I placed an order with Michigan Bulb on 3/29 which was before I came upon this site. I started to read the reviews and was a little skeptical about my order- but waited intently. I received an email yesterday with a shipping confirmation and there was the box today when I got home. Now that's FAST! I was positively surprised at how well packaged everything was. Not only that, the plants were in excellent condition. No yellowing or wilting leaves. You must understand that when ordering from Michigan, the plants are small. Why else would you get them for peanuts? Like others have commented, if you are looking for instant gratification- I suggest a local nursery or if your on a budget like me- Wally World or Lowes, Home Depot etc. I am a pretty patient gardner, so this is right up my alley.
Most all the bareroots from the Everlasting Garden I purchased had new leaves/growth, and great root systems and look very promising. I found one bulb that might be a dud, but I am giving it a shot. I planted most everything after I opened the box and have a little more to plant tomorrow. I absolutely will be ordering again from them, very soon before the hot Carolina weather comes. At this point, I would say I had a very delightful experience with Michigan, and hope my new garden thrives. I will report back in the fall.
By the way, I placed an order for Brecks prior to this and still have yet to receive it-(order status states 4/19) and Direct Gardening is giving me a generic email and no order status at all.

The following are items I orders from Michigan:

1 14112 PINCUSHION FLOWER YELLOW $0.000 $0.00

I have asked them for replacements of some plants that I ordered in 3/05. The hydrangeas that I ordered were supposed to be tri-color. I have never heard of one shrub with more than one color bloom. These never got taller than about 5 inches and only had 2 or 3 leaves. I fertilized them and don't expect them to ever do anything.
Another plant was the fern leaf bleeding heart. When they came up in the past, they looked like miniatures and only got about 3 inches tall. Last year only one came up (I had 3). I have had more luck with plants that I grew from seed!
The lady ferns from this same order have really done well also the hardy lillies and bittersweet.
I am hoping for some kind of replacement and think from now on I will deal with local growers and nurseries.

On a scale of 1-10, I'd have to give Michigan Bulb about a 7. It wasn't the best, most positive experience of my life, but it was a little better than neutral. The pros: great prices(57 shrubs and trees for about $240), decent variety of plants available, website easy to navagate, shipment was correct and well-packaged, and plants arrived with good roots. I also received 10 free shrubs with my order. The cons: in short, very poor communication. (The website doesn't put enough emphasis on the very small size of the plants or shipping-related issues, such as correct shipping dates or the "dormant" state of the plants.) Too, the telephone number is not toll-free, waited on hold for 5-10 minutes, and customer service was often in a language that was supposed to be English, I think. My shipment was in transit from OH to MO for 8 days. In all, I was pleased with the end-products but would have worried less if I had more information up-front from the company.

I order every spring from Michigan Bulb and another online store and Michigan Bulb has the better plants for sure. In fact I just received a new order and the plants and bulbs are in great condtion and look to be really healthy.

I have ordered from this company before and I am usually very leary about it. After all, I believe you get what you pay for. I decided to order from them again this year because of the good prices and the good customer service when things don't survive. Well I had a real surprise! Everything arrived in great shape! The improvement this company has made in it's packaging is fantastic! Last year everything was clumped together in a plastic bag, half rotten and smashed. I couldn't even identify most of it. This year everthing was packaged in protective plastic containers that protected both the plant and the roots. All the plants were clearly marked and shipped in a cardboard box. I am very happy with this years shipment and kudo's to Michigan Bulb for making these much needed improvements! I will most certainly order from them again!

I read all the negative posts about michigan bulb before making my purchases, but did so anyway with the thought that the price was so low - well what could it hurt.
After the coupon- i ended up paying about .50 cents each plant.
My plants took a very long time to arrive- 12 days from the time they were shipped - although most arrived in ok condition- my order was delivered in early april where it was'nt to hot - but i would see this as a problem if it were mid-summer. I called mb and asked wondering where the plants were and they said their standard shipping is 10-14 days !! Imagine your seedlings trapt in shipping for that long on 90 degree days.
i think alot of the reason these mail order growers get a bad rep is because people are expecting to receive plants like they would buy at the local nursery. Maybe they should make people more aware of what they are buying.
I got what i expected. And overall for the price - it was worth it from what i see- thats the msin reason they still get a positive from me.
alot of the plants are just a little small, but most of the plants have decent root systems and great potential to flourish over the summer.
If it helps anyone with a future purchase- i will give a run down of my order and opinion: keep in mind im taking price into big consideration. And dont buy from them without a big coupon savings!!
-6 carnations- great roots, good size and lots of green.A+
-4 butterfly bushes-great condition,great roots ,kinda small.still A.
-6 sweet william-No green- could barely find the roots!.but these plants are usually easy growers so they may surprise me. not a recommendation.
-6 everbearing strawberries- No green at all, but good roots, may loose a couple but they have potential. dont bother walmart has better.
-6 scarlet bee balm & 6 dwarf columbine-small plants, both are small root systems but starting to sprout already. worth the money.
-a few bulbs that were not of great size but worth what i paid. they should produce .
I will have to post in a couple of months to either rave or complain. I would hope a few other buyers will to!
This web-site is a great help.

its now mid july and surprisingly most of the plants are in great shape and to a great size about that of what would be bought at a nursury. i did loose a few and mb did replace them- but it took them about month to ship. there shipping is terrble and i noticed ya never know what your gonna get - some large- some small, but still worth the money.

Another update- i received another order- and again some are in great shape while others are just sticks (very depressing to look at) ...but i will keep in mind they are dormant. On the other hand almost everything i planted from them last year has already returned and is doing good. but not 1 strawberry came back..while ALL of my local strawberrys are healthy.

I have purchased from MBC in years past and if I had a problem they would refund or send out new plants. Up til this last phone call you would get customer service that was USA based.... now that service seems to be oursourced (at least my last call was-I had called to add more to my order which the customer service rep didn't seem to understand)... this is not that great at the moment.

However, I live in zone 3 and it often gets to 50- here in the winter... I have had several of their lily bulbs make it through that. Their plants do come with a lifetime guarantee, I have not taken advantage of that as I compare my gardening loss with other Northern gardeners after a few years even the best plants will suffer loss in 50 below plus temps, thaw and freeze lol.

I have just placed an order with them through their email offer of 50% off of everything including the buy one get one offers.

I have found their bulbs in the past to be medium sized to top sized and in very good condition.

I placed my order Saturday 3/24, the order was shipped Friday 3/30, and I received all my plants in perfect condition the following Tuesday. Yes, the plants are small but they're all very healthy, and arrived well-packaged. As other reviewers mentioned, the order form can be confusing- I thought I was ordering 12 lavendar plants (4 orders of 3) but I received only 4 plants, each individually bagged.

I was very impressed with how quickly this package shipped and arrived- I would definitely order from them again. I live in Northwest Washington.

It has been a year since I planted these, and all the plants are doing great! The mix up with the lavender was my fault- I didn't realize the plants would be SO small. There were 3 seedlings per bag and I didn't know it, but they sent more right away when I asked about it. The lavender are large and healthy, the hosta did great all summer (it's too early for them to be up yet this year), and the dianthus would have survived had a friend not thought they were weeds and pulled them up! I would definitely order from them again.

My order arrived within one week of my receiving notice of its shipment. The toad lilies were very tiny and frail-looking, but they're still alive and looking very green. The creeping sedum was also very tiny, but it's also still alive and slightly taller. What is growing best are the bare root crazy daisies I purchased (I personally have the best of luck growing bare root plants). I certainly hope that the daisies grow up to be the great colors shown in the catalogue. Having had a coupon for $25 makes me feel ok about the small size of the plants when they arrived; and I'm glad they look they're all making themselves at home.

This is the first time I ordered from MBC. I ordered two collections, some strawberries, and a blueberry plant on Feb. 19th. The first collection (everlasting garden) arrived in the mail just short of 3 weeks after I placed the order. Some of the very tender bare root flowers looked very dry. I'd say about 4 out 6 of the painted daisies, sweet williams, carnations and hollyhocks made it. The rest seem to be holding their own - not a lot of new growth, but still green. All of the bulbs are now showing healthy growth. The second part of my order came today (3/26). All but the blueberry plant came. All of the plants in the package today look very well taken care of. They are obviously dormant, but still with great root systems. The only comment I have is I received several substitutions for my second garden (butterfly and hummingbird garden). However, I will say that since they substituted items - they seemed to overcompensate for the lack of my original items. Also, the estimated ship date keeps changing. It's not a true indicator of when your items will actually ship. I wish they would change their shipping method, too. The days between my email shipping confirmation and actually arriving at my door was at least six. Very hard on plants. I know they don't charge a lot for shipping, but I for one would pay a little extra to get the plants sooner. Still waiting for my blueberry plant ... hope it arrives before it's too late to plant.

I spent over $300.00 with this company last year. Two of the complete gardens I ordered for a huge freshly dug up garden never arrived despite repeated maddening calls and assurances they would ship. That, as it turned out, was a blessing. The plants that came were the sorriest messes I have ever seen. Sure they replaced them, with more dead or dying plants. Out of $250.00 worth of received plants the dahlias and lilies were the only plants that thrived. The rest barely made it to mid summer. I finally called them and wrote and told them to take me off their mailing list,if I ever received anything from them again I would sue. It is not worth the effort of the repeated calls and heart break. My husband STILL reminds me of the loss. Don't go for the buy 1 get 2, buy 1 get 3 free offers.3 free dead plants are no better than 1. They don't refund, they replace. Two or more dead replacements later you still have dead plants and a phone bill from compliants. I threw tons of wildflower seed down on the garden that we had dug in mid June and had a car stopping garden. Use anyone else, use seeds, but spare yourself the heart break and repeated assurances which are all lies. I don't know how they stay in business.

I have a friend who ordered the Royal Paulownia Tree from MBC, twice. The first one grew great, but never bloomed, he called about the problem and they informed him that to bloom the tree needs to grow with only one trunk. The first one has multiple trunks. The second tree ordered about 2 years ago is now about 12-15 feet high and expected to bloom this year.
I will be ordering 2 of the Royal Paulownia Trees this spring, plus other plants as well.

Not only was it a dead order but it took forever to receive. I called the customer service line 3 times. Twice I was hung up on and finally the 3rd attempt to get a refund I spoke with someone that was extremely rude. They say that they are refunding my credit card so we will see. The lady wanted to argue about the fact that they send their plants dormant and I definitely know the difference of "dormant" and "dead" and these were most definitely dead. I would advise everyone to go to Dutch Gardens or a local nursery rather than order from this company unless you like you plants to be extremely small or dead. Such a waste of time!!!!!

I placed my order with MB on January 13, 2007. I happened to hit the site with a wonderful sale going on! 2 for 1, 3 for 1, etc. As a matter of fact, when I went back to add more from DH’s machine, those prices weren’t reflected anymore.

I was a little concerned when I saw so many negative responses. However, it seems that so many really are having positive experiences now, that I am once again exceptionally excited about my order, and can’t WAIT for it to arrive!

My order is north of 200.00. I have a yard that was neglected by previous owners and now I want to make a mess!

I must admit, I’m more than jealous of the person that ordered on March 3 and already has their order, but that person is located in SC. I’m sitting with my engine idling in Illinois.

Order form was confusing for me. Items when I thought I purchased 3 sets of 3, the confirm hit as “3” while others did hit as “9.” But I’m ok with that. I’ll know better next time.

Examples of some of the items I ordered:

Angel Trumpet Collections (Brugs) – 9
Pink Angel Trumpets (Another Brug)
Clematis Collection
Clematis Grab Bag
Royal Paulownia Trees
Pink Cascade Weeping Peach Trees
Purple People Eaters (Datura)
Asiatic Lily Collections
Jackmanii Clematis
Various other Lily Specials
Numerous other things

I’m far too excited about this order and can’t wait. I’m driving DH insane waiting for him to run the little tiller for me.
“Are we there yet?”
No.
“Is it time yet?”
No.
“Are we THERE yet?”

“Is it time? Are we THERE YET?”

Update: I received more of my order. (The balance will soon arrive.)

I'm changing my rating to positive. Almost everything was wonderfully packaged, healthy and in good shape.

Only a couple of items, bare root things, look sketchy. I'm going to try to nurse them back to health. But the paulownias, the brugs, clematis, etc., looks wonderful so far!

I've got to say, based on what I have so far, I would definately order again from MB.

One thing--I had about half a garbage can of plastic left over after unpacking them--but I did end up with decent sprouted cuttings that I could easily repot. I jumped for this deal because it was by far the best deal on olive trees I could find anywhere, and I was a bit concerned due to all the negative comments, but I have to give them a plus on this shipment--they did NOT blow it.

I had placed my first online plant order ever this past season with Michigan Bulb. I expected plant sizes like I had found in local nurseries. I have to admit I was surprised with the small plant size, but they were healthy and remained alive without much effort on my part. One of the plants didn't survive, but Michigan Bulb quickly refunded my money back without a hassle. I just made a QUICK phone call. For the low prices and lifetime guarantee you can't beat it. I was able to beautify my yard for a relatively low cost. Yes, the plants arrive small, but that allows there roots to settle in. I look forward to seeing how they overwintered. I should be in for a beautiful flower show this year if they make it. I'm not too worried though, since there is that lifetime guarantee. I was so pleased with their products and great customer service that I placed a second order for this spring.

Last fall I had received my first order from Michigan Bulb. I was so please with the hardy plants and great service that I placed another order for this Spring. I received it a couple of weeks ago, and the plants were hardy like the first time. I planted them according to their free planting guide, and they are doing great despite the below freezing temperatures we have had here lately. I have seen lots of negative posting for this company on this site. I'm sure it's just because those that have a good experience don't take the time to tell the company. Of the thousands of orders I'm sure they get a year, I bet proportionally there are few complaints. I'm very happy with the quality of their plants, and I'm sure I'll be ordering from them season after season. Thanks Michigan Bulb (if you read this) for the great plants and selection.

I have ordered from Wayside (never again) Direct Gardening (good experience, not a big fan of bare roots. I discovered Michigan Bulb and have ordered approximately $200 worth of product. (ordered more than I could use). The plants arrived well packed and healthy. I had one problem with an order. I ordered seven rose bushes. Mostly my fault. But 2 did not survive. I called Michigan, explained that they did not survive. They asked would I like a refund or credit. I asked for a refund. It was promptly processed. No questions asked.

My first choice when ordering is Michigan, then DirectGardening. Never ever Parkseed or Wayside. If I can't find what I want from them, then I try local growers.

I have been very pleased with Michigan and recommend them to anyone.

I oredered from this company last fall and one of their sister companies as well. Everything seemed to be packaged very well ( I ordered several items including a shade garden). Everything was shipped in the time I expected and so far all items that were not under the dirt appear to have made it through the winter. So far I am happy with the company. Spring is coming so that might change but I will order again.

I just ordered from MB for spring shipment a few days ago. I ordered before I found this site, with all the negitive comments I am hoping for the best. I used to order from them years ago, plants might of been on the small side but most lived. At least it was only $42 after all the discounts. Guess I need to go get some water gel crystals so the plants I receive might have a fighting chance. I will update my rating and experience after I receive my order.

I received most of my order yesterday. Two of the hydengeras and collection of butterfly bushes are on backorder. Part of my order was 6 lilacs and though small like I expected they have multi stems and a good root system, they were even full of leaves.
I only have two I need to call about replacement, that is the pink weiglia and the raspberry hydengera. They came dryed out brittle with the soil loose in the box. I could tell they were sent growing with leaves but I think the mail tossed them around so much the packaging failed. I still don't understand why mail delivery takes a full week to go less than 200 miles

I've sat and read so many negative comments about this company that I'm a bit thrown off. I have ordered from Michigan Bulbs for many years. My very first order from them was several rose bushes and I can tell you they are the talk of the town. One of the bushes grows as tall as 10 - 11 feet and as wide as my car! (I have pics to prove it) And that's just one of them. I will admit that when I first received them, some of them didn't make it. I placed a call to MB and since it was too late in the season, they held onto my order and resent them when the weather was more appropiate.

I have had the same results with all other plants I have ordered from them. If they don't make it...they replace them, send you a certificate to replace them later, or refund you. The plants are gaurenteed for life!

I read a few comments about people complaining the plants arrive with no leaves, etc. The only thing I can see here is that you must not garden very much. Roses are shipped bare. If they aren't, they won't survive because they will go into shock. Most plants will go into shock actually. Plants are put into a dormant state just before shipping and you must follow instructions (which are always included) to bring them out of dormancy. If you don't follow the instructions then it's your own fault if it dies.

By the way - not many people know this but a few years back, the company switched hands. The previous owners weren't exactly the best when it comes to business sense. Since the change, it appears as though things have improved.

I mean geez...for not a whole lot of money you can get an entire garden that is 100% gaurenteed for life. If you aren't happy for any reason what so ever, they'll replace it! I had roses not make it through the winter 3 years in a row and every single year they replaced them.

I placed an order on September 9 of this year. It is now Nov 4 and I have yet to receive the entire order. The first partial shipment took a month. I am in Milwaukee, Zone 5A and in November, to say the least, outside conditions at this time of the year are generally not at all amenable to working outside on one's knees, planting bulbs.

To add insult to injury, the brochures that they included with the shipments include inducements to order more of the very same items that they have already failed to ship to me.
The bulbs were undersized, indeed in the case of some of the tulip bulbs, a great many were very soft to the touch.

When I have e-mailed them inquiring as to where the remainder of my order was, it took them a few days to basically give me a generic non-answer.

I would not recommend this company.

I have placed several orders with Michigan Bulb, and have been overall pretty pleased with them. In fact, I just received the majority of my fall order yesterday and everything looked REALLY good. Last spring, I did receive quite a few plants that did not live, and started to get pretty aggravated about it. But when I called for a replacement or refund, their customer service apologized and quickly sent me new plants. When something didn't live that was then out of stock, they sent me a full refund check, which was worth twice the amount if I used it towards a future purchase.

Yes, the plants are generally fairly small, but the prices are very good, especially when coupled with Michigan Bulb's $20 off coupons. Yes, sometimes the plants won't make it, but they've always been very good about replacing them for me.

The only complaint I would make would be about their shipping. I hate that it takes so long for them to ship items (and the ship dates on my account status are always changing) after I order them. They come pretty well packaged, but always spend at least a week in transit (which probably explains why many people who've posted here received such poor quality items... they can't last that long in shipment). I even used their "track shipment" link on my account and saw that several shipments sat at one of the USPS stations for FOUR days before moving!! If Michigan Bulb would mail all of the items I order together, within a week of placing the order, and use a faster method of shipping, I would be much happier.

Overall, I think they're a good deal. Especially with the LIFETIME plant guarantee. You can't beat that.

I ordered some plants at the end of July 2006. My check was deposited by them on August 2. It is now October 9 and I have received nothing from them. I have emailed their customer service and am waiting for an answer, but, living in NJ, we very well may get frost before I get the plants.
I have dealt with them in the past and have been satisfied. Hopefully, they will refund my money+the shipping.

Wow, I have to admit I was rather surprised by Michigan Bulb's low rating. I have just found this watchdog site and thought I would comment. I have ordered bulb's and perennials from Michigan Bulb for year's and am very satisfied. If an item doesn't make it, a simple phone call to them will result in a reshipment of the same product or they will give you credit. It is your choice as long as they still have the product in stock. By the way Breck's and Michigan Bulb are basically the same company. I will leave a similar comment on Breck's since I order from them as well and have had the same experience.

By the way I did read the comment from a former Michigan Bulb patron reference shipping. I concur with that comment. While I have experienced a high survival rate many times the plants were out of their containers and bruised from their travels. If Michigan Bulb could address this issue, I think they would have happier customers.

I originally posted positive feedback and I still stand by my previous comments. However one of the things I liked about Michigan Bulb is/was their lifetime plant guarantee. Over the years I probably spent over $1,000 on plants from Michigan bulb. They definitely stand starter plants that need TLC but I found that to be fun.

My problem with Michigan Bulb began when they decided to classify me as a bad account. I tried to receive credit for about $115 worth of plants that died from multiple orders over several years. With the credit I received from MB I placed my order in mid February. As watched my order continually get pushed back thru the end I June, I decided to contact customer service. When I spoke to the Service Rep she informed me that I was "Classified as a Bad Account and that was the result of my taking advantage of the replacement guarantee."

Needless to say I am done with MB and am disappointed with the superficial lifetime guarantee.

Right now my order is positive, but since only half of it has arrived, it could still change. I was very hesitant because of all the negative remarks on this site, but the prices were so low that I had to give michigan bulb a chance. I'm glad I did! My 3 coreopsis look good, even though they had a slight haircut before being shipped, and both silverlace vines are healthy and green, although it befuddles me that one is twice the size of the other. So far I am happy and, if the rest of my order comes as healthy as the first part i will order again!

The choclate chip is a bit dry, but I expect it to recover. The only dissapointment is the grasses. They are not three plants, but three plugs. I expect them to do alright, but it is cheaper to buy one plant in a regular shop and devide it by 100 yourself. Overall an ok experience. The plants were very well packed.
