Yours are nice! I hope they do well for you. I tried some in spring last year. Got them in a co-op and that's when they sent them. I tried some indoors because someone said that was the better way to do it. Neither the ones outside or the ones inside did anything. I even went through the pots and couldn't find the corms - they must have rotted. Last fall I planted some outside when I did my other spring bulbs. Hopefully they will come up - if not I give up. ; )

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i tried some from HD a several years back and they petered out after maybe 2 years - not worth it for me.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Just got this email. I have to look up my free plant. And make sure I am planting these where I had originally planned. Patti

Nice gift---I love freebies! My art teacher has those blue windflowers planted by the door to the studio--they bloom reliably for her, but she's a great gardener---I drool over her roses.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Nice haul, Victor! Very lovely shrubs/trees there! I especially love the redbud.

I love that 'Low Glow' pine. Must have one, must have one.....!!!!

Karen

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks. Yes, the Low Glow is something else. They said they don't sell many from the catalog but many at the open houses.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

I was out back on the deck early afternoon and heard a truck stop on the street. Then I saw a brown van go around the corner. Ran out front to see if it was for me. YIPPEE!!! I got my Old House Gardens order today, but I have to wait about a month to plant:
Canna 'Firebird'
Canna 'Robert Kemp'
Dahlia 'Bishop of Llandaff'
Dahlia 'Jane Cowl'
Gladiolus 'Atom' free
Dahlia 'Andries Orange' free gift

I've never done dahlias before or Cannas of Glads
It said to wait to plant when you plant tomatoes. That's usually aorund Mother's Day here. Am I right? or should I plant earlier. It said I could also plant indoors. Do any of you do that?

Thomaston, CT

I sometimes plant my dahlias in pots---sometimes I'm too lazy---they bloom earlier if you start them indoors, & in CT that sometimes makes a difference. I've begun planting glads the last week of April, but only if the soil is warm & dry. When you plant them in rows, dig a trench, & fill in only partially---as the glad grows, keep filling in---that way they don't need staking. I used to sell glads in my yard, but one winter, the thrips ruined about 200 corms, & that was it for me---& I had used an insecticide---very bummed!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Thank you! Great tip about planting the glads. Looking forward to this grouping. They are all reds or orangey.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Robin, that's a good tip on planting the glads. I will try that. I got a bunch from the co-op this year. I've done them before, and they needed staking. What a royal pain!!! Would be nice not to have to stake them. Too many other things to do already.

Karen

Thomaston, CT

I dig down about a foot---then fill the trench at least 3 times--I broke down & ordered a hellebore---it was a mix, so I don't know what color I'm getting.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

You will love the hellebore, Robin. Is this your first? I have 5, 3 of which are now in bloom. I want more!

Karen

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

now that I know Hellebores will bloom in shaded Blue Angel hosta area i I want more too.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

They're on my gold list.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

'Caramel' is one of my favs. Mine doesn't like alot of shade though.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Peter, I hope your back is repairable and quickly. It is good he caught the fracture.

Wha, Nice haul. My order came so we planted all day. Got it all done except 2 rose bushes, an some clematis and one viburnum from Bluestone that I forgot to plant. We need to make cages tomorrow, so I hope the darlings don't get chomped tonight. I got my final 2 Japanese Maples from Topiary gardens today too, Ebony and Baldsmith.

Plus 8 rose bushes and the 2 Japanese Maples got planted along with the shrubs. I am waiting for a couple more Ilex, including the needed male pollinator Apollo for a few of the gals. But those holes are dug.

Now I am very very tired, but it will look great in a few winters. My DH was so helpful. We are going out to dinner tonight, which I normally would love, but I could crawl into bed right now, except that we invited a friend to join us. Off to try to look presentable. Patti

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wow - nice list of work, Patti. Lots of ilex! Mine have grown pretty slowly, but have a nice berry set now. Get some rest.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Victor, I assume it will take a few years for them to produce any berries. But I have wanted them for so long, that it seemed right to do it up big. We have tucked them into the fringes of the naturalized parts of the property, so their being small won't be so odd for a long time. Patti

Thomaston, CT

I'm very tired, too, just from reading the list---very ambitious! But I can't wait to see what they'll look like---the roses should be in bloom this summer, Patti. I planted a lily today---Anastasia---that's it----still recuperating from yesterday, & the 2 miles I walked with Suey this afternoon.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Gamekeeper, I had that problem not too long ago. I can't remember now if that was last year or the year before. Not fun.

A lot of work, Patti! You deserve a rest!

Karen

Thomaston, CT

Lilium 'Boogey-woogey' arrived today, along with hosta 'Eskimo Pie'----when I went to rake the leaves off the shade garden today, I found 7 airedale bathtubs! Heaven only knows what he dug up! Anyway, I certainly don't need to dig a hole for the hosta, but I need to find some soil to fill in the damage-----grrrrrr!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

robin eskimo pie is a nice one i got it last year

here is JM orange dream from topairy gardend - it was 43" tall!!

Looks nice, Bill!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Robindog, I love your term "bathtubs" for your doggies holes. We have two that are always making new ones too. I try to plant things in them that they won't like, rose bushes, lavender, shrubs, etc, but they always find a new spot to wreak. I adore the dogs but not their holes. They dug up a bunch of tulips recently! grrrrrrrrrrrrr. I thought I would be clever one year and dug a bed for them and planted nothing in it. They never used it once. I planted it the next year and guess what, they started digging "bathtubs" in it. Go figure. Patti

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

My dog will dig holes here and there, too. In her case she is looking for chipmunks and voles. She will kill them if she gets them.

Karen

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

send her over, voles is us.
Just bought MolMax, gunna kill them if I can.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

She doesn't get many voles. They're good at escaping. I wish she could get more.

Karen

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Robin you and I have the same lilies going in, 'Anastasia' in honor of my Great-Grandmother, and 'Boogie Woogie' just because I wanted another one. lol
