Spring Peeking Vol 3

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Years ago we could ride our horses in the woods behind us and there were several different paths we could take. A couple of them lead down to the creek in different places. One took you down a pretty steep trail and when you got to the bottom there was this beautiful spot filled with VA Blue Bells in the spring. What fun it was riding along the path with flowers everywhere.

Well, it really does like to grow along creeks and I am not sure of the reason, but I believe moisture and humidity have something to do with it.

Buttoneer, maybe it's that they also like the low sections of ground with bad drainage. I have some spots in my beds where the water pools before disapating, also some spots that catch the water as it runs off of the house and through the grass. I don't build these sections up, because I like to have some damp shady spots for some of the wonderful plants that like those conditions.
Can't seem to get any of the Dutchman's Breeches to take though. Either the voles are eating the corms or the conditions are not right. I've tried 3 years in a row in 2 different spots.

Mine are the same place I tried to grow the Va. Bluebelles. They are doing fine. Go figure.

Those red and white tulips are stunning! I took some more photos today. I am THRILLED to report the jack in the pulpit Jody gave me at the swap last year is doing just fine and blooming.

And the solomon's seal from Critter? Holly? I do apologize that my feeble brain can't remember.

Irises are blooming! All the labels got stomped by the dogs from across the road so I don't know what's what. Hopefully I can sort them out this summer.

These are on the other side of the bed. Don't think they're the same variety but I'm not sure.

I don't know how I managed that. Try again.

This is the euphorbia a couple of you got from me at the swap last year. I don't know the variety - I received it in a trade. It's blooming pretty.

Do those blossoms on the flowering almond have a scent?

Jen, sadly they don't, it would be wonderful if the smelled like Almond extract. LOL, I would not get a thing done outside sniffing the air. (Picture the fabrezz commercial)

How cool would that be?

Va_W_Rose, Your mom's tulips are lovely.

These NOID Daffs were sold to me by an older gent on ebay. His deceased wife had planted them 50 years ago. I bought 100 of them. A nice late bloomer. Heuchera Mocha below.

Hart, Those Iris are gorgeous!

This sweet daff is actually Elizabeth Ann. The ones I thought were her before turned out to be Salome. Another later daff. Both of these daffs are cyclamenus? Did I spell that right?

Lady, That's a pretty little primrose.

This NOID Hyacinth is over 24" tall (if it would stand up). The blooming section is 11".

I never purchased any orange tulips. They mysteriously appeared and I love the yellow edges!

This photo was taken 2 weeks ago. There were supposed to be alternating groups of a pale tangerine colored Hyacinth called Gipsy Queen in between the Jan Boss Hyacinths. Out of a bag of 50 bulbs, not cheap ones, only 2 formed stalks. The rest stayed on the ground and you could see the flower, but it would not rise.

Do you think I got carried away with these King Alfred Daffs???? I've divided them twice already. They are 24" tall & stand straight up. I want to add the Siberian Beauty Blue squill behind the golden crocus and find some other Hyacinth to use. Any suggestions?

This is the same bed today. Of course right in front, one of the Iberis didn't overwinter. I'm getting ready to put down that rubber mulch stripping right in front of the edging. This grass is so aggresive about jumping into the beds.

Hart, That solomon's seal didn't come from me. Beautiful pictures.
Stormyla, That Dicentra "Gold Heart" is just beautiful.
Every day I go out and find some new bulb putting on it's show.
Those white edged Esperanto have opened up and are just as beautiful as I thought they would be.

Stormy, I think a lot of places, even not so cheap places, are selling bulbs that aren't as big and so don't grow or flower as well. Might try giving those hyacinths another year and see if they don't have better stalks next year.
