Please join me and post your epis in bloom!
This is a NOID that always blooms. I call it "Hot Pink."
Spring Epis
Nothing here. I think the cold winter set mine back. Many lose at least 2 from side effects of this winter. Hope by next winter I can figure out how to keep the epi house warm enough.
sandy
Hi sandy! Mine are inside all winter (minimum 55 degrees). I water once a month till it gets warmer. Then I water some every week. I had 2 buds I've never seen blast and fall off this week. Hate that! Looks like at least 2 more will flower but who knows. I have a ton more that are growing lots this spring without blooms. I've started pushing flower fertilizer the last 2 weeks. I can't use fish emulsion cause it would smell up the place!
Very pretty!!! I have Ackermanii in bloom but my camera is broke so I can't post a photo.
Grace Ann is budding up for the first time & NOID is bidding up.
I hope I get my camera back by then.
Yes I held off on water during the winter. But My epies are all out side in the epi house which was wrapped in plastic. Normally that would have been enough but this last winter was really bad. We usually only have 2-4 freezes the whole winter and they usually only last a few hours. This winter it dropped down to freezing almost every week and some times twice a week and stayed down there.
There was freeze damage all the way down to the lower part of the state.
I am getting great growth and only a couple of the newer cuttings where hurt. I will try to remember not to buy cuttings late in the season.
I did have a Easter Cactus bloom-do want to get more of them. LOL
Sandy the epi nut.
Oo! Like those blooms are they small??
The EC are small and the NOID pink was is classed as small about 4 inches across, but it was loaded, it did loss a lot of buds when I brought it home but it put out more buds.
Sandy
Love smaller blooms and species. :))
Well after the wrens(bird ones) finish using it as their nesting site-I will be repotting it and I am sure there will be broken off pieces so I will let everyone know. Will be about a month or so. I am hoping to be able to take picture of them as they raise their babies-just hope this is not a false nest, they are known for doing that. LOL
Sandy
Are they carolina wrens? We have house wrens and lots of them nest in all the birdhouses I have around.
BTW, I'd love a cutting!
They Are Carolina wrens. Bold little devils. I need to order some meal worms for them.
I will let everyone know when I repot it. The leave/stems are so long that I know there will be breakage when I try to repot it.

Boojum: That Hot Pink Epi is Gorgeous! And, I like that German Empress too! Both are Lovely!
I want to know how to get them to bloom!! Maybe I don't fertilize often enough. I don't have many Epi's ... one large E. hookeri that I finally saw the blooms last year for the first time in 30 years! Gee ... I sure missed a lot not realizing they were night bloomers! I've been waiting and waiting for my E. oxypetalum to bloom, I've had it for a few years but it just really started putting on a lot of growth a year ago and no sign of buds yet, but I have hopes! I have a few noids but they are still immature, someday I hope to see buds and blooms on those too. My Ric Rac is big but no blooms this year, yet. I watching that one closely after missing it last year, thinking it was sick and finding out from you folks here that it's a night bloomer and what I was seeing was a spent bloom.
Sandy, I love that Easter Cactus bloom ... so pretty! I would love to have one Epi of each color out there, LOL. But, alas ... there can only be one Epi Nut and you own that title! ^_^ How many do you have now? We did have a cold winter here in Florida, didn't we? I've been here for 42 years and can't remember it getting that cold in a long, long time. We had not had a freeze in years and had two here in Daytona Beach this past winter. Usually when we have a cold night, as soon as the sun rises it begins to warm up but we had some days that stayed in the 40's and a few nights of mid 20's. I was telling my husband I wanted to move farther south! I don't have a greenhouse and moved my hoyas and orchids inside but everything else got shoved into the unheated Florida room and up against the south side of the house and covered with blankets. I did lose quite a few plants because of the cold ... sure hope we don't have weather like again that for a long time but I can't complain too much, at least we don't have the snow and ice!
Oh, I hope you do get pictures of the Wrens! I have two Purple Martin houses ( those condo type with eight or so nesting spaces in each and they are full of nests but I'm sure they are all false nests as I've not seen any sign of bird activity anywhere around them. Wrens are known to build lots of false nests. We used to have a wren pair build a nest in a hanging plant on the front porch every year but this year there wasn't a plant hanging in the spot until recently so missed them raising their babies this year.
Lin I am up to 224 now but a couple are not doing good. I just started the summer feeding in March so it might be to early or it might just a side effect of the cold or that most are still to young. But other than a LOT of new growth I have only had a couple of buds on cuttings, that where not big enough. I am just now getting into really taking care of them better, will DD was ill they did not always get the right care.
You could get one of each color of Easter cactus I think there are around 14 of them and then there are the sun cactus.. Mine came into bloom very easy.
Sandy the epi nut.
I have a couple that look "fried". I am pampering those 2. The only thing I have with buds on it right now is an Easter Cactus. Non of my epies are budding. Oh well, maybe it is time for more food.
Linda
I am hoping that mine will bud up later in the summer. If I remember right from when I grow them years ago they did bloom later in the summer, I know that my epi oxy does.
Epiphyllum strictum is budding up.
Make sure you check at night It might be a night bloomer. Looks like it will be yellow. I love the yellow ones.
Sandy
Oooh, it does look like it might be a yellow bloom! Please check at night ... I've missed mine many times not realizing they were night bloomers! I bet that's going to be a beauty ... can't wait to see a picture of the opened bloom!
WOW, WOW, WOW! That is beautiful! Congratulations!
That is Beautiful!!!!!
I get a white Sunrise cactus this morning. Told mom it was her Mother's day plant until it quits blooming and then it is mine. LOL Will take picture when it opens.
Sandy
Thank you, kindly! ^_^
Feuerzauber is amazing! I checked twice on my yellow last night. It's still not open. And it keeps growing. It is HUGE!! Maybe it will be my Mother's Day present.
Could be that would be nice. How long is the bud?
Sandy
Aha, if it's growing like that I bet it will grace you for Mother's Day! I know it's going to be gorgeous, but can't wait to see it!
Just the bud alone is 6" and 1.5" wide.
Sounds like the bloom is going to be open soon ... check it about 11 O'clock or so tonight and see if there's any progress!
Right-o!
I finally got my first epi a few weeks ago--anxiously awaiting that bud to bloom.....be back at 11!
Darn!
I am no expert but if that picture was taken last night, I would say that it might be a day or two more to go. But I would keep checking on it.. The outer petals will loosen up some at first. If I remember correctly it has been a few years and a few bangs on the old head sense I previously grow them and I am relearning every thing about epis.
Sandy
looks like a nice one, Boojum. My Jerry's Jubilee is about to burst forth. I am hoping today, but thinking it might be tomorrow, or the next evening (Tuesday).
Of course, I cannot wait to show it off to y'all!!!
Can't wait to see both blooms!!
Well it's getting fatter so you are prolly right Sandy!! When this one opens I plan on taking many many pics!! I still have to ID it!
I am waiting for them to bloom too. I have no blooms this year so I will enjoy all of yours.
