Round Robin???

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

I think we have enough participants to start the first AV&G forum Round Robin!

These are the great guidelines another group moderator came up with:

It is important that each participant take out what they want to keep, toss what is iffy, add to the box and mail it ASAP. This is what will make it go smoothly.

Everyone pays the postage to get the box Priority with tracking information to the
next person on the list.

The box will be started with leaves, starters, and whatever else can be thrown
in. When you receive the box and there are dead leaves, etc., please throw them
out and replace what you can. Please keep the names and address list with the
box for the next person. You are welcome to place anything in the box, just
remember you need to replace what you take. You are also welcome to throw in
extras. But please don't throw in your old leaves, make sure what you are
sending is viable plant material for propagation.

You are not obligated to take anything you don't want, so if something doesn't
suit your fancy, send it out to the next recipient on the list.

Once you have made your selection, post to the group what you have taken and
when you sent the box out to the next recipient. Including a tracking number is
helpful.

DO NOT POST TO THE GROUP WHAT IS IN THE BOX, only what you kept.

This sounds like fun!! It's sort of like a seed box, you put in what you take out...right?

Medford, NJ

i have done this with other types of plants, always fun, and I have some great plants from doing it. However, I don't have many violets to share, most of my big ones are NOID. Maybe next year!

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

I just participated in a RR in another forum for AVs and in another forum for hoya cuttings. It's lots of fun, and a great way to increase your collection. I'm ready for another RR. Count me in.

meag848 - that's exactly what it is I wasn't sure if one had been done in this forum . . . and it's almost too early for another Bingo . . . this would be a good pre-summer-heat activity! Since it is a holiday weekend, we'll keep the interest going through next week, and maybe get it started by next weekend?

Monticello, MN

Hi Everybody ,

I have never been involved in a RR but think it would be fun , I have a lot of violets and a lot of streps but the streps are small as I have gotten all but three in just the last 3 months so would only be able to add just a few leaves but I have some Hoyas and Chiritas so I think I could add enough to the box , I also wanted to add that if there are limp leaves one could revive them by soaking them in water for a few hours and then dry them and add them back to the box , also Jim told me you can put them in the fridge for a while to firm them up and I have tried that and it works well :) so if you decide to do this I too would like to join in :)

I read this post last night and decided to think about it before I replied. I can see it could be a lot of fun, but also plants are not going to like traveling that much, the ones that don't get picked first. Refreshing is a good idea. But I was thinking if there were a lot of people that wanted to participate, names could be broken down to groups and there could be two (or three boxes) going...maybe everyone would not have to wait as long to get the box and the plants would be fresher? I don't know. I will be in Maryland the first two weeks in June and then I will be in the DC area for the gessie convention for about 1 1/2 - 2 weeks end of June, early July. So I guess I'll have to pass this time anyway. Too bad, sounds like fun.

If there is enough interest, then we could definitely have a RR1 and a RR2 - grouped by region. Or, if people are hesitant to participate (or unable to participate due to travel) - we could do a small one now, and have another RR in the fall.

Why is it "too early" for another Bingo? Just wondering...

Monticello, MN

I haven't done the Bingo , don't know where , when or how ........I know how reg bingo works but never liked the places , went once to meet someone that was there and met some really weird people ,they had a stack of over 100 cards and wouldn't give me 3 cause they were going to play them ........nope no bingo places for me , anyway whatever you decide :)

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

I suppose it's not too early for Bingo . . . I guess I had it in my head that every 6 months or so was good, that's all.

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

A lot of forums run Bingo monthly, so I wondered why it was too soon for Dave's--thought maybe there was a rule...

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

No rule that I know of.

I guess I should have been more specific - I figured I would host bingo 2x a year. 'Course I would love to play if others hosted! ^_^

Can someone tell me about shipping leaves for other gesneriads beside AVs. I see how AVs are shipped with the stem but do you try to include the stem on others such as streps, etc. Will they do as well as AV leaves in those little plastic bags?

Pat

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Pat - I just recently received a box that had AV, strep (some whole leaves, some sectioned leaves), and chirita leaves all sent in their own baggies. All of them made it just fine.

Nichole
^_^

MSU, MS(Zone 8a)

Thanks Nicole,

I didn't want to send something that turned into mush.

Pat

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Nichole,
You mentioned Chirita leaves.I have one that has been rooted for ages and looks perfect. How long do they take to make a baby?

Lynn

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Lynn - I have absolutely NO idea! The only chirita I've had before these leaves I received as a baby plant. I've read that they're easy to start from leaf, though. Maybe you could treat it as you would a rooted AV leaf - cut the mother leaf in half to encourage baby growth.

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Good Idea,Thanks.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I should have cut some of mine off, but I didn't. It takes just about as long to get babies as it would on a stuck AV leaf, Lynn......I just potted some up grown from a leaf...........let me get the camera.

They are so much fun to start from leaf. I let them get real nice and big before I separate. These have been separated just a week. The only good part about only taking some of the top of the leaf off is........I stuck them again.......(the mother leaves of the two kinds of chiritas)

Thumbnail by gessiegail
MSU, MS(Zone 8a)

Oh, those look soooo nice! The silver on the leaves is so pretty.

I guess that is the capillary matting I have heard about. If you use that in the bottom you don't need pebbles, right. You just "wick" them? I'm so ignirint:)

Pat

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I just have an old cheap blanket cut up and use for capillary matting. I won't wick once they get started.............when I put them in a bigger pot, they will just get watered when I water them, but they are domed right now with air vents on the top open.

MSU, MS(Zone 8a)

So if you have them in humidity trays (after they are started with no domes) do you just pour water in there on the mat and let the water soak up from the bottom. My trays will be here this week so I am looking for the cheapest/best way to use them.

Thank you!

Pat

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Here's a picture of mine.It is C. Sinensis. The leaf has been rooted for a long time. The leaf is thicker than most Chiritas.Should I cut it?

Thumbnail by lbrabec
Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I always dome my leaves that are stuck just like Lynn is showing.............I root my chiritas in 1/2perlite and 1/2 vermiculite just like av leaves. I leave the domes on until they get very rooted.....then I might turn the dome slightly off kilter for a little air.........but not much until they are ready to be separated.

Do you dome your leaves, Lynn?
Also......IMHO, you can leave it or you can just cut the top 1/3 off, Lynn........

Monticello, MN

Good Evening Everyone ,

I was wondering if we should post here when we get the box and then let the next person know when the box will be shipped to them so they will know it is coming ? .............. is that how you do it so everyone knows the way of it's travels ? Just looking for thoughts on how this is done , I have shipped plants but never in a RR manner . I already have my plastic bags labeled so I remember what I am sending and won't delay shipping :)

Thank you for the input :) This will be fun :)

Connie Lynn

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Oh, we will. We'll post the tracking info, etc. I'm just waiting on one address, then I'll get the box off! ^_^
