Variegated streptocarpus 'Canterbury Surprise'...a manipulated xray mutation done to seeds by a dentist.
June Flowers
Wow,GL.!! More details please.
Lynn
You uploaded your pics perfectly! Do you know the variety name of your cool green crimped edge violet?
Ibrabec, I meant to say before that is all I know. Seeds were irradiated and Canterbury Surprise came about that way.
Hi GL
The green edged lovely is Kei- Yoki it is one of my favorites , kind of hard to find I guess , don't know why , just new I guess and the other one is Two-w Marne , another of my favorites , I love the flower you posted , it is sooooooooooo gorgeous and I love variegated plants , will post another pic , not a violet or strep but variegated :) Thank you for letting me see your beautiful plant :)
Connie Lynn
Haworthia, right? Love the variegated. It grows slower than the non-variegated. I like succulents too.
Hi Again GL ,
Yes it is a Haworthia Limafolia Variegata , they grow like weeds for me , the first one I got I traded for cause the guy wanted 50.00 for and I had something he wanted so I sent him a big rooted piece of my plant for his and the one he sent me was the size of my baby fingernail and it had no roots , yikes i was so upset but I got it planted and it rooted and now I have many , here is another pic of my pot full , I can send you one if you would like :)
Connie Lynn
I tried a variegated haworthia once and it just sat there and didn't grow. Wow! yours are doing great. Do you put it outside for the summer? I'd love to try it again. Yours is so good!
HI GL ,
No I have never put them outside , they are in my windows , variegated plants burn easily but they are used to the window light even when it gets bright and hot , when you learn how they look with just the right amount of water they grow well , I think people don't water them enough , the leaves should be full and plump not concave and shriveled and if they get that way it is easy to plump them back up :) Even the seemingly all green ones I have send up variegated babies so if you get those don't get rid of them :) will show you a pic of what I mean and I would send you one if you would like :) You are so knowledgeable it is fun to see and read the things you post , I have had streps just for a year so am still learning and it is so nice to talk to people who know so much more than I do , like to suck it up like a sponge :) and I like everyone here although I am reluctant to post sometimes so I just read :) This one isn't the pic I was looking for but it shows that the mom isn't so very variegated but the baby is and it has a sister coming too :)
Connie
Well I guess I will say goodnight GL , I wish you sweet , kind dreams and a waking to a beautiful warm day , I wish I would wake to a string of rainy days , can't seem to get rain at all anymore , I have more than a thousand daylilies out side ( my sister hybridizes them ) and I pray for a drink for them every night but the rain never seems to make it's way here , the days are lovely but so very dry , will keep praying :) night GL :)
Connie Lynn :)
I love the succulent pictures ladies!! I have given most of mine up due to space problems in the winter, but I still love looking at them ^_^.
Lynn
Thanks Lynn...me too.
Viostrep..over 1000 daylilies! Oh my gosh, that is wonderful. I love them. Such a reliable plant and great looking flowers. The whole package. Does your sister live in MN? Later when they are blooming, you'll have to post pictures. Wishing you lots of rain.
To keep this a little bit on track ;-), (although I do like to zig zag) here is strep Bristol's Moon Moth.
Good Morning ladies ,
Oh GL I love the moon moth and the jade is gorgeous , I took care of one of those a time ago for a friend , he gave me a leaf to root and it did but then a cat I took care of dug it up and it was too messy to live :( and haven't seen one since but then I don't have a lot of indoor plant stores near me . GL if you give me your address I can send you a Haworthia , as you can see I have a few :) I repotted a plant yesterday cause it was popping out of it's home and when I took it out it had 7 babies on the bottom pushing it's mom out , talk about being evicted from your home :) but I am always glad to have more babies of this plant but really if you would like one I can send one :)
Yes my sister lives a few miles from me and hybridizes daylilies by the hundreds and has passed tons of them on to me and the last three years the rain just doesn't come and I am afraid to water much as I have a well and worry about it going dry with the drought we have been having for so many years , we went through having to drill a new well once already and washing dishes outside isn't that much fun .
Posting pics is fun , I love to see the ones from all of you and I like to let you see mine , kind of like window shopping , seeing something you might want and I do like to share :) here is my Serendipity and Rainbows End flowers :)
Connie
I like your pics too viostrep! ^_^ Serendipity is a beauty!
Thank you Lynn ,
I like posting pics although I am not good with cameras , yes Serendipity is one of my favorites but then I am so in love with streps , they are so breathtaking , do you have a lot of them too or do you have tons of violets like I do , hahahaha too many but I have had plants all my adult life and I am not sure if I would get along without them , they are relaxing to putts with and it is so exciting when they bloom , wow I sound like I haven't had much to be excited about but I really do love my plants and I like to share and give some smiles to other people too and everyone here is so nice and giving with help they offer each other and sending plants and leaves to each other , Jim sent me so many strep leaves it took me all day to plant them all , I sent him things too but couldn't come close to all he sent me , I guess cause he has so many and I have just started this year to get streps , just had 2 before this year but when I saw them bloom I had to get more , I had heard of streps but thought they were the hothouse plant you get in a basket in the hospital and lives for a week when you get it home and then it is compost :) wow was I wrong and now soooooooooooooo hooked :) I so like you all and thank you for commenting on my pics Lynn : ) here is Water Dancer , so pretty . sorry kind of blurry .
hugs Connie Lynn
V..if you want some cuttings of the jade HS, I'd be happy to send you some.
Your photos are very nice and the plants are just beautiful. Nice to see Serendipity growing in someones collection. Up till now, it's one I have seen on the internet only.
Last night I spent dividing streps. Some I did in two and on one plant Marna, I got five out of one!
The photo shows one having been divided. I still had to trim the leaves and do more general grooming before I called it done.
Hi GL ,
I was writing and lost my post so starting over , tried to get it back but it didn't work .........................anyway I said .........You are so wonderful with your plants , I have just one plant that is big enough to divide but I am afraid to try so I just put her in a bigger pot hahaha I call her Tar Jar's sister as she was in the same pot with him as babies ( I won him on ebay ) but she is not a fantasy girl , just a dark lovely pink with wine colored veins , will post a pic of her if I have it on this pc , anyway she is very big and gorgeous so I am afraid to cut her up and also I have been so busy taking care of all my plants that I haven't really thought about doing it since I gave her a new place to live :)
I would love some Jade cuttings and if you Dmail me your address I will send you the Haworthia and some plant starts , you seemed to like Kei - Yoki so I will send you a small plant of her , she is gorgeous , I have a few of them in zip bags hanging around the house on S hooks , I root a lot of leaves that way , they seem to root faster and they are out of the way , I have more up than down so I take advantage of it :) Thank you for the Jade offer GL :)
Do you like violets or are you a strep gourmet ? I consider myself as a plant snob or gourmet as I like the spectacular, unique , and sweet , oh I like everything :) but I am drawn to the wild and stareful plants that is why I have fallen in love with streps :)
Connie Lynn
Gosh, I don't know how to answer. I know what I like and that includes many varieties of plants. I certainly do love streps. What a luscious one you posted!
When you root violet leaves in baggies, do you put soil mix in and then the leaf...seal and hang?
I can see it now . . . snack baggies full of AV & Strep leaves hanging from the ceiling . . . in the hall, both bathrooms, living room, kitchen . . . That would definitely help me on shelf space! DH would probably freak, though. ^_^
Double the Fun reminds me of strep Jacko's Gem. Is it a micro mini? Pretty Strep. Connie Lynn--Water Dancer is lovely. Think of learning what's out there as Window shopping. Go to all the websites you can find and study them. also look at what all the vendors are offering--on websites and on ebay. Eventually you will get to know them well. Belonging to several online groups and forums will be your very best resource. And for God's sakes....Don't mail anything to Jim for identification! ;-))
Bonnie--how'd you upload all those pics so fast! It takes forever for me to post a pic on this site!
Hi Nicole and GL ,
Ya it does help with shelf space I just hang them on the shelf or hanging baskets , plant holders , whatever is up gets a zip bag to hang out with , it is what the phrase just hanging out refers to :) I label the bags , put soil about a 1/3 rd of the way and wet it ahead of time and squeeze out any excess after it sits for a while so the wet is even , then I squeeze out any excess , hold the bag in my palm while I place the leaves in , put some air in make a hole under the zip part so it doesn't tear and then use an S hook to hang it , after the leaves get rooted ( which you can see ) I open the bags so when the babiesstart to come or if it looks too wet , I water as needed and when the babies come they have room and as soon as I want to I pot them up and wala they are ready for whatever I want to do with them , they seem to root faster in bags not sure why but they do and then I use my up places and I can root more , I have a couple of pics so will post them , may not show too well but I am sure you get the idea , I do use rooting powder , some people say it takes longer to get babies cause the leaf is making more roots but I haven't found this to be true , if anything the leaves do better just because they have a good root system and the babies are strong , but this is just what I think :) My mix is the same in the bags as I use to root in pots , soil , vermiculite , and pearlite , I know different mixes work better for different people :) will look for a pic .
Connie Lynn
Bonnie I love your double the fun sinningia , it does remind me of Jaco's Gem although I have only seen pics of it and your little sister , just darling , you must be proud , I have never hybridized anything but hope to , do you treat Sinningias the same way as you do violets or do they like to dry out some between waterings like streps ? They are a sweet looking plants :) Jim kindly sent me a big bunch of strep leaves and I sent him some things that I had and thought he might like , he was so nice to a stranger who now thinks of him as a friend :)
Connie Lynn
i
Connie;
Jim is one of the nicest men you will ever get to know, so good hearted,a real gem, one of my best buddies. Sinningia;s are really easy to grow, they pretty much like the same conditions as the violets, some require a little more humidity, but most don't. they are my favorites. here is a micro sinnigia.this is little woodnymph,a real cutie. i can download pictures really quick,my friend said something about your camera, he set something on my camera so it's pretty quick, just don't remember what he did.when i see him i will ask,
bonnie
Just lovely Bonnie , do you grow them from leaves , cutting or just from seed ? don't know much about them but I do know they are darlings :)
Connie
Connie,I love your pictures!! You have lovely plants. That's also a very interesting way to root AVs.
Bonnie,Your Sinns. are gorgeous!! (and I think we all now what a special person Jim is ^_^).
Jan,love your Jaco's Gem and your Concinna.I think I have it,but it hasn't bloomed yet.
