Becky's MGs

Niiiice!

Clatskanie, OR(Zone 9b)

That is so funny. I am not alone. I will make an educated guess of PEANUTS. 2 years ago I bought a bag of raw peanuts to feed the squirrels and chipmonks. They came up by the scads in every tub and pot I had outside, all summer.

I wish I had put a few pounds of Kawaii and Sunsmiles out in the squirrel feeder. I would have had them planted everywhere. lol Frank

Melbourne, FL

Peanuts for sure. I used to see them all the time, then I started buying the roasted/unsalted ones for the squirrels. You sure have a ton of plants coming, Becky. Can't wait to see all the blooms.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Frank and gardenpom - I knew that folks who feed the squirrels would know what the plant was! LOL! Yep! It is indeed peanuts! I have several plants growing around the yard and decided to leave them for now to see how they develop. I've never grown peanuts before! LOL Veggie gardening is also looking like something I want to try ... or at least a watermelon! :-) :-)

Darren - Thanks! :-)

Mesilla Park, NM

Oh, I like that the peanuts germinate... do you leave them in the shells? I sure would like to grow some, but don't want the squirrels around, they used to eat all the fruit off the fruit trees in CA and drive me nuts..lol

Becky, you have quite a few going.. and I look forward to seeing your photos..

I'll bet those squirrels are waiting for the peanuts to grow! I'd be right there too.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

I feed the squirrels raw peanuts. Guess I might need to do what gardenpom does and get roasted, unsalted peanuts! LOL

I have to give y'all another bonus ... I don't know how many have heard about this, but ya gotta see this YouTube video. It's been getting about a million or more hits a day since this first aired on YouTube! It will make you smile from ear to ear:

Enjoy!

She is a fantastic singer.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

oh yes, when I saw this last night I started crying with joy.. sheesh..

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

This video is from the British version of American Idol. And of course, Simon, is one of the judges for this show as well. The video was filmed during an audition before the judges and a live audience. You won't believe this woman until you have seen and heard her. I think we will be hearing more about her in the future as well! What an amazing story!

She is an older, never been married (or even been kissed) woman. Youngest of 9 children. She has spent many years taking care of her ailing mother until her mum died. She has taken voice lessons and been singing since she was 12 years old. And boy does she have spunk!

You gotta see and hear her to believe it! Very inspiring for sure! It just gave me a big ole' smile! :-D

Mesilla Park, NM

What a voice... wow. I think too that we will be hearing more of her... I think the whole audience was behind her!

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

We have already learned alot about life from this woman that is for sure.. at least I have anyways..

This was a mystery MG vine - a volunteer... looks like it might be a Hanafubuki volunteer that had twin blooms on it today! Love this vine. Unfortunately, no pollen yet. Hopefully I will get lots of seeds from this one. :-)

beautiful!

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Thanks, Debra! I like the volunteer blooms a lot! The white throats on the blooms seem to be larger and more pronounced than the vines I grew last season. I think they are even prettier this time around! Hanafubuki has been one of my favorites! I'm glad that is what this volunteer vine is! :-) Sometimes nature does a better job than I could even imagine. :-) :-) :-)

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Becky - absolutely gorgeous bloom - and what a treat to see all the lovely stuff growing outdoors; will be a while for me.

And thank you for the YouTube link - I had heard about this on the radio this morning. I'm still choked up after listening to her sing...

Joanne

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Joanne - Thanks! You are growing some MGs indoors currently, right?

Yes! Susan Boyle is captivating in my humble opinion. I think it is because she is humble human being and someone you would never even think twice about. And she is getting a chance at her dream at the age of almost 48 years old! It's never too late to follow your dreams! She is certainly an inspiration. I expect to be hearing a lot more about her. I hope she makes an album. I will definitely buy it! I love her voice! :-)

Becky that Hanafubuki is an absolute beauty...

Susan Boyle as taken the UK by storm.... unfortunatly i didn't watch the show... just all the many repeats... and it warms me every time...
i do not usually like that type of show as i feel it's unfair to expose certain contestants to the mob ridicule that those shows condone... everyone was against Susan Boyle even the judges from the moment as she walked on... she soon changed everyones mind though... even mine... as i shall be watching the show this Saturday... :-)

Becky, the last one you showed, the pink blizzard with white central area is to DIE for! OMG save every one of those seeds! LOL

Joseph

South Venice, FL(Zone 9b)

Wow, that volunteer is so beautiful!

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

This singer is brave to sing beautifully when the judges and audience seemed to expect nothing great at all. I have never seen such a look of joy on the judges faces! Late in life is not too late to shine. :)

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Hanafubuki is so pretty in pink Becky. Just love it.

...imagine that as a Volunteer in my garden. Maybe I can get that lucky Next year~! ...right now i have the Indigo Feather as my best grower~ dunno why!!! ...but it is happy. I remember I think Frank (??) said in a different thread about cutting after the Sixth pair of true leaves to make it a dwarf for flowering in a pot, am I remembering right?...and Sorry for hijacking the Thread with that Question, But, Becky it IS your Idigo Feather Seed, so, half my post Is about the seeds / flowers YOU got going on, lol...
Cheers

Hey, Darren! I have not ever pinched the purps or tricolors, but, maybe I should, I have one seed that germinated for Wedding Bells and it is already putting out side shoots.. I don't know why, it is very short and doesn't even have a total of 6 leaves... I wonder if that is normal for tricolors.

Becky, I keep watching that Utube video over and over again... also, my daughter said that there is one where she sings "Cry Me A River", but I can't seem to load it up on my puter, I don't know why..

Also, that Hanahubuki may be a cross, I don't remember it having so much white in the center. It sure is a nice one though.

A - I, too, have watched the Susan Boyle video numerous times. It has choked up just about everyone I have sent the link to. I was reading more information about her. In this article, it states: "Susan suffered a mild form of brain damage at birth and she admitted to Sawyer that she was bullied when she was younger. “They did a bit,” she said, “but they always do that with someone who is quiet and I tended to be quiet at school." As I watched her during the recording, I picked up on the fact that she seemed a bit different in mannerism. Since I work with children with varying disabilities, I noticed different things and wonder if something more was going on with her than just being a bit eccentric. She has a bit of a child-like innocence about her. That makes her story all the more endearing. Here is a link to hear her first recorded song for charity 10 years ago: http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/2009/04/16/exclusive-susan-boyle-s-first-ever-song-release-revealed-listen-to-it-here-86908-21283564/ Her voice just blows me away! I love the "Cry me a River" song that she did. She has a voice that won't be silenced! She is such an talented soul ...

Yes! I wondered too when I saw the white throat on the volunteer if it might be a cross. I just have no idea what it could have possibly crossed with to get that throat and not some other colors too. That cultivar that I grew is such a wild child anyway ... I think it throws all kinds of characteristics. Here is the link to the vine I grew last season: http://davesgarden.com/community/blogs/t/beckygardener/10417/

I just downloaded the photos I took this morning and here is a photo of the 3rd bloom on the Hanafubuki volunteer. Less blizzard/spots, but still has that nice white throat. It also has variegated leaves which I love. I noticed that many of the cultivars I am currently growing out have variegated leaves. I had no idea there were that many cultivars with variegated foliage. Just more to love about these MGs ... :-)

I am getting into growing daylilies from seeds this year, too. I have 61 seeds that germinated of a variety of daylily crosses. Though it will be a couple of years before I know what the true blooms will look like. This is a photo of "Little Missy" daylily. I got this cultivar in a co-op that was very reasonably priced. :-)

Darren - Your Indigo Feathers looks great! Can't wait to see it blooming up a storm! :-)

Here's the large container with the Lady Yaguruma's Kaleidoscope starter vines. You can see the Trumpet Creeper has awoken from dormancy too.

The leaves on these vines are really odd. Look closely.

Yellow Chinese Evening Glory. First true set of leaves.

Pot of Kawaii and Sun Smiles. The lighter vine in the center looks like it might be a cross and a climbing vine instead of a mounding vine. Just my guess at this time.

Carnevale di Venezia is really starting to take off now. I am looking forward to seeing the blooms.

A fun vine. This is a Pipevine. I am not sure what cultivar it is. You can see the bloom and also a developing seed pod. A girl's gotta have her vines, ya know!!! Most of the Pipevines are highly invasive. So ... will keep this one in pot and remove pods. :-) I plant these vines for the Pipevine Swallowtail butterflies. :-)

This forum has really opened my eyes to the MG world. I'm so used to 'Heavenly Blue' or moonflowers that I had no idea of what else was available. What's a good general mail order source for seeds?
Debra - I took your advice from a month ago and planted some moonflower seedlings in plastic bottles yesterday. Had gotten them germinated in paper pots first since they were older seeds. I still have another month before I can plant out so they should have plenty of grow time.
Colin - I agree with your comments about these types of shows (re: Susan Boyle). I did listen to both songs and think that she's got a great voice and good control and timing. Nice to hear someone with a "real" voice.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Cindy - Welcome to the MG Froum!

I sent you a dmail.

Mesilla Park, NM

I think your pipevine is A. fimbriata (hopefully I spelled it right)

Becky, thanks for posting the link to "Cry Me A River", I haven't been able to get good reception on it, it breaks up during each word, so, I know it's my computer acting funny again.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Thanks A! YOU are right! I remember that name now and I looked it up to be sure. :-)
Dutchman's Pipevine Native Pipe Vine Aristolochia fimbriata and it is a host plant for the Pipevine Swallowtail butterflies. :-) http://www.maggiesgarden.com/Plant_Profiles/Plant_This/Pipevine/body_pipevine.html

Becky, please save some of those seedpods from the Dutchmans pipevine~ (INVASIVE OR NOT LOL~!!!) I would love to try it here~off to water the Back 40
:Darren

You're welcome... I love those vines and wish they were invasive here.. I never did see any butterflies on mine. I'm finally trying to learn how to garden in this part of the U.S. I've killed so many plants by pushing the zone..lol
