckered in by Michigan Bulb's
$20. coupon. While I did recieve everything I ordered in
a (somewhat) timely manner, I've had to call them (on
my dime- no 1-800 ph. # available) twice to replace plants
that were in poor condition when they arrived. The first time
the customer service agent I talked with was very helpful
and seemed to genuinely care about my issue. The
second time I called was in regard to the replacement plant
(Blue Sea Holly) from the first call. The Blue Sea Holly
arrived as a small three pony pack, all DEAD. The agent I
talked with a second time tried to tell me that they don't send
Blue Sea Holly in pony packs, but bare root. I KNOW the
difference between a bare root and a pony pack, I also
KNOW that what they sent me WAS, in fact, a pony pack of
Blue Sea Holly. This second agent was somewhat
condescending and accusatory. Needless to say, while
Michigan Bulb DOES have a few quality employees in
their customer service dept., they also have a few bad
apples (pardon the pun!). I wouldn't say the quality of
their plants is the best, either, but again, they do stand by
their replacement policy.

I have gotten some poor quality plants in the past, but this year I was pleasantly surprised. I ordered 6 perennials, 2 Black Magic elephant ears, and a dwarf banana tree. Yes, the plants are small, but really no smaller than what I've received from Wayside and Bluestone. The packing material is vastly improved from the past. The cartons were designed to protect the plants and hold in the soil. All arrived moist, alive, and intact in two separate shipments a few weeks apart. I guess it's hit and miss, and I wouldn't order things that I ABSOLUTELY had to have within a certain time frame. The things I ordered were just extra "nice to have" plants, and I'm glad I used the $20 coupon to order them. I got all 9 plants for $22, including shipping. (I would have to pay more than that for just the elephant ears at Wayside.)

I ordered Brugmansias recently from Michigan Bulb. I received a partial order on 4/18. Two of the three were dead: leaves dry, crumbled and the dirt all over the box. I sent a jpeg that afternoon to customer service to illustrate the poor condition, and received a response that they would contact me w/i 24 hours. I just got an e-mail this morning, 4/29. Too bad I already phoned them 4/20 at my expense (no 800 #) and admittedly, they'd offered to send a free replacement order. Additionally, I received 1/2 of the remaining 1/2 of my order last Monday. It arrived dead, too.
I called them this morning to tell them that customer service in their internet dept. must not know that their cust serv. phone dept already "replaced" the order, asking when it would be shipped. They couldn't tell me; had no idea. I asked to speak to a supervisor and was told they'd have to call me. I will make certain that I tell everyone NOT to order from Michigan Bulb. Gardeners have to take advantage of opportune windows of time for planting their gardens; we don't have the time to mess around with shipments arriving dead or customer service departments getting back to us 10 days after the fact. It's companies like Michigan Bulb that unfortunately give some potential shoppers cold feet for buying plants/seeds/bulbs on the internet.

Well how can something be on back order when you dont even know what I ordered. Then they looked up the wrong name and told me I recieved this order in 2004..WELL HELLO
if i got the order in 2004 why am I paying them in 2005???
I really think this company needs to either go under or get it together..I remember when i was younger my mother ordered from them and she only dealt with them because they were a good company..What happen?? There's too much compitition out there for the company to be treating people like this.
Then to argue with me and tell me I ordered something I didn't order...HMMMMM what happen to the old book when
Rule #1 the customer is always right
Rule # 2 If the customer is wrong SEE rule #1???
Well when my business gets up and running I will let everyone know and I will believe the customer is always right and if your wrong i will remember rule #1....
Always remember the business rule of thumb..people make your business and people break your business..
Michigan Bulb has just lost another customer..I have removed myself from their mailing list..I do not wanna deal with people who take and don't give..Back orders are one thing but telling me I am wrong is another...HOW long can 1 item be back ordered?? If you can't fill the orders then dont sell the product till you have enough to selll.....Good bye to you michigan bulb

We found an order form in our Sunday paper for the ornamental pampas grass we had fallen in love with when we saw it in SC last fall, and promptly placed an order. We ordered early in January of 2005, paid by check, and in turn, got a card back stating our order would be sent between 3/23/05 and 4/22/05. Our check was cashed within 6 days of their receiving it. As of today, the 28th of April, we have not received our order and an email to the company got us a reply that they would respond within 24 hours with an answer to our problem. Since I sent the email on a Friday, late, I allowed for a weekend and thought I would surely have a reply late Monday, nothing. I sent a second email on Tues after I waited to make sure nothing came in during what would be their business hours. Still nothing, neither our order nor a reply to what happened to our order. I am getting ready to send another email this evening, but frankly doubt I hear anything. It wasn't a large order, but it's the principle of the thing, we ordered in good faith, the check has been cashed, we have nothing to show for our money. EXCEPT we do have lots of gardening catalogs arriving dail. It seems they were as quick to put our name on mailing lists as they were to cash our check. We are not happy and will not do business with them again. BUT we want what we paid for first. We live in Indiana, a 2 hour drive west of where the company is located in Lawrenceburg, IN, at this rate, we could have taken a day trip and picked up the darned order, planted it and been happy.

I have only ordered from Michigan Bulb one time, but based on that order I would again. They are very inexpensive and all the plants I have ordered from them have started growing immediately after they were planted. I ordered some hostas, three astilbe and a hellebore and all are doing well. There prices are so much cheaper than Home Depot or Lowes, so I think I will continue to shop there. I was surprised by the number of negative comments on this site. Maybe ordering bulbs is the way to go with them.

I used the ten dollar certificate towards the purchase of the dwarf citrus collection. Can't wait to get them!
So far this year I have received blueberry plants from Michigan Bulb. They are small but in good shape.

Some people are emailing, calling,or mailing their orders wanting them in like a week. Does anybody understand that we are taking non stop calls from 7am till11pm? We would like to please every customer in every way possible but unfortunatly we can't. It is also the peak season and like i said we are getting tons of orders so we are either running out of items or they are in backorder. I ask that you please be patient as we are trying our best to help everyone out. I order from this company in Feb. I ordered over 200 plants from them. I was told they would shipped out 3-4 weeks. When nothing come, I called customer service. I was told on that first all all but five of my order would shipped out the next day. The rest was on back order. Three weeks later when nothing came I called back. I was told this time, everything was on its way. As they told me, a truck came in the day the order was to be shipped out and all my back orders were on that truck. Ok, so I waited another three weeks. Nothing. When I called back I was told everything had been shipped out. Well, I put the order on my atm card. Nothing had been pulled out. So, when I brought this up, I was transfered to someone else. She told me nothing was being shipped EXCEPT one of my plants. I lost it. After fighting with that lady, she took my number and said a manger would call me back. The next day nothing , so I called back and we told that the order had been cancelled the day before!!!!! I never ordered it cancelled even though the thought did cross my mind. I asked to speak with a manger and this lady put me right on with the manger. I was told there was nothing she could do. I would have to reorder everything. Not on you life lady!!!!!The lady then went as far as to tell me, that she had been working there for over 15 yrs and had never heard of a customer having such a hard time. I was the first. hahaha Nice huh?

Then today, a catalog for Gurney's came in the mail today. I looked through it. I decided to call them to order some stuff. I looked at the number and it looked familar. I looked up the number for Michigan and they are one in the same.
We arent dealing with the nurseries themselves but with a customer service answering service!!! I plan on gettting a hold of the nurseries themselves and let them know the problems going on with their answering service.

If I can deal straight from the nurseries, I will but I wont go throught the service again.

Yes - they do send little plants - that is because they are propagated from other plants. Plus, they survive transplant much better than root bound plants found elsewhere. The plants in the catalog are mature - meaning 3rd year old plants and if you prepare your planting area the way you should - yours will look that way too! I will agree that some of the packaging could be better, but if you plant them as you get them per the instructions, you will be happy. That was on monday 4-4-05 and today 4-8-05 I received my order. I was very pleased with the quality, it was a big healthy rose with great roots. Now I can't wait to see it in bloom! I think that I will try them again for some other items in the future.

I have never done business with Michigan Bulb until this past February. After receiving dozens of catalogs with $20 off coupons to attract my interest I finally decided to place a small order to try them out. I also placed an order with Spring hill Nursery for similar items on the same day so I could compare the companies. The first weekend in March I received an email from Springhill informing me that my items had shipped. Since I knew it was timed to coincide with the idea planting time in my area I assumed my Michigan Bulb items would ship soon. The next weekend my SpringHill items arrived and went into my garden. I waited 2 more weeks and nothing from Michigan Bulb. By now the lilacs and hyrdangeas I had altready planted were leafing out anf flourishing. I emailed Michigan Bulb to inqire about my order, an automated response informed me I would be contacted within 24 hours......I waited.........and waited.............and waited some more. SIX days later I was given the "courtesy" of a reply.
"Thank you for your email. Currently the item(s) are on backorder, and we are unable to provide an estimated ship date. Please check back and we'll be happy to look at your order again".

One week later I inquired again. FIVE days later I get
""Thank you for your email. Currently the item(s) are on backorder, and we are unable to provide an estimated ship date. Please check back and we'll be happy to look at your order again".

If customer service cant tell me when it will ship. WHO can???? and why aren't they responding to emails instead??
I am now 5 weeks past the idea planting time for my area. My last email to Michigan Bulb was to cancel my order.

I also contacted the bank that my credit card is with to ensure that ANY and all charges from Michigan Bulb are declined.

Placing an order with Michigan Bulb was nothing more than a waste of my time. They don't have the items they advertise and they have no idea when or if they ever will.

Had to try a few "Nearly Black" roses. Ordered 6 of them with the special $20.00 off coupon. Order was shipped very fast (2 weeks ago) and the quality of the bareroot roses for the money is great. All are potted-up and budding out as of today. Have never had problems with unusual rose bushes from this vendor.

I placed a large order this winter, mostly of sale items. When my order was shipped out, I received notification, which was helpful. I was a little worried because my plants were sent via the post office, on a Friday...meaning my plants would sit in a warehouse over Sunday. But I received the order in a timely manner, and overall, am pleased. Of the live (dormant) plants I ordered, the Bee Balm was in excellent condition when I unpacked it. The Toad Lilies looked a bit more wilty, and one had come out of it's packaging, but I've planted them and think they will pull through. All the bulbs and tubers looked to be in good condition.

I will order from Michigan Bulb again.

Just received three roses that look huge and healthy. Very impressed. Also had a terrific customer service experience, with two reps responding to an e-mail I sent. My one complaint is that the roses arrived a little early--it's still pretty cold near Chicago!

I'm expecting more plants from Michigan Bulb in the coming weeks, so stay tuned!

Oh boy... did I ever find out the hard way.
Like so many of you I didn't check here until after my order didn't show up.
After reading all the horror stories I called their customer service line. After 3 calls and being "disconnected twice" personally I think they hung up on me.
I found out 90% of my order was out of stock and would not be shipped until October. (I ordered SUMMER BULBS) Needless to say I canceled my order.
I'm so disappointed I've been preparing the ground for my summer bulbs for weeks and now I'm left high and dry.

On my 3rd call I did finally get some who helped me and didn't hang up on me.

Never again! I would not advise anyone to order from them, it's a crap-shoot. (Remember when you gamble, "the house always wins")

I ordered from Michigan Bulb this year for the first time. I took advantage of their 20.00 coupon and bought a ton of stuff. I received 2 of my mock oranges(I haven't determined if they will be ok yet) I potted them as soon as I got them but they looked really dried out. I called their customer service the other day because on their invoice, the rest of my order should have already arrived. The lady told me that they had NO IDEA when they would ship my order. She said it was all in stock but they had no shipping date for my area. She told me that my area just opened. My area has been open for weeks!! I am in zone 8. My neighbors yards are already showing color. I cancelled my order. I am not going to wait and possibly never get my stuff or get them too late. Luckly they never charged my card for the other part of my order. I won't ever order from them again. Their right hand has no idea about their left!

I received a replacement Mock Orange on 3-7-05 and it must be 2 foot tall. I was very impressed with my replacement and the time frame that all of this was handled in.

So far, so good. I was worried by all the neg. remarks I read AFTER I placed my order. I recieved the first of my shipment yesterday and it is a tea-rose that appears (to my untrained eye) to be in excellent health. The rest of my order is scheduled to ship on 3/6, so I'll have more to offer then. The only concern I have is that I am not a very experienced gardener and it is still frosty and cold in my area. I will pot this rose for now and see how things go from there.

I ordered a good bit of items last fall from Michigan bulb including a red hydrangea which when it arrived was a 2 inch stick with about 5 roots attached to it. I planted it and tried to baby it into something and it just simply did nothing. I was a bit upset about the hydrangea, not due to the size it was when it arrived but because it was so obviously dead upon arrival I would have been embarrased working for that company packing this dead twig in a box to send to a customer that had actually paid money for it. On the other hand I ordered quit a few bulbs which i planted in the fall and with the warm weather we have had in spokane washington in february i can already see the bulbs sprouting. So...so far so good on the bulb front...I will be interested to see if the bare root hosta i ordered will actually grow into anything cause it sure didnt look like much when i planted it...we shall see....

As a novice gardner, I ordered from this company on several occasions. I was always disappointed. Now with more experience, I also know they were often dishonest. The plants were small, dead or mismarked. After I ordered a rose of Sharon that turned out to be a wild rosa rugosa I got smart and never used them again!

Always remember that when prices appear too good to be true......there is usually a catch. This company is also notoriously hard to contact and they never lived up to any promise regarding hardiness or replacement.

I ordered a tiger lily collection from MB. They shipped me TWO collections. I called to inform them, and the nice fella I spoke with said, "Hey, it's spring, enjoy your bulbs!" So I got 28 lilies for the price. The bulbs might not have made the trip back, since they'd already been out of the ground awhile, but MB didn't have to give them to me. I think they genuinely want to make customers happy. It must be hard to deal with people who see pictures of mature plants and bulbs in the catalogs and expect to get something in a box that looks like that. Catalogs show potential, so things will sell. If the catalog was full of pictures of sticks with one or two leaves, would you buy 'em? Nothin' looks great when it's dormant! In the real world, big things grow from seeds and "sticks." Gardening is about patience, and the payoff. If you want that mature tree in the picture NOW, go to the garden center and pay $100 for it. (and no I don't work for the MB company.)

In the fall of 2003, I ordered 17 plants and 12 bulbs.

This spring, only two bulbs bloomed and two plants, the display was very unimpressive with the plants and bulbs that grew.

There are too many other quality nurseries out there to waste time, money and effort, even with a discount coupon, with this company

I am extremly disappointed in my repeat order and will never order from this company again! I placed an order in Feb. and expected to recieve my order in the spring. In May after placing several calls to customer service...on my dime, since they don't have an 800#, I received part 1 of my order than a couple weeks later part 2 of my order and then today June 22 I got part 3. My credit card was charged twice the amount tha it should be, with 4 charges and the coupon only applied as a percentage of the first order. Then nothing on the other orders. What a billing nightmare! The first plant I got wasn't bad. The second ones were very tiny, but healthy. The plants I got today have brown spots all over them and they substituted what I ordered for another plant besides. The other "plants" I ordered are just bags of roots. I feel totally ripped off! Off course I disputed my credit card overcharge. I have spent so much of my time reconciling their billing and I am totally annoyed. Never again!!!

I ordered in August. They said the shipment would be made between October-November. I emailed them to remind them of the order, to which they said it was backordered. Let them know that that was not acceptable, they put a rush on it and I had it in less than a week. The plants seem to be doing very good, they were a pretty good size (except for one which died). Otherwise their customer service people were very nice and helpful.

I just received my order yesterday. The plants were TINY, but in good shape for the most part. Think of the 6-pack of annuals at Walmart. Now split one of those in half into 3 of the little "cells" that contain the plants. That is what you get when you order "3 plants for $4.99" from this company. I think that is pricey because they are even smaller than the plants I get from Springhill, which are notoriously small. But, if these thrive, I will be fine with it.
With that as my disclaimer, my sweet pea, jacobs ladder, aster super, and lenten rose were fine. The canterbury bells were sent bareroot, but had green stems which was surprising. The stem looked black and rotten, but I peeled back that part (just one layer) and the stem underneath was green and healthy. Roots looked fine too so I planted them. We'll see! Now the bee balm had one plant that was ok (again, as defined above- small but healthy). The second little cell had what looked like a cutting off a real bee balm, but it had no roots and wasn't even in dirt. The third cell was totally empty. So I sent them an email via their customer service link requesting a replacement of this item. I will give them a chance to make it right, and if they send me an acceptable replacement I will consider change my rating to positive. If all this stuff actually survives winter and blooms in the spring, I will for sure change it to positive. But I think it is more economical to just get seeds for any of the plants I bought and start them inside over winter. I would have more, and larger, plants to transplant in the spring for much less $$.

All the plants have been healthy, maybe a little dry, but nothing a good soaking won't cure. All of my bulbs looks ok, but I really won't know until next spring. So far, I have been happy with this company, especially for the price. I called to place my order because their website wasn't working correctly. The CSR was VERY friendly and answered several of my questions and helped me decide what would be best for my garden. After reading the reviews from Garden Watchdog, I got worried about my order. If for some reason I don't get everything I ordered or have problems with billing, I will be happy that I used my credit card: they can stop payment until the situation is resolved (I had to do this to a local repair shop one time, boy, do they work hard to help you when they realize they aren't going to get paid until you are happy with the service!) I will keep you informed if I get the rest of what I paid for and how my bulbs do in the spring!

I learned with these people that if you call immediately, they will always try to make you whole, one way or another. To be honest, I've used coupons from them each time I bought, so the price paid is usually so little that it is worth the risk, especially compared to the local garden center extortionists.

When things die, show up dried up, or just plain don't perform, they actually really do honor their warranty.

They are not the best, but they are by far not the worst, especially if you know what to expect.

I will keep buying from them, even though you never know what will happen. But their customer service always comes through
