Propagation: Propagation part VII based on my own experience

(Sheryl) Gainesboro, TN(Zone 6b)

Oo oo oo - I got a Camellia today!!!!

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Oooooo PC!! What did you get? You lucky duck. Jeanette

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

I love camelias. What kind did you get Sheryl?

(Sheryl) Gainesboro, TN(Zone 6b)

Well - it's a big as my hand and has 4 leaves, so I wouldn't get too jealous, lol. It's "winter...." something - lightly doubled pink blooms - I'll have to run outside and get the name.

I went to the Nashville "Herb Show" yesterday. I was flat out amazed. They kept us lined up until 9:00. My friend and I were there at 8:45 and we were probably about 200 people back from the beginning of the line. By the time we got in there were already some plants sold out - I wasn't able to get the hardy Rosemary that I had wanted. But I got the Camellia, a couple calendulas, a "Grosso" lavender, a little variegated plectranthus, a lemon verbena and a Creeping Jenny plant. But it was like Walmart before Christmas in there - shew!

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

That sounds like fun. I used to love to go to orchid shows, but I have never been to an Herb show. My herbs look like Heck. I must replant some of them and see if I can bring them back to life. UGH.
Here is a picture I took yesterday of some of the field of daffodils in full bloom. I have been cutting since the weekend before Easter and there are still so many to cut. They are so beautiful and so many different varieties. I feel my work over the past 4 years has finally shown results this year. I have been collecting and planting daffy bulbs since May of 2005. They do their own propagating lol.
Enjoy. Can't you just smell them?

(Sheryl) Gainesboro, TN(Zone 6b)

Mmmm - sure can!

BTW, for any aficionados, I got "Winter's Fancy". Moderately vigorous, upright and outward. This lends itself to uilization as a hedge plant. Leaves leathery, glossy dark green. Flowers are deep pink, semi-double, creped, floriferous. Blooms from October to November.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Sheryl, do you have a picture?

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Sounds wonderful. Jeanette

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

I'm Jellous too... I definately need to get a camilea if they will do well in 6b....
Dave

Pawleys Island, SC

I know there are some camellia varieties that are hardy in zone 6, I just don't know which varieties they are. I have several I can send cuttings from if you would like to try rooting them.

No more threats. I finally uploaded the azalea pictures....
This may take several posts.

This is Azalea southern Indica, formosa. I have a hedge of them along 1 side of my driveway.

I believe this one is a kurume hybrid, but I can't remember it's name.

There are more, but I won't bore you with my slide show. LOL

Here is 1 of my favorite camellias. This one is Grace Albritton.

Today, I have a gorgeous purple bearded iris blooming and a Jackmani Clematis. I gotta go back outside to see what else I can find.
I finally built my aeroponics propagator, so I am planning to try some camellia cuttings in it. Wish me luck. Linda

I think this camellia is Professor Sargeant, but I am not sure.

Hope everyone has a great day.

Good morning linda:
If you can spare the cuttings I would love to try some. The thing I am fascinated by is the winter bloom period. I do know they use the sascantuan (spelling???) for tea... at least its what my memory says from the discovery channel. Also the carolina's are the only place in north america that it is grown for production.
I know some are out there saying what about celistial seasons tea, out of colorado??? They use other plants for most of their tea's.
Linda I love the pic s.... bothe are beautiful flowers.
More to follow
Dave

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

OOOOOOOH Wow, I hope my camelias bloom before I get too old to enjoy them. LOL
Lucky Linda. Hugs.

Pawleys Island, SC

Thanks. When I managed my first nursery ( landscape shrubbery), I bought every camellia I could afford. I have a good selection of varieties and now they bloom beginning in october and usually end in May. I don't know what I would do without winter flowers.LOL
June and July is the best time for cuttings, so I will post a list of the varieties I can cut then.

Dave, I was looking at the lantana yesterday. I think I will take up several plants. These are New Gold, but there may be some Mrs. Huff or Pink Caprice mixed in. I will let you know when I can get them ready.
Also the Camellia Sasanqua is the fall blooming variety. They have smaller leaves than the Japonica and can usually tolerate more direct sun. The Camellia sinensis is the tea plant grown in charleston. I don't know about the one from colorado. If I can find some charleston tea, I will send you some.

Jberger, how old are your camellias? If they were started from cuttings, they should bloom within a couple of years. If they were started from seed... well that's a whole different story.

Right now I am looking for more yard space. LOL. That is a never ending battle for me. I have a few plants that I think would be root hardy if I planted them in the ground and it would sure help the greenhouse and aviary in the wintermonths.

Heading, back outdoors. I'll check in later. Linda

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Linda, I have two camellias that are 2 years old and they are about three feet high and I have them in the bird room just now. I got them from the Camellia Forest Nursery in N.C.
One is April Blush and the other April Tryst. the one I got from Logees is smaller called Fragrant Pink. I would guess that baby is not even one year yet. It is only in a 2.5 in. pot.
I have them all in the bird room just now, East morning sun. BTW do they like full sun or morning sun.
This day is a total waste to me as far as the plants are concerned. I worked like a beaver on Sat. all day. Cleaned out the GH and all. Yesterday the sun was in and out so I cleaned bird cages. Then the crap hit the fan and the rains and wind came back and everyything that we did Sat. and Sun now look like heck. Winds are over 40 gusts in from the ocean which makes it even feel colder. It is in the upper 40's but nasty. I even had allergies kick up yesterday because of this stupid weather change. Oh well, I at least went to the dentist, grocery shopping, hardware store for supplies, bank for the HorsePark of NJ, Compounding Pharmacy for my vitamins, so that is what I did today.
Now I am catching up with you guys and enjoying some down time. I am pooped. Just could not sleep with itchy eyes and sneezing. I love Spring Time, especially April LOL.JB

Do they like full sun or just morning sun?

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Linda: Any help is always apreciated. I found this neat little fellow today. I am wondering if its going to keep the same leaf hapes throughout its life? Once he is big enough I will share cuttings.
Linda you shure did boost my morale today... I was feeling a bit down and then you started chatting about camelias and the great photos.
thank you soooo much

Hey Dave, pick yourself up and smile. I am Mrs. Grumpy today because of the stinkin weather. Have you ever done propagation on bougainvillea? I am not good at it. There must be a special time to take cuttings and I am not paying attention. I should ask Chantell. She would know. I hope you are feeling better......here is a big hug for you from this old lady. Now, feel better. JB

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Hi JB: thats the first time I have had someone talk about the dentist in a posative tone... I will abstain from a guess on the sun requirements for camelia's. I know here we prefer morning sun over pm sun as it can be in excess of 100 degrees in the afternoon in june, july and august.
oh well its nap30 tty soon
dave

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Thank you JB... Bougainvillia can be a bit persnickity.... I know we had a lot of failure over success but we did enough to make it worth while. I know temperature is key as with most tropicals. as well as humidity.... i will do some research and let you know. It might be a day or so.....
I know my bad mood has to do with the crowded house.... I just have to hide and get lots of rest. huggs
Dave

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Dave, did you ever try and raise trees of any kind? Take your nap and talk when you feel better.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

JB... I have a hundred redbud trees an few golden raintree and some japanese maples. more to follow
Dave

Pawleys Island, SC

JB, bouganvilleas love bottom heat. If you have a piece of slate, or a stepping stone that really absorbs the heat, use it. I would suggest cuttings in june too. I sure wish I had your energy. I have worked outside most of the day and i am wiped!. I am going to Mom's tomorrow so that I can rest up from the yard work. ( not really, I just want to hang out with her.)

I have camellias both in full sun and dappled shade. The fact that I am close to the beach and have lots of humidity may help to offset the high temperatures during the summer. I am familiar with Camellia forest Nursery. They have some gorgeous plants. Unfortunately my budget doesn't like them too much. LOL. I have permission to take cuttings from my neighbors plants this summer and She has some varieties that I don't have. I hope to have a lot root.

Dave, I am glad I was able to help with the mood. I know after all of the company we have had for the past couple of weeks, ( with mom being sick and my sister being here) I just wanted to be a hermit for a while. It was nice and I loved it, but man, I was wiped out!

Most of what I did today was clean up the things that didn't survive my neglect over the winter. I have lost almost all of my passies, but it is ok, I don't really have space for them and the butterflies ate them down to nubs last year so nothing bloomed.

We are putting in several new flower beds, so I am planning to plant brugmansia and then underplant with daylilies and iris. I will have to take pictures as we start to show progress.

Better run before I put you all to sleep. LOL, have a great night. Linda

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Hi linda:
i spent the morning doing the same thing. I am only good for a couple of hours then I am wiped out. I think I have one of the babies from your passies. I managed to get 2 to root I just wish I new what color the flowers will be. Ummm the plants are green if that helps...LOL
I spent a good part of my time scrounging up 4" pots from failures of last year. i have a bunch of small hostas I need to get into 4" pots. I already potted up the larger ones that will bounce out of their 6" pots I planted them into. I moved my blue angel into the bed we are planning to plant him into. Its funny looking at the little tissue culture plugs and seeing what they will become this year. I did manage to get 4"ers bleached and ready to pot tomorrow.
I found a neat sport or seedling variation of a japanese maple today. Its thin leaves but not thread leaf. Its pretty kool. I will try to attach it.
I also found some calibracio that survived the winter in my unheated GH. well it does have a 100 watt bulb in it but thtas it for heat.
SIL spent the day jack hammering out the patio. the silver maple did a huge crack in it from one end to the other, The roots were huge. I am so looking forward to getting everyone in their new homes. I did warn dw that I may plant and rip it back out and redo it many times over until I get it to the point I like it.
I hope to chatt again tomorrow am. Thank you to everyone for the uplifting morning

Dave, those little hostas you just got should give you a giant lift. They look like they are doing great. How many do you have left? They really look good. Take a nap and then look around at the sun and all the gorgeous plants out there.

I have to cut the old stuff off of my peonies, helebores, pyracanthas, golden hops, black sumbacus (Elderberry), and oh so many things. Besides trying to find some alfalfa bales for my garden. I am running so late because we still have patches of snow and ice here and there. Would you believe it????

Take care, and all of you enjoy this spring, we finally had a gorgeous sunny day.

Jeanette

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Lucky you Janette. It is so foggy here I can not see across the barnyard. I am getting ready to go to the doctor for bloodwork results (just cholesterol) and I hate driving in the fog. Never know what the other guy is going to do.

It is to clear up today but obviously someone did not get the memo. I rains continued in the form of storms last night for several hours. My allergies, which I seldom have a problem with are driving me crazy with sneezing and itchy eyes. I do not take anything but allegra and that makes me sleepy and dries me up so much I hate it. So, I just sniff and sneeze. UGH. Dave, do not overdo it. Take your times out and enjoy a rest in between projects. Some projects can get very long, so pace yourself. You know the drill

Irbatoo, I was thinking of planting my brugs in a shady spot kind of protected because I can not see me potting them and moving them constantly like I have done to this one big one I have. They are so high maintenance...and frail considering their size. The results area wonderful, but I am too old for the constant attention thing. I like to enjoy.

Some poeple make me crazy. Or crazier. Anyhow, I got an email from a customer on ebay. Now I am selling black pussy willow in 3inch pots. Nice foot tall plants , rooted and growing for $8.99. I got this email asking if I am selling just one for $8.99 and can it be picked up to save the postage. GRRRRRRRR.If I were selling two for that price I would have said so. I hate to dicker, I hate , when I am very clear the plants are what they are and someone always seems not to understand. That is one reason I can not deal with people in retail situations. I get so annoyed at their stupid questions. Oh well, off I go to the doc. Take it easy Davie. See you all later. JB

Miles City, MT(Zone 3b)

Guess what everyone, we have SUN!!! Supposed to get up to high 70's today. Of course, that is only for a couple of days, but we take what we can get. I ran out of the 3+" pots so my transplanting has come to a swift halt. BUT..... was at Wally world yesterday, they were tossing the leftover tulip bulbs (sad sad sad) but I talked them out of the pots by helping put them in the (gulp) garbage can. Wish they would donate those bulbs to the city, I would even plant them in the parks around town for them. Just hate to see the waste, and the babies crushed. Anyway I have been soaking, washing, and drying.
Don't trust the soil they have, so rinsed all that out and soaked overnite in bleach water. This morning was sudsy Dawn and blistering hot water wash. Even dried them. Afternoon will be transplanting again. Still need more pots, tho. Dave, how's the co-op coming.
Are you feeling a little better? Linda, glad things are settling down a little for you. JB patience is a virtue:-D (sorry couldn't resist)

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Lee, that reminds me of a cartoon I have in my kitchen. It has this older woman sitting forlornly on a rock looking at some flowers...she said:

" Now that I am older, I thought it was great I had more patience. -sigh-

Turns out I just don't give a S***."

Sorry, couldn't resist.......hugs to all you nice people from naughty old me. JB

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Lee: I am getting on the co-op tomorrow. And hope to have the intrest thread tomorrow. I finished planting all my hostas. Boy am I tired. Over 150 of the little buggers. I had to forage for 4" pots for the littler ones. Of course this ment lots of bending and emptying alog with the bleach session on the pots to clean them up. Of course I did some shifting of plants outside. I did remove the sheet of protection off the front of the GH.
I got a bit better feeling just being in the sunshine. Of course te SIL was doing the heavy work.... jack hammer and wheel barrow out the old concrete from the patio. We will be building a planterbed later this week under the oak tree.
well its time for a short siesta and then its off to get both my hair's cut...lol actually I will be one that keeps his hair all throughout my life...
I will check in tomorrow am... get your specific wish list together so I can get exact quotes on everything.
Dave

(Sheryl) Gainesboro, TN(Zone 6b)

Good one JB - I'm with you.... but it has nothing to do with flowers!!!

Pawleys Island, SC

I agree with you both. Patience may be underrated.LOL Dave, I know it felt great to be in the sunshine. That always seems to help me. I wanted to check in before I head out this morning. I am going to work in Mom's yard today and maybe, I will get to go plant shopping too. Mom loves to shop for anything and I really only like to shop for plants.
Dave have you ever tried winter sowing hosta seed? I planted some last year and basically just left them alone for the season and this spring, they are big enough to plant out. I would love to have tons of them, but I need an irrigation system 1st.Yesterday I worked on my "grocery store orchard". It is all of the fruits I have grown from seed that I have saved from the produce I buy. I can't resist planting them. I wrote about it in my blog yesterday.
Well, I had better get going, I have a teacher conference about algebra. (YUCK!).
I'll check in later.
Linda

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Hi Linda and everyone else:
Good Mornin: My plans are to gather info on supplies to get the co-op going. SIL is moving rocks from one flower bed to make a new larger flower bed around the oak tree out front. I am going to go rescue a Japanese Maple and hosta from the flower bed. I noticed them the other day.
Once I get the interest thread going i will sort out my mature hosta's to plant throughout the yard. My goal is a slowly built landscape that flowers as the previous plants start to fade. I realize it could be all bought at once... but where is the fun in that
Oh yea I will have to get a nap in as I got to sleep at 2 and I was up by 5:30 so its a wierd day.
See ya soon
Dave

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Dave, I have two questions today.
I saw a Hosta called "Venus". It gets a beautiful flower and sells for $19.95 bareroot shippping from Wayside Gardens. It is really a beauty. Do you have any of that? It has a sweet smelling bloom that resembles a night-blooing cactus. The flowers get as big as 5 inches. Wow, that is some plant and I am not a hosta fan.

Next. we have about six beautiful red maple and four dwarf red maple. Are they the Japanese? My SIL rescued them from the nursery dump and planted them in the field. They all came out this spring absolutely perfectly. Someone decided just to dump them at the nursery for some reason. He brought them home, took care of them and now we have these beauties. I have no idea what he will do with them. He said they are worth about $200 or more each. Especially the dwarf. They are definitely Maple and I forget the names they have on them. I know the one is called Acer rubrum 'Franksred'.
The bigones are over 6 ft. tall and the dwarfs are about 3 ft.

Morning everyone....cloudy today. Sick dog, rained again half the night, too wet to plant outside and just another gloomy day . Think I will do my bookwork today and drink coffee and coke. May just eat a pizza. OOOOOH, that sounds good. OOh yes, it hailed last night. I had put out all my jasmine plants just before the storm. Wouldn't you know. JB

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Mornin JB:
I am sorry I do not have that variety. You might search the plant files and see if someone has one they might trade a split with you, or if your lucky get it for postage. I will try to look later to see if I might see one a bit cheaper.
Japanese maples are Acer palmatum or Acer japonicum. Some varieties can get down right silly as far as the cost. they will go to zone 5 to zone 6 depending on the cultivar. I will say if you have the room to do it I would try a few. A god crop, perticularly the thread leaf weeping and the ones that stay red through the year. I did manage to get a few of my orangeola's to sprout. its going to be neat to see what they become. I don't know if you are thinking of growing some just for giggles?
Rd maples are another good tree. I really do like them. I spotted some new seeds on my norway maple so Its going to be fun harvesting the propellars. weeeee
I hope to be back on arround 2:00ish with info....

I have room but I am not sure my SIL wants to bother with them. He is the boss you know. I am sure if I really insisted I wanted to try, he would say sure. He is easier to get along with than my daughter. LOL Later GAter.

Hello all!

JB... It's nice to see a neighbor on here :-). Let me know where you are, I like to support a local plant place and usually go to Hallocks (sp?) in New Egypt every spring. I just went there last week and found that they are only selling there perennials in gallon pots now and did away with there 4 inch perennials. I was looking for another place to browse through :-). I've been trying to do the same thing.... get my gardens stocked up enough to eventually sell on ebay or something for a little extra cash. But I'm a long way from there. I plan to take the master gardeners program when my last one goes off to school in 2 years. Drop me a D-mail. Maybe I have something from my garden that you'd like too.;-)
