I had purchased some crowns, and planted them a little while back. 2 of them, i planted in some untreated dirt, off to the side, only because i didn't have room for them in my bed, and didn't want to throw them away. Go figure, they were the first to sprout.
This one here, tho...looked like a baby asparagus a week ago. It has since "ferned out"...is this normal for the first year of sprouting? And should it look like an asparagus that you would eat for such a short time? It only looked like an asparagus for a week or so, now it looks like this.
sorry the pic is blurry, but i think you still get the idea.
Baby Asparagus
That is exactly what happened with ours. This is the first year planted. Very few sprouts appeared and they ferned fairly quickly. The roots needs the ferns the first year to grow and store energy.
You can't wait when it comes to picking asparagus. It sprouts into fern in just a day or so.
Except, of course, when it is newly planted and then you have to wait a couple of years.
Hey fodder....
Did you test the PH of your asparagus plot - ?? -- just wondering because I'm setting up MY asparagus plot right now and understood that asparagus need a high PH -- 7 - 7.5 ...but I'm about to just put them in the ground regardless of the PH because I've had these crowns for about 3wks now and they REALLY need to get planted.
Thanks for the replies, folks!
So this is a normal thing, ok. They will still fern quickly when they are mature plants (after 3 years), is that what you're saying?
And...Is it normal the first year to get one sprout per crown? I was under the impression each crown would get a few or several sprouts, even.
And, no, sorry...i did not test the ph. i'm still a noob gardener. This is my 3rd season of doing a vegetable garden (i dont know anything about flowers). Altho i have enlarged my gardening space, and am trying a few new things, and started most of my plants from seed this year for the first time...
I haven't gotten too heavy into the science of it, and testing ph yet. We'll see what future seasons bring.
Thanks again for the info folks!
It is likely that the crowns will throw up a few more stalks yet this year.
