Hummingbird Adventures #6
Oh, BB it is, good name for that little bully! I've been just sitting outside watching the shenanigans! What a great day to do yardwork and watch orioles, jays and hummers! (without camera of course!)
You got some GREAT shots today! Wonder if Trickster might be a black-chinned....
Hey, SW, your little one with the purple looks similar to a Black-chinned hummer. Here's a couple photos to match yours with. Congratulations! I've been hoping for one sighting for a couple years and have never been lucky enough.

ima and duc,
Thanks for the links, I do believe that you are both right. I was so surprised! He's hanging around again. I think I have a female too. I'll have to check out the ladies a little closer.
I hope that you get a photo of him, duc. Now I have to find out if sometimes the blue looks purple. He is much smaller than Zoom. Who is an Anna's Hummer. I was so pleased to get several good photos of them yesterday. A blessing indeed at a time when I really needed the cheering up. ^_^
I hope you get a photo of one soon. I'm hoping to get some more good photos today. Considering I dropped my camera, and the battery cover keeps coming apart, and I have to hold it shut while pressing down on the shutter button, I guess I did okay.
Needless to say, I am thrilled by the experience.

SW, I found these photos of the Blk-chinned for you. They are probably the best showing of the different colors. Also, the Blk-chin. is a bit smaller than you Anna's.

So pretty SW!!! :-)
It's so interesting how the color changes! Makes them even more special.
Wow, duc, that was incredible. I had no idea. I know from my peacock (which are still legal here), how the feather can change it's color. I'm pretty sure that Zippy is probably a female black chinned. I am going to try to get a closer up.
The wind blows all the time here. I found six hummers in the gh when I went out to look for olympic swimmers in the pool (frogs/toads NOT gophers!) first thing this morning. It was a gray may kind of day, with a gentle breeze blowing. I've been leaving the door open a couple of inches so they can shelter in there. I was pretty surprised to see so many in the same place at once. They seem to use both feeders equally, and the wind gets pretty strong every afternoon, especially in the summer time. Been known to blow all the "nectar" out of the feeder. Which is why I quit using them and started to plant B.fly and H.bird food plants.
The female I've been referring to as Zippy. I think she is a female black chin hummer. What say you?
Duc, that little guy's beak is "warped." What effect does that have on his feeding? Does hi just stick his tongue out and the beak remains outside the blossom or the hole on the feeder? I've wondered about this with other pics of hummies with what looks like bent beaks.

Oh my, KaperC, look at that photo! It is awesome! You can see the anatomy of the wings underneath the feathers, with the light behind him!!! Isn't that amazing?!
Linda
duc, I love the color of the rufous. Zoom often comes up and talks to me. Chitters away. Usually when I'm not pointing the camera at him. I haven't figured out if he is scolding me or if he is just saying howdy.
Twin, I'm not so sure that his beak is deformed. I've seen all of my visitors beaks open or partially open like duc's friend. Usually just before they squeak up. LOL!
KC, what an awesome couple of photos! ^_^
What photo program do you use? You can make a copy of the photo, then you can "fix" it by cropping the photo. No harm since it is just a copy. You can play around and undo it if you don't like the results. Do remember the quality and clarity of the photo will decrease the smaller the area cropped is. I don't think I'm making sense.
I loved the hummer bath, and they really do disappear into the salvias. Tell your DH, KC that he did good!
I'll start a new thread tomorrow for our continuing hummer adventures.
