Beginner Gardening: Baby Asparagus, 1 by fodder

This one here, tho...looked like a baby asparagus a week ago. It has since "ferned out"...is this normal for the first year of sprouting? And should it look like an asparagus that you would eat for such a short time? It only looked like an asparagus for a week or so, now it looks like this.
