Swap Chat III Ric & Holly's

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Thanks, Gita! Lots of good tips, there. Wish I'd known about pinching back the new stems... mine put up some leaf stems recently that are maybe 5 feet tall now! LOL I think I'm going to try to put a tomato cage around the stems, or something.

Gita, Leave it to you to have a plant product that includes beer! LOL I was always told if your did the moss thing in a blender, to use stale beer, I'm guessing an unpasteurized micro brew or unfiltered ale would aid the effort.
Jill, Jamie has a warm heart and loves everyone from the word "Hello". He grew up among our adult friends and considered them to be "His" friends, funny thing is, now they are. His ability for social interaction never ceases to amaze me. JR is showing some of the same qualities. Ric

OH! To die for!!!! I hope doc sees this! Yes--that is what they look like. Worth losing a night's sleep over!

Jill,
I am at a loss with mine too. Just had to re pot it as I was moving the plant. and it came out of the pot and the pot fell and broke.
I just have not had time to do all these follow-up little tricks and feedings. My downfall as a gardener......My garden would be so much better if I followed up with proper care.

Holly,
Beer has many uses other than just guzzling it.....

Try beer batter onion rings! To die for! Mix equal amts. flat beer and flour. Cover and allow to sit at room temperature at least 3 hours. Slice up those big, sweet onions and dip them into this and deep fry them. They even stay crunchy!
Drain on paper towels, sprinkle with a bit of salt (I sometimes use Old Bay instead) and serve. If you are making a big batch, keep them warm in a low oven until all are done.

Now--on the moss in the blender--I have always heard (from Allan Summers) that you blend it with buttermilk....NOT beer.

OK! Gotta get ready to go my Sunday AM "thing" at HD.

Gita, thanks again for the begonias, I love them :) and Holly, please send a big thanks to your friend for the black pussy willows. I still have them rooting a bit more -- so far, so good ^_^

I discovered a great garden spot yesterday...Meadowbrook Farm in PA http://www.meadowbrookfarm.org/aboutus/aboutus-test.html. The estate was gorgeous and used to be owned by Alice Herkness and Liddon Pennock (a very prominent florist in Phila). The Pennsylvania Horticulture Society is involved with it now. I can't wait to go again someday. We purchased a few fabulous dark chocolate plants that I've never seen in our area. And Gita, you would love it, they have a greenhouse with just begonias (and ferns).

Hmmmm......I missed reading here for a bit and am really surprised to see no activity since the 24th. Are we elsewhere talking about the swap?

I have to admit that I am a bit slow on the uptake sometimes and will probably feel pretty stupid when someone points me in the right direction. haha

What a wonderful time we all had at Holly's. We will be talking about this for quite a while. Not sure if it is age or life style, but while watching a really stupid TV show the other day showing all the twenty somethings partying the day away, I realized that it was okay for them to be doing that sort of thing, but it holds no interest anymore for me. A nice Saturday afternoon with gardening friends is so much better.

I am feeling especially thankful for Dave's Garden this morning for some reason. Can't say enough good things about it. I ought to take this opportunity to write to Administration and thank them for all that they do.

I hope that all of you great folks are doing well and enjoying the season and all that goes with it. Take care until we chat again.

Finally got around to planting the DLs you gave me, but stupid me didn't leave the labels with them when I took them out of the bags. So I'm hoping I put the right ones where I wanted, I'll find out when they bloom. At least they are easy to tranplant if I need to move them.
