Tropical Garden #34

Portland, TX(Zone 9a)

Now that is a flourescent PINK flower Dave; just love it.

Hey Rita is your yellow allamanda a vine or a bush? I have the shrub and it has always been one of my favorites; although I seem to be saying that a lot about a lot of different plants lately. I definately haven't gotten over my spring fever.

Quoting:
The Amaryllis pasidina is very pretty, it deserves another showing when fully opened.

I second that; would love to see another picture of it.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I third that.. and I love that hot neon bright beautiful PINK!

Keaau, HI

Here is the whole plant, from a couple weeks ago. I'll take a picture when the sun comes up tomorrow; it should be in peak florescence!

Cochliostema odoratissimum is one of the few members of the Spiderwort Family, Commelinaceae, which is an epiphyte. It likes to live up in trees like Bromiliads (fits the same niche) hence the similar appearance.

It is native from Nicaragua to Ecuador.

That Pasadena amaryllis is outstanding. I believe it is an older cultivar, then like everything else, was no longer popular. Now back as desirable because white marking is dramatic as well as stable. I was thrilled when I found mine at WM 3 yrs ago.

How tall do tree ferns get??? do you know?

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

20, 30 feet.

Rj your tree fern looks to take more sun then I thought possible. Is that right?

Portland, TX(Zone 9a)

You kidding right? 20 or 30 feet????

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Yes, the older they are the more sun they can take. It late morning and late afternoon sun. When summer hits I'll probably have to put up an umbrella. They don't seem to mind it when it's cool.

uh huh Patty..that's what I read yesterday at Tops Tropicals.

Keaau, HI

20 to 30 ft. easy!

Well crap I may need to move mine. It's right under the eave of the house. Grant it, it will be awhile before it grows tall enough to start hitting the house, but how hard will it be to move it if I wait. I hate to put it back in a pot, but I don't know where it will fit. Bummer!!! Got to give this some thought.

Keaau, HI

Putting it in the shade of a large tree would be helpful to the fern.

Don't know what happened to my 2, but they got about 15' and died. Go figure that they would live that long and then poop out! But, boy, were they beautiful.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

That's exactly where mine is, shaded by the water oak.

Now that's how I want to be taking pictures of mine..from underneath!

Rj, the banana shrub (Michelia Figo) does have a sweet banana scent.
The blue sky in the background makes your flowers pop. I have blue plastic in the background of my picture. We are expecting a few more cold days next week.

phughes, the allamanda is a bush. I planted it in the ground last summer, your plant must be covered in blooms. I find myself saying that a lot too (my favorite).

LouC, thanks for the link, I have always admired and envied Gothqueen's vast collection of plants, but mostly her knowledge of them. I will post a few pictures as soon as I get my pond cleaned up.

I love this time of year, with the garden really coming to life.

Hey Randy, your weed is Tinantia pringlei.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

RJ: save some of those dead heads for me on that Tinantia pringlei weed would you? they remind me of my little jumping blue flowers... I love those spots on them!

Portland, TX(Zone 9a)

My allamandas are just starting to green up; no blooms yet but hopefully soon. It felt cold this morning though it was in the high 50's.

Red Oak, TX

phughes, TGIF, it is in the 30's here this morning.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

ah thanks Dave! Your putting some names on things that were blank in my journal.

Sure JW I will save you some.

Patty an TX folks..I just read that we're getting two punch windy cold fronts starting Sun going into Monday, with lows here in the 40's.

Speaking of weeds, do you know or anyone know what this one is? I took the original off a flower arrangement..they spread like chocolate plants. (I love em)
The very tiny pink flowers open up at dusk.

Randy, are the leaves fleshy, almost succelent? Maybe Jewels of Opar, Talinum paniculatum.

Portland, TX(Zone 9a)

Please tell me that is a belated April Fool's RJ. I don't want back to back cold fronts. I may be holding off planting my coleus tomorrow.

Red Oak, TX

Rj, I regret not buying the pink Ti plant when I had the chance, and a few others. It was a very nice day today, but I am also preparing for our bout of bad weather.
It was a very slow day on the Forum, maybe everyone has spring fever and was out in the garden.

Phughes, It is true there is another cold front headed this way.
