My second attempt at Spanish Flag, and I'm starting to wonder if these are really Spanish Flag. Experts?
Spring Glories Part 2
Wonderful photos! Love your Rebecca vine! What a show-stopper!
I hate to tell you this ... but the Spanish Flag is not what I see in the photo. I don't get it? I have planted a bunch of the seeds (which I also shared with you from the same package from Onalees) and mine are all Spanish Flag vines growing. I don't know why you are getting a completely different plant. I will say one thing though ... my Spanish Flag took longer to germinate than my other MG vines. Didn't you start them in pots first? I thought I saw photos of the baby vines and they DID look like SF? It makes no sense to me!
I thought so also, these are certainly from your seed packet. Even Ron said I finally had Spanish Flag growing when he first saw the seedlings. Yes, if you look back to the first thread, I grew them in egg cartons, and marked the side. These germinated very quickly, however. I use bottom heat and most of my seedlings come up rather quick.

They look exactly like the other two I had to rip out.
gardenpom - I am wondering if the SF are dying after you transplant them into your garden bed. I don't know how sensitive their root system is. Here is a photo of mine that I just took. These seeds came from the same pack I sent to you. I know what you had germinating WERE Spanish Flag vines. What happened after you put them into your garden is a mystery.
I over planted too many SF seeds along with some Alyssum seeds.

Almost all the Poppy seeds I threw out were the typical Pink blooms, but today I had a different one - this is a double bloom poppy! I had planted various cultivars of Poppies, but very few of them ever made it to maturity. This one I just love! It closed up more and looks like a carnation now. So pretty! I thought you might enjoy this photo. :-)
love that calla... just gorgeous... I love pink :) that would look good planted around some of those Rebecca Mg vines :)

What a Rebecca (!)...WOW (!)
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=6411504
OKay,This is definitely a Morning Glory
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=6411496
and NOT any type of Polygonum or Fallopia as the cotyledons of Polygonum and Fallopia look completely different...so,no fears in that department...
The cotyledons are still attached and visible...the cotyledons are either Ipomoea lobata or something very closely related to it...
The seeds and
cotyledons of Ipomoea lobata
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/13711/
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/15318/
look very much like both
Ipomoea coccinea
http://www.forestryimages.org/images/768x512/5309082.jpg
and
Ipomoea hederifolia
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/52433/
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/116762/
...all 3 species can have multi-lobed leaves or heart shaped leaves, although cordate (heart) shaped leaves on I.lobata is very rare...
The plant in the photo here
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=6411496
is either :
1) Ipomoea lobata displaying a rare leaf form...in which case ' I must have it at all costs '...
2) Ipomoea coccinea
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/162287/
or
3) Ipomoea hederifolia
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/115427/
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/52431/
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/81987/
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/81988/
Ipomoea lobata can start out with a cordate leaf with peripheral points that jut out,but usually progresses rapidly to a multi-lobed leaf form
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/15487/
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/16279/
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/1318/
Ipomoea lobata produces flowers on spires
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/111174/
Ipomoea coccinea
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/86117/
and
Ipomoea hederifolia
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/52431/
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/88426/
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/175678/
produce flowers in clusters from the axial and terminal stem areas...
These are all in the subgenus of Quamoclit and in section Mina
which also includes
Ipomoea cristulata
Ipomoea quamoclit
Ipomoea sloteri
My best assessment is that this plant here
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=6411496
is either Ipomoea lobata showing an unusual leaf form or the very closely related Ipomoea hederifolia...
I think it's worth it to see if it is I.lobata producing an unusual leaf form, but of course it is up to you...as soon as the plant starts to flower the ID can be narrowed much quicker...
I did provide an initial ID of Ipomoea lobata based upon the fact that it came out of a package that was labeled as I.lobata , the seeds looked close enough and the cotyledons looked consistent
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=6288571
and the cotyledons on the initial seedling photo are of the same basic structure and are actually still attached to the plant as can still be seen in the recent plant photo center left , just beneath the true leaf
...all things considered an ID of I.lobata was quite likely and consistent...the only other possibilities were the very closely related species which can only be precisely differentiated by inflorescent structures...
I'm doing the best I can although a certain reasonable margin of error is unavoidable at this early stage due to the very close structural similarities...
I am very (!) sure that the plant here
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=6411496
is definitely an Ipomoea Morning Glory and is either Ipomoea lobata or something so closely related that it is not possible with absolute certainty to differentiate between species at this point...
TTY,...
Ron

Becky, a wonderful garden you have already! gardenpom, looking at the photo closely I agree with Ron, they could be lobata.. I have seeds from mine (called mina) and some from another source here in DG, and the seeds look entirely different... both germinated to become full vines with flowers... and pretty much looked the same..
I was expecting some different leaves by now, glad it may still be Lobata. Thanks for all the info Ron (I sure hope it is the one you need at ANY cost). HaHa. Becky, these are the plants, they did not die. I have watched them like a Hawk. Your flowers are beautiful. I recently started some white Callas that are growing well. I'll keep everyone informed about these devilish plants.
Becky, your pink Poppy is beautiful!!!

Gardenpom, what digital camera do you have ?
Your camera with more Nil ipomoea will be dynamite !
Thank you. I am currently using my Olympus Evolt 500 with my macro lens. I sometimes use the 500 with my 300 mm lens and shoot a macro-type shot in zoom.

Great shots... just beautiful...
Brittany
pretty pretty love those mgs!
Gardenpom - Are these 2 here
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=6491124
actually different colors (?)...when viewed in the same light (?)...and is the lower flower just 'appearing' much darker just because it is in the shadows (?)...
Curious if the lighting alone is causing the significant difference in the color as seen in the photo...
No, they were visibly different colors to the eye also, Ron. That's why I took the pic, I loved the difference. Just noticed I posted these in the wrong thread, they should have been in 3.
