Daily Pic Vol. 221

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

My orioles are feeding at the sugarwater feeders and Ignoring 2 platform jelly feeders too,but the robins and chipmunks and red squirells are going to get fat. They all love the grape jelly !!!

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

That's interesting Huggergirl, I've got to try the jelly when my Robins return in the Fall-thanks!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Wow, Duc. The B.E. are magnificient! What I thought was a Phoebe is actually an Eastern Kingbird (new to my list). :-)

Brainerd, MN

Nice eagle shot! One just flew by me but failed to pose!

I am hopeful that the next few shots are juvenile Rose-breasted Grosbeaks.

Great photos and birds Ma McGee!

Nice shots McGee!! Love the Downy!

I'm not sure that is a Grosbeak though. The beak doesn't look right.

Klamath River, CA

My wife spotted this new nest at the end of the front porch.

Nice shots today everyone...we have had storms all day as well as tornado warning. Sure cuts into my computer time!

McGee..I think your first bird is a female Red-winged Blackbird!

Klamath River, CA

I staked it out for a few minutes and this American Robin showed up with a face full of nest material.

When I backed away she went into the nest...Seems late in the year to be nesting, or is it.

Quoting:
I think this is my Parent Eastern Phoebe (who's) out hunting early this morning, but couldn't be sure. The plumage is a little different than what I've been observing them.

Lily, I think that might be an eastern kingbird. anyone else think maybe?

Ditto to dellrose on them being female Red-winged Blackbird

Not too late for a second brood. Occasionally they'll even have 3 broods with a 3rd in July/August, though that's rare.

Update from Habitat Benen

I just cannot keep up with you guys in warm weather (esp after being laid off and I'm not on the computer all day). But I have been thinking of you guys!

Cardinals had a nest on the north side of the house, little ones fledged a week or so ago.

Robins are nesting on the south side of the house. Babies hatched last week. Parents this week have taken up shooing anything under the feeder or on the patio, including birds like mourning doves and even the chipmunks. I think it is because of post-partum hormones (ba Da bum).

I hear Great Crested Flycatchers all the time, every year. Never knew what they were until one landed. This is a shot from their second known visit, before the robin shooed it away.

I'm SO happy they're visiting the yard, and that I've had at least 2 nests (first time I've had nesting; chickadees have been going in and out of birdhouse so we'll see how that goes). I've been trying to make my backyard wildlife friendly and it is finally coming together - yay!

Sorry for the long post! Just needed to share :)

Here's the Great Crested Flycatcher on the patio

Here's one of the robin parents, after a bath? and before chasing the flycatcher away

The robins have been using the deck rails a lot. To rest/look out and as a stopping point before going into the arbs to the nest (straight shot).

Congratulations evie! That's wonderful news about the Flycatchers!

Sounds like your doing a great job with your yard.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Evie, lots of TLC has been invested. Congrats. I saw the crested flycatcher here once, they must enjoy cooler climate more than my Eastern Phoebes who is still actively nesting at presence.

Yes, indeed the above is the Eastern Kingbird. I was so tickled when Resin helped I.D. the visitor. Yesterday it perched right nearby the window while it was preening, wished it didn't see me grabing the camera through the window -- it flew off.

Here I think this is the real Mccoy (Phoebe) on my persimmon tree this morning. :-)

That does look like a Phoebe. Nice Robin shot! Thanks for the ID on the female Red Wing Blackbirds. I should have known only because the males were all over the trees too.

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

Wonderful photos. Adel, you're lucky to be able to keep watch on the nest!! Hope all goes well.
Lily, Phoebe photo is really pretty. Don't you just love the fall colors on the Persimmon trees? They make really pretty background colors.

This Bullock's Oriole looked all fluffy.

I have baby Downy Woodpeckers! Parent brought them to the suet feeder today. Two of them. Cuties both.

And this little one looks like a penguin.

That straw is just covering a screw that is there to hold corn cobs. There must be suet in there from the feeder above.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Hah, Mrs_Ed, your 'baby downy' is soooo cute. Hah, is that a 'squirrel baffle' in use at the feeder? does it work effectively?

Duc, yes, I love those persimmon trees, but they don't love me back. I can't get any fruits from the tree, or rather the birds and squirrels get to them before I do. lol.

Also, I wanted some Orioles, not the cookies, but the birds that ya'll have. lol.

I think this is a Carolina wren. These are really noisy when they're conversing with one another, lol.

Thumbnail by Lily_love
Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

LL, yah, that's a baffle. It works great for keeping the squirrels from climbing the pole. HOWEVER,
then they jumped from the roof above. hee. not much I can do a bout that except set the feeder in the middle of the yard.

Marlton, NJ

Duc, excellent shot of the Oriole!

Mrs Ed, those Downy are adorable!

Hi Lily, Yes that looks like a Carolina Wren.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

I had a momma Downy Woodpecker feeding a juvie the other day too!! Not even close to as good as Mrs. Ed's pic tho.

Thanks Pelle for the Wren confirmation. I've a new one to add onto my list. An Eastern Towhee. Whom by the way was found among the Cardinals and their youngs, and the Cardinals would not have any part of it. So soon later, I found the bird on the other side of the property line (neighbor's).
