Swap Chat III Ric & Holly's

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I need to cut my begonia pot back, too... was going to do so "when it stopped blooming," but first the dragon wing (green leaf, pinkish red bloom) begonia bloomed for a month or two, and then the angel wing (silver spotted leaf, pink bloom) started! There's a little dark leafed trailer in that pot also, but I don't think I've ever seen it bloom. If I take cuttings now, they should be rooted and ready to pot up by swap day.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

Holly I will swap you some of my coleus for some of yours!!!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Woo Hoo, Wind, thanks so much.
Wow, Gita, those begonias really bounced back

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

wind- you drill 2 small holes in the top of the gourd and string a wire thru. The gourd walls (shell) can be quite hard, like a wood shell, and almost a quarter inch thick. I'll dig up the instruction sheet I got.

West Pottsgrove, PA(Zone 6b)

Critterologist, the reason you have mimosa seedlings coming up "like weeds" is ... it's an invasive species!

I have cherry seedlings coming up even thicker... :-)

DH has a major attachment to this tree. It's staying. I've got a fruit picking pole now, so I'm going to try to knock down the pods this year, before they get a chance to blow around.

West Pottsgrove, PA(Zone 6b)

Your cherries are native, and aren't causing ecological damage.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

just backyard trauma

;)

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Critter, I would love a Mimosia but I have no where to put one. One of my favorite memories was of a large Mimosia covered with Butterflies.
Yes, you are right I do get a lot of enjoyment from my birds but you can't tell me that when I'm cleaning bird dodo off the edges of my swimming pool. Yuck!
Claypa, You are right they are invasive, we have a neighbor that has one and I quite often find seedlings in our yard that need to be pulled.
Onewish, sounds like a swap to me. LadyG is bringing me some Alabama Sunset, not sure if I have any of those in my mix, but I expect she will be picking over the Coleus, too.
FlowerJen, Think it was you that asked about the Ornamental Plums, I don't notice any scent but I don't have a real good sense of smell.

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

If anyone would like hosta, I am about to split 3 and have no room for them here.

I think that one might be fire and ice, but I am not sure of the others. They are white and green.. Maybe the orange marmalade is ready to split also. Not sure.

PLEASE D MAIL ME IF YOU WANT ONE. I can keep track better. I don't always see everything on all of Holly's swap threads when I am busy.

Thanks

Teri

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

I've added 3 evening primrose and 1 hops vine to my have list :) We've had picture perfect day weather-wise here today. Getting a bit warm too.

Also, I may be able to split a few named dahlia tubers, if anyone likes dinner plate dahlias. I'll check what we have and post back before the swap. Last year I was too lazy to split them and planted the clumps as is. They were pretty, but the blooms are actually larger when the tubers get split, so if they survived winter storage, we'll divide some up and take them with us.

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

I'm getting caught up here. I updated my list on the other thread with everyone's requests and added two sedums, Angeline and Dragon's Blood. My chickens are kind enough to propagate these for me when they go scratching in the perennial beds. I also have several White Pine saplings 8-18 inches tall. I think I have some Tulip Poplar saplings, too, if anyone's interested.

Critter, I would love a mimosa seedling. Some of my fondest childhood memories involve climbing the one at my grandmother's house to pick the flowers. That one's gone now. My neighbor has a gorgeous mature one that smells so divine when it blooms, but the seeds never find their way into my yard.

West Pottsgrove, PA(Zone 6b)

That's not what you said in the ID forum last summer!

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

Well, let me put it this way, the seeds have found their way into the veggie garden, but not a single mimosa has yet survived out there. ;-) BTW, last summer's mystery seedling turned out to be Senna occidentalis

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

I added this to my have list - 3 large wire baskets lined with coconut is up for grabs!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

More mimosas may have been dug last fall than I thought (a friend wanted a bunch, and I think a few went at the swap, also)... but I think probably I'm just not seeing them yet because they haven't leafed out.

If those are both little sedums, I'd love to try some. That reminds me.. I've got one little pot and can get some layered pieces from the sedum by my mailbox... dont' know the variety, but it's bright chartreuse green, short ground cover type, gets yellow flowers, and it's tough as nails. :-)

I potted up a few Greek Oregano plants this afternoon and pulled some thyme from between the patio pavers... hopefully they'll settle into pots OK.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Critter, Re: Sedum bring it if you want I know you have a lot of other things to bring and there are a few people bringing that sedum already + I have a ton of it. Although I'm pretty sure my DIL will take just about anything left over, they have a bit over 2 areas of field to fill in.
BTW I have had great luck with the pepper seeds you gave me, I will have a few of those to hand out but most of them are already spoken for.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Little peppers looking good!

I'll skip the sedum, then... sounds like you know the one I'm talking about! Once you've got it, you end up with a ton of it, as you said... but that's perfect for inferno strip type spots (like my mailbox)

Would your DIL like some obedient plant? I think I've already got her down for Black-eyed Susans...

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Jill,

At the HD--they have all these veggies by "Bonnie"....They are under the green canopies marked with "ECO--something"....NOT part of the Bell Nursery stuff...and come in 4" and 5" degradable pots for $3.48. They have piles of Greek Oregano... I bought two.

Also a question-----They have "Lettuce leaf Basil"--which to me looks just like your Italian Basil--the crinkled leaves and smell and all.....Do you know if it is the same thing as your Genovese Basil?????

Thanks, Gita

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I haven't found any other basil here that tastes quite the same as the one from Italy that I have. I've grown a "lettuce leaf" variety, and the flavor was far milder.

We're very picky about our Greek Oregano, LOL... we like the really strong, spicy ones. That's why I propagate them by division and not from seed. I'm guessing the Bonnie ones are seed-grown. Feel free to pinch off a bit from one of mine and smell/taste to see if you like it.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Oh, and speaking of oregano... a couple of years ago, at Hart's swap I think, I gave away some divisions of Greek Mountain Oregano (slightly different flavor, leaves are a little more narrow and more silvery than the other one)... I've since lost that plant, so if anybody has it I'd love a piece!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

What I need to do is take my camera to work with me and take pictures of all these plants so i can post them for comparison.

I bought 2 of the Greek oreganos--one for me--and one for my SIL who is the cook in the family. The leaves on this one are fairly small and oval......seems a low-growing type.....

I have to go out and take a picture---Hold on!

On the tag it says:
Greek Oregano
Origanum vulgare...subsp. hirtum

Thumbnail by Gitagal
Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I've had two greek oegano's- I think there's a name problem there. Gita, yours looks like my current one, nice, hardy, white blooms in summer but loses lots of leaves (All?) in winter and I trim off dry stems. then flush new spring growth and spreads. Previously I had a more upright, smaller, narrower leafed slightly silvery one Maybe not quite as hardy, lost it. and haven't seen it. in stores.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Sally, that sounds (the silvery one) like the "Greek Mountain Oregano" that I lost, also.

They're all Greek Oreganos, but as with Rosemary, there are seed-grown ones and then there are named cultivars that are vegetatively propagated. You just have to find one whose flavor suits you. :-)

Odenton, MD(Zone 7b)

May I make a few requests: HollyAnns I would like an ornamental plum if you have one available
Critterologist- I'd like to try an obedient plant
Sallyg- put my name on a dogwood if they're not already taken
Gitagal- an Angel wing begonia please

Thanks, I'm so looking forward to the 16th!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Would anybody like to adopt a beautiful betta (fish)? He's blue with a little red in his very showy fins. He comes with bowl, food, and water conditioner. He was Blake's fish, and Eliot has decided he doesn't want to follow Blake's example after all about drinking out of the fish bowl. As a result, poor "Mo" betta needs a new home where he'll be more appreciated! He'd be great for an office desk. :-)

He's also be a good "kid" fish (bettas are really tough).

He can be picked up here, or he can travel to Holly's with no trouble in a tupperware container (I've moved bettas cross-country that way!).

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

Critter - I'd be happy to give "Mo" betta a new home, I have the perfect space for him & I'm sure Thor would love to have something else he could stalk ^_^

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Yippee! That will work out fine. Thanks, Becky! We're looking at possibilities for a new kitten, so I think it'll be better to have "Mo" gone from his perch on the hearth. :-)

He seems happy & healthy... this week, he's been building a huge bubble nest. Don't know where he thinks he's gonna cruise chicks! LOL

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

Nookitty! How cool is that! Mo-Betta will have a good life with us! I told Thor and he was positively giddy at the thought of something else to stalk!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Dog wood for Catbird..LOL I'll see what size I have

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Nothing definite yet... but we're keeping an eye out and also considering a Bengal kitten... they tend to love playing in water (how un-catlike!), so Mo's days would really be numbered in that case. Thor will like him... those flowing fins make him extra good as kitty TV. Let me know if you want his 2 gallon goldfish bowl or if you'd rather have a "betta vase" (have one in the basement, I think... the kind people stick a plant in the top of). I also have a 1 gallon bowl -- he'd get used to smaller quarters. Whatever works best for you -- and thanks!

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

Hmmm, if it's not too much bother I'm thinking the gallon one ^_^ (we're meeting on Saturday right?)

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I have a buch of WS'ed babies .... I am sure I won't need 50 of each plant... let me know if someone wants any of them potted up and brought to the swap... you can see the ones that I have tons of ... those are up for grabs

http://picasaweb.google.com/AllisonNJ71/WinterSowedSeedlings?feat=directlink

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

I'd love some - especially if they are annuals ^_^

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Sorry, Becky, but you & Chantell are on your own Saturday. I'll bring "Mo" to Holly's. :-)

Onewish, your seedlings look great! I haven't had much luck with poppies here, so I won't speak up for any. I don't know if that one container is yarrow or not... when it gets bigger, yarrow has sorta fine, ferny foliage.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

onewish--

Here are my Yarrow seedlings---SOOOO slow coming up!
The seed packet was sent to me from Latvia--so who knows how fresh it is.....

The seeds are supposed to be all different colors of yarrow.....Well--ONLY 3 seeds have come up! I'll have to wait and see what I get....

How does this compare to yours? I KNOW these are yarrow!

Thumbnail by Gitagal
Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I almost want to start a new Thread in Seed Growing.....Can't believe how slow everything has been this Spring!!!! What gives??????

Have any of you also experienced this phenomena???
Last year--My tomatoes were already in the beds by the 3rd week of April--12" tall! Here are mine this year--sowed 3/23.....Only the Mortgage Lifter has been big enough, already, to transplant in 4" pots...

Thumbnail by Gitagal
Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Also--my Datura seedlings are barely growing their true leaves by now!
I know last year was a lot sooner!

Either way--as of today--ALL my seedling flats are outside! Let them deal with whatever comes! DONE with the lights and the fans and all that inside!
--Have them in filtered light!
--My Angel Wing Begonias cuttings will be sitting in my front steps--NO sun to speak of!
--My 2 HUGE, dormant Brugmansias ("Maya" and "Rose Souvelons") got dragged out today. The R.S. leaves greened up just in a couple of hours. I know they will do this--
never even blink! The Maya is really big--(remember the carnage pictures???).....put her on my front steps in total, bright shade.....I think i will cut another chunk off of it soon.....

Here are the Daturas.....still SOOOO small! My Mgr. at work keeps bugging me--"When will i get my daturas"???? I keep telling him--"They are only 1"+ tall!

Thumbnail by Gitagal
Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

And--Jill--Here is the Greek Oregano HD has oodles of! Says it will grow to 24" high.....
Look under the green canopy that says "Eco"----whatever......the herbs and veggies by "Bonnie"....

I bought 2--not that I am a great Oregano user----Potted one up for my daughter and SIL...He's the cook!

Thumbnail by Gitagal
Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

And, lastly--Just for you, BEC!

Here is my Lilac bush just starting to open up the blooms!!!!
Hope yours is doing just as well!

You mentioned in a Post that yours were still in a pot--WELL! The one I gave you had been living in a 10" black pot for 4 years--many times blown over on it's side and seldom watered......No direct sun!

I am SO happy for you that yours is doing so great!!!!
