New Project #2

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Daylilies are very hard to kill! Toyota Tundra didn't kill it, ice storm won't either!

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

I have to hand it to Daylilies: they are tough and reliable. I don't think there is any other plant that i like to deadhead. for some reason, picking off the spent daylilies is relaxing.

My dogs are hard on them though: Amber the Lab thinks they have just the right amount of cushioning to lay on...

It will be another nice day here again.
We will not see average temps of 70° until, oh - July, maybe!

Cleaning out beds, pruning & weeding. I wish I could spend 4-5 days in a row & get it all done. But, then I'd have spend a week resting!

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Me too, Kayte. And lots of Tylenol. I wish we had your sunshine here today, although I can't complain ... the weekend was gorgeous!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

ok - it has been a couple of days that i have not posted and your probably thinking i've been slacking ----- well you'd be wrong:)

here are just a couple of the shots of beds i've edged and i think you can see a pile of dirt in the background - that would be all the dirt from the yard after edging - it will become another bed in the coming weeks

today i started a new wall with the blue stone i took down from the rock wall last year. this is really a retaining wall for a brick patio i'll build - behind it are an assortment of perennials and shrubs that will stay.

here is another pic in front of it - to the right will be a couple steps to go up into the patio - i build a screen in front of the foundation with 4x4's and lattice and cover the ac units. the plan would be to get rid of the window on the right and put a slider in at some point.

so what do you think of having a bed behind the patio?

in front of the wall will be about 5 - 6 jm's that can deal with sun and some some other shrubs and plants.

everything is shipping this week so i really needed to get this wall up. and i'm praying i'll have enough stone to put a small blue stone wall maybe 16" high in front of the back bed.

Bill - I have a suspicion that you don't know how to "slack", and if you ever caught yourself slacking, you'd give yourself a few stern words...
Seriously - I really like the idea of a bed behind the patio. If I understood correctly, this will give the sense of being out "in" the garden as opposed to being on the fringes of it.
Hope you have enough stone to complete your plan.

Another 70° today. No worries - we will be back to our usual grey drizzle shortly, about Wednesday, when the next system comes in. So out the door i go to see how much i can get done before it's too dark to see.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Your edges look perfect, Bill, and your new wall is looking great. My edges never look that perfect, at least not on all the bed. Some of the beds I end up edging, but I never have time to do that many. Just too many other things to do.

Today I did some burning and more cleaning out of beds. Next weekend will be the last time we can burn, so I hope it will be dry. It should be, according to the extended forecast on weather.com. Thurs. and Fri. will be dry, and it looks like the weekend will be very nice. Can't wait! :o) Tomorrow it's back to work. :o(

Bill, I absolutely LOVE your yard. Any thought to putting in a pergola over the patio with some vines planted? If not, I can see a raised wall along the edge of the patio to create a planter effect.
Kinda like this but not so enclosed or rigid. Ya know what I mean?

Looks great, Bill. So you mean you will build a patio next to that wall and between the patio and the house will be a bed?? I have to agree with Jen - a pergola - either 'attached' at one end to the house, or free-standing above the patio would be very nice. Not only can it provide shade for the patio, but will help 'face down' all the vertical space of the house.

I like this patio(from stratton landscape design)

jen i did have the thought of that although what i have planted may not get enough light. there is a wisteria on the side that would like to grow over the top. thinking - thinking

Decisions, decisions

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Well, he did ask!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

showers all day today - was able to finish the front half of the wall with steps and build the bed that will in front of the wall - now need to build a ring around the back so i have something to keep the brick in place. i know i do not have enough so i'll have to start dismantling the rest of the wall in front and do what i can with the stone i have.

South Hamilton, MA

showers? Downright downpours here.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

well yeah downpours - once i was wet it didn't matter

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Yup, downpours for sure!

ok I've decided I need a wha. I've checked all the suppliers and there are no 'whas' according to googleguy. Bummer. wha you are amazing! Look at all you've done in seconds! Have you thought about cloning yourself?!? Seriously, peoples like me need whas. Forget the other garden widgets; a universal 'wha' would become the ultimate landscaping wonder.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

LOL!

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Does the wha come with an acre?

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

funny dnut - i have been accussed of being a triple A. just need to be busy.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

So you'll tow me if I break down, Bill?

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

no problem:)

^_^

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Bill, you just keep amazing me.
If you found yourself slacking off, I'd bet you'd be sleeping!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Love the overhead shot showing several beds at once. Great job, Bill. I am in awe of the work you do in 'seconds'. I totally agree with dnut - I NEED a wha, too.

But this year I have a Jeff who has bought some plywood to start work on the kitchen cabinets. YIPPEE!!!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

That's exciting Jan!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

this "little" patio project is starting to be difficult. front wall is done and i've decided to go ahead and dismantle what is left of the blue stone wall out front. today i have spent sll day simply digging out the grass and underneath that a clay stone mix. it has been tough and not to mention wet. all grass is out and half the clay stone mix. not easy sledding!!

i did find time to plant three jm's and transplant a conifer - which was a break from what i had been doing.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

wha have you never heard of nap time? When you take a break it's nap time not 'plant 3 JMs and trasnplant a conifer' time.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i do not do naps - i know that may be a surprise:)

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Hyper is not a foreign word to you is it? lol
My brother is the same way Bill, he turned 61 last Nov. and i'm seeing signs of him starting to slow down. ^_^

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

not hyper at all celeste - just keep going and going - like that bunny on tv - to put it into terms you understand:)

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

"i do not do naps". Sorry wha but that's just plain funky weird.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i don't dance in the snow either:)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Napped for 2 1/2 hours today!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

I should have while the granddaughter and my mom were down napping, but NO, I was on DG instead.
