Let's See Your ARBORS and TRELLISES! Part 3

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

You better post pictures when you get back !

I just realized something... "tomorrow I leave France" ??!?!? You are in France now? What a great time to be there, temps should have cooled off and many plants should be showing off their Fall Colors! Enjoy Ireland too!

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Which part of Ireland, Ginger? I loved it there - we were in Counties Tyrone, Donegal, and Sligo, but I think most people go to the Republic.

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

The weather in France was fabulous! The weather in Ireland was great until today...But yesterday I spent ALL DAY at Powers Court Gardens. All other times I have been on a tour and only allowed 1 hour for the gardens. This time I booked a B & B 2 kilometers from there so walked over yesterday and spent the whole day. The roses were PHENOMENAL.

Sounds like heaven

Ohhh, I was at Powerscourt Gardens back at the end of June, only had one day in Dublin (before going to Germany, with stops in Switzerland, one day in Copenhagen, an evening in France and 3 days in Iceland) so we drove out in the country. Overcast that day too!

Which B&B? We had breakfast at Coolakay House B&B
I posted my trip pics in the Photos Forum, here are the Ireland ones

Didn't want to clutter this thread with links for the rest of my trip but this link should take you to them in case anyone is interested

and to stay on track, here's s trellis I spotted on a house back in May, personally, I think it's a too dark and heavy looking for this house but I am sure if something grows on it and fills in in, it will be perfect.

looks great.
Cant wait to see it covered.

I think I'd have liked a color that matched the gorgeous Spanish tile roof more.

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

I'm glad I'm not the one who has to access the clean out vent for the chimney...doesn't look like it's too easy to get to now !

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

They probably do what I did and clean ashes from the hearth and cary outside .

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Well someone was up bright and early today!

I think what JD means is the annual cleaning many people have done to their chimney and flues to remove the soot that can lead to fires where we don't want them!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Ohhh yes we do that too

Hurst, TX(Zone 7b)

Nice look with those tiles. I once considered it for my ranch style house but I was told that the weight of the tiles would be a problem in my house. Say, how often do you clean the chimneys where you guys live?

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

never thought of the weight

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

One neighbor wanted a slate roof like I had on the English Tudor home but the builder told her she'd need much stronger beams to support the weight of the slate. Same story with the Spanish tiles.

Luis - depending on how much we use the fireplace (as to frequency of cleaning) but at least every other year.

Hurst, TX(Zone 7b)

Our winter is usually so blah compared to yours that I would say the fireplace is used: "not" in most winters; maybe 5 times a years max. So cleaning the fireplace happens like every 5 years. I wonder what is "the rule" supposed to be. Hmmmm....

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

A lot depends on the type of wood that is burned and how much creosote it creates. We don't use it at all in windy weather and didn't use it once last winter.

Visited a Japanese Maple nursery today

From one Sue to another, welcome and as pirl said, what a beautiful setting. Winter hasn't even begun and I am already looking forward to spring.

Beautiful rose and arbor, cedarcottage. Thanks for sharing.... and welcome! I am wondering what type of arbor you have with your climber. Is that a wooden arbor or a PVC one? How long has it been erected? It looks so fresh and clean! Evey =)

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Welcome cedarcottage
These are really nice people on this forum

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Welcome, Sue !
Ditto to what everyone else said: Your arbor is flawless ! Beautiful !

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

everybody's New Dawn is so luscious. mine is puny at 2 yrs old and I don't know what i'm doing wrong. Maybe it needs a fancy arbor like cedarcottage's.

Madison, MS

Hi,

Thanks for the nice comments,

Blissfulgarden-The arbor is wood.

Vossner-I cut my New Dawn back when is was about two years old, I read somewhere to do this. This rose roots real easy by layering, have several more .

Nery, my New Dawn was absolutely PATHETIC at two years old and now it's a bloom machine and scrambling across the chains quite nicely. I also did like cedarcottage and pruned it severely at 2 years, as I have done with all of my climbers. New Dawn truly lives up to the old saying of "sleep, creep, leap" for roses!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

hmmm. I can whack, i can whack. Uh, ah, the chains. I can't wait to see a progress pic.

(Zone 5b)

hi I just browsed through all three threads, I'm in awe of everybody's arbors & trellises, here's my newbie attempt at roses.....my husband built the arbor for me as a mother's day gift. How long will it take for the climbing rose to look like all of yours? :)

Lovely trellis. Are all three climbing roses? Someone who is better with roses than I am (that would be anyone at all) can answer the question about growth.

(Zone 5b)

thanks Pirl, no only the one on the trellis is a climber (william baffin because I read that even I might be able to grow it haha) the others are double pink knockouts.

Baton Rouge, LA

Lynnie, there's an old saying that I'm sure you'll see all over the boards. I have found it to be true, without fail, for my roses. "First it sleeps, then it creeps, then it leaps." This is directly transferrable to the years in the ground... Year one it sleeps, year two it creeps, year three it leaps. Don't feel discouraged until the end of the third season if your baby is still just sitting there taunting you with no growth or bloom!

(Zone 5b)

two more years...I'll try to be patient BlissfulGarden! thanks!

nery lol @ ''Maybe it needs a fancy arbor like cedarcottage's.'' it will definitely need an arbor of some kind .. my new dawn has covered the arbor and then some, if it sleeps creeps leaps then im in trouble . i have a standard size arbor and i put 2, one on each side... i always think things wont grow so i put extra or put things close. i really only needed one lol . here it is in the beginning of last may .. i planted them the previous may . they were from chamblees.
