Japanese Maple Seeds

Walterville, OR

Hi All,

We have a smaller Japanese Maple tree. I searched online to see if I could find the name and it looks similar to a Inaba Shidare. It just started dropping seeds which I've never seen before but we have only lived here a few years - maybe I missed it. I was excited to see that one has taken root but wonder if I can do something with all the seeds. I put some in dirt and a few in water (have no idea what to do!). I would love to raise a few of these from seeds. Is it possible for a newbie like me?

Also, I broke off a branch yesterday and wondered if it was possible to get a cutting or is it too late for something already off the tree?

Thanks in advance!

You can definitely grow them from seed, but the babies won't necessarily look like the parent so if you want trees that look exactly like the original that's not the way to go. Here is a link that has some info on how to start them from seed http://www.freeplants.com/japanese_red_maple_trees.htm

I'm not sure about cuttings--many JM's are done by grafting instead, I'm not sure if that's because many of the hybrids have poor root systems or if it's because they're hard to do from cuttings. I'm not sure if you could still do it after it's been off the tree for a while (or if this is even the best time of year to try cuttings from them) but if you've already got the branch you have nothing to lose but some time if you want to try some cuttings from it.

Thanks so much!

I've got several JM cuttings sitting in rooting mix on the deck. I haven't checked for roots yet (about 1 week) but eventually I'll know whether or not it works, and if I remember to look up this thread, I'll update.
