Well, I have some flowering almonds in bud.. but I cant prune them.. they are done in the snipping department for this year since they were pruned last season for this year
Yard to vase - spring 2009 series
Nice group of daffodils! *Reminder to self; plant a million daffodil bulbs this fall*
You wont be sorry! I will take more dafs any time!
I put a handfull of the bulbs in old nursery cans then submerge the pot underground...keeps the moles out and makes for easier lifting later if you decide to transplant. I pick mine constantly, then leave the leaves to die back and replenish the bulbs... I never fertilize them.. go figure and they like my swamp! And I got pith porr soil to boot....!
I actually will get trades in and plant them in the spring. My gardening friends will dig theirs and send them to me dirt free with the leaves on in the spring and just wrapped in a damp papertowel. You can of course wait until fall to move them, but its so much easier to find them this way and well, heck, I have been planting my spring bulbs in the spring for years! When I get them, I put them inthe cans.. let the leaves die and then sink the pots. I cant say it makes much differene if you sink the pots right away, but for me by the time I get to heeling them in, they are dead on top. I have a garden bed that I am edging out and still need dafs to finish that project.
You can visit my GPS thread and see how folks have sent me stuff and what goes on with the plants and all in my garden there from parcel to soil to harvest etc!

Wow blossom even that dandelion looks drenched. More of the same here today and a severe thunderstorm watch this afternoon and eve. It poured and poured a while ago, and everything is just squishy!
Thanks for the info Dianne on the dogwoods, 4 days is not very long and my trees don't have a lot to spare so think I might pass on the cutting and just stick with the photos when they bloom.
blossom, don't you love the almond, mine is blooming as well and gave it a big trim last fall as well.
Planti, don't forget those tons of bulbs, perhaps you can sneak over to blossoms and pick a few of hers in the meantime!
Oops, BISHOPS WEED.. go to other forum

Planti, I only had one daff LOL, think the squirrels dug them up!
Dianne, Please don't stop going to the thrift store for containers, you never know what great finds you can add to your collection!
Charming sign daff-nee LOL! Cool shades dude!
My dandilions are BIGGER than yours ..... na na na na na !!
Hey Blossom, have you got Apricot whirl???
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/976876/
The month of April is almost gone, and along with April, the last of my tree peonies are just about done blooming. This is my last one. From the coloring and growth habit, I think that it is a Kinkaku, or something very similar to that. The flowers are not presented prominently, but rather, faces downwards.
oh soilsandup that tree peony is absolutely beautiful! LOVE the colour/shading.
so delicate looking, it's breathtaking!
thanks for posting that pic. I'm going to enjoy it all day.
Whoa!! Those are beautiful!
wow what a fantastic thread.
I was attracted by the title of winter flowering & have followed you all from there...
as the Northern hemisphere heads into spring we down under are into autumn.
My garden is doing well as apart from a few frosty nights it has been mild.
In fact the last 3 days we have been having a mini heat wave.
26C max the other day & at least 24C today!
Looking at your amazing arrangements I am inspired to try my hand at a few.
Next step is to wander into the local Sallies store & look for some vases - I have one large one, I have a friend who is seriously into her floral art & when I commented that I had no vases she was horror struck.
So guess what she got me last Xmas...
now to fill it.
I did have a bowl that I never thought of using for flowers until somebody mentioned floating camellias.
And since I have some lovely white ones out right now.
You go girl! Awww man! Camillias! Something I cant do! Keep them coming..
Dalfyre...those are beautiful! Floating them in a bowl was a good idea... I wish I could grow something like camellias. They look so exotic and beautiful. Isn't that always the way? I always want to grow the things I cannot LOL
I'm way up in the northwest part of the US. We are trying to make spring around here.
Dianne that salmon color is beautiful, heads up or down can't lose with that one. How many trees to you have total? I just 2 a yellow and white. The white one's flowers are about 6-7" in diameter and are gorgeous. I'll cut one soon and float for you since yours are leaving for the season.
dalfyre - you have made a great start on arranging, they are lovely in that bowl. Keep looking around here at the cut flower threads you will get a wealth of ideas.
Thanks Drivenbonkers, Planti, Dalfyre, and Candee. That is a lovely tree peony, but you do have to go up to it and lift it's head to really get the full effect.
Candee - I have 6 tree peonies altogether (actually maybe only 5 since I moved my red one last year and it is still a sad looking stick with a two bits of live leaflets on it). I remember yours from last year - they were gorgeous.
Dalfyre - Welcome to this forum. I am so glad you found us. Your camellias are beautiful. It almost looks like a peony. And floating them in a bowl is a great arrangement. I like it that you are going into autumn. Would love to see what you have flowering in your part of the world as you go from autumn into winter. I am always on the lookout for plants that do well during the colder months of the year. My garden is getting pretty crowded, so I have to be focused and not be tempted to buy a bunch more plants, but am limiting myself to plants that bloom in the off season for me. Doesn't always work though LoL.
thanks for the friendly welcome :)
In my earlier post mentioned my friend who is really into floral art, she has been a big inspiration to me.
I have posted pics of her display at the Ellerslie International Flower show earlier this year...

Jan does lovely table arrangements for the RSA, it infuriates me to have to pick rubbish out of them each morning!
Why some people think it is ok to stuff their old eftpos dockets & raffle tickets into the arrangement is beyond me :(
Too lazy to take them from the table to the bin I guess.
My pic this time is not a very good one - I picked two roses & a camellia for the wreath laying on ANZAC Day.
the red rose is for my Grandfather, the white camellia for my Grandmother & the other rose is named Yours Always which I thought was an appropriate symbol of our family ties...
the ribbon is tartan to symbolise my husbands Scottish ancestry & the way past & present are brought together on this day & we are all bound together by love.
Well it made sense to me:)
Dalfyre - well, I learn something new everyday! I had to look up what ANZAC day is, and now I know. Those are lovely roses and camellia for the wreathlaying.
In the Chinese tradition, we also have a "gravesite cleaning" day in which people go to the cemetery to pay their respects and to clean up the gravesites. This year, it fell on the first weekend in April. One of the main reasons I grow cut flowers is so that we have flowers to take to the cemeteries on all the major holidays - something that my mom has done ever since we were kids.
I only have a few bearded irises - and this is the first to bloom.
Lovely Peonies Dianne and your Iris are a magnificant display! Very nice arrangement, full and well balanced!
Hi Dalfyre, Welcome! Your Camelias are so pretty, love the floating arrangement!
I remember Weedwoman telling us about ANZAC day last year. Thanks for sharing your wreath, it's Beautiful and respecful. Glad you joined us!
I too recall hearing of ANZAC day and you have arranged quite a lovely presentation. Is that a lovely little fuscia off to the left?
Dianne that is spectacular, those closed iris really set that one off and the colors really pop! Getting so anxious to get something to put in a vase just can't wait.
Hey dalfrye, and everyone, you can post your ANZAC wreaths and respects here ya know!! C'mon over and have a look!
All are welcome!

I think my favorite one there is the white lilies, with carnations and white roses, very soothing.
haighr, I love that! It is stunning~
Thank you blossom, sometimes it is the simplist things that turn out the best for me.
Very nice variety in size and shape of the flowers Candee! Love the elegant groupings.in your special 3 tier vase.
Thanks, the spiarea doesnt last long but it still looks good today and glad I did it cause it is still pouring outside here! We even turned the furnace back on to take the chill off today and I never run the furnace in May?
