Yard to vase - spring 2009 series

Christchurch, New Zealand

at least the white nerines know what time of year it is

agapanthus - known to our household as angry panthers...
white nerines & a fern frond in a vase my Mum painted as a gift for me.
to me the arrangement looks just a little 'off' - but I am supposed to be getting ready for work so no time to tweak until I am happy with it.
I'll do that later.

Angry panthers!! Thats a good one. That is about as cute as naked ladies! (Lycoris.. or otherwise none as surprize lily, reserection plant.. etc!!)

I dont have anything to show today here....but just had to add my silly 2c! The panthers BTW are gorgeous!

Christchurch, New Zealand

some of the Aussies know them as Aggies panties...
some of the older Kiwis do as well.

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

LOL, lovely and I was actually llooking for a panther !!! Thought for sure you would have one there!

Oh, btw, it is yard to vase so you must make something with them on this thread!!! LOL

Nice arrangement dalfyre, don't think it needs much tweaking, the flowers are beautiful. Love the vase your Mum painted, it looks good with your flower selection.
Lovely Aggies!

Dalfyre - I have never seen a white nerine before. You have a nice healthl full patch there! I have some pinks, but now I have to look for some whites too. They are one of the best plants for late blooming in autumn. Funny all the different names for agapanthus. The university where I work at started off as an agricultural college, and the name of the our school newspaper and the nickname for our students are "Aggies".

We had a rainstorm here on Friday that will rival Blossoms! Here is one of my peony patches before the rainstorm.

And here is the same patch after being beaten by a heavy rainstorm Friday night - at one time, we got 2 inches of rain in a few hours. Not a very pretty yard photo LoL,

But, it afforded me the perfect opportunity to include this peony in the yard to vase series. This is vase number 4 of my thrift store buys.

Speaking of perfect opportunities, the right time Finally came for me to pick the bird of paradise. I had 4-5 blooms this year, but they opened at various times. I wanted to keep the flowers in the yard as long as possible since it was planted by my front entryway. Here is the yard photo.

Sacramento, CA(Zone 9a)

The bird of paradise has about 4 potential blooms within each stalk. The oldest has it's last bud opening (after cutting off the earlier spent blooms) while the first bud in the youngest stalk is opening. I don't know if the other blooms will open after it is cut.

Oh how I wish I had bird of paradise here, but no way in this zone. They are gorgeous!

Lovely arrangements Dianne! What are the orange flowers in the 1st peony picture? Love orange and pink, it really zaps! You did really well with your thrift shop vases, they have all been really nice!
I'm so jealous of your BOPS!! they are stunning.

Sacramento, CA(Zone 9a)

Thanks Candee and Terri. Terri - the orange flowers are a kind of exbury azalea. That kind of azalea flowers first, and then it leafs out.

I just love those peonies!
I have a white & a red, the white has the most amazing scent but the red nothing.
I couldn't resist going back & tweaking my arrangement...
I like it now.
Can anyone even see the difference? :)

Peonies are lovely. But very short-lived.

The nerines last a long time though. Yes, I can see the difference. Nice job of tweaking!!

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

Yes dalfrye, I like the different heights, I actually prefer the tweaked one as it has a lot more character now that it has the height.
Sure hope to get some sunshine one of these days so I can make somethin

Sacramento, CA(Zone 9a)

Can't seem to catch my flowers recently at the right time for both the yard and vase series. I don't normally post two similar plants, but this year has been a wonderful peony year for me. These are my Sarah Bernhardts in the yard.

And later in a vase. I mixed in another variety - could be Mons. de Jules, but am not sure. The blooms only last about 3 days in a vase, but they make spectacular arrangements. And the fragrance is wonderful. Peonies are the flowers that garners the most comments from my co-workers.

Lovely colors. I have to get busy and post my tree peonies, it is out in full and I got some good photos of it. The wind and rain did a number on them yesterday least the white one.

Nice tweaking dalfyre!

I'm VERY jealous of your Peonies Dianne!!! Beautiful arrangement, absotuely gorgeous!
Thank you, I'm taking them home. lol!

Hurry up with your Peonies Candee, don't want them blowin' away before we see them....

Christchurch, New Zealand

Did some gardening on Sunday & noticed my peonies are starting to come up.
seems bit early yet, might have to mulch them with leaves to prevent frost bite...
we still have winter to get through.
Sunshine & hail today, weird!

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

I have the photos Terri, just havent gotten around to posting, but will soon as you just won't believe how gorgeous they are if I don't mind saying so myself LOL! Plus they made it through the wind and rain this go around and last night's frost!

Wow, they look like sparklers on the 4th. of July! Very cool!

Thanks candee, I have cleared away so much grass, seemed a shame not to make something with some of it. lol.

Sacramento, CA(Zone 9a)

I like that philosophy - kind of like when life gives you lemons, make lemonade.

Terri - you can take any flowers you see here home anytime. HMMMMmmm- I just remembered I got those peonies still in the refrigerator. Better take them out to see.
Dalfyre - did your peonies survive the frost???

Christchurch, New Zealand

So far so good...
we have been having cold wet windy days & nights so no more frosts yet.
I need it to dry out a bit so I can rake the leaves to use as mulch.
I just spotted new growth, it is either anemone or ranunculus.
Time will tell :)
So exciting to see tiny green shoots peeking out.
And my daffodils are just breaking the surface.
The tazetta narcissus are already up & on track for early spring flowers.
And the nemesia have survived the first frosts, hail & wild, windy weather & are still flowering!
I don't know how low a temperature they will survive but they are so incredibly easy to strike from cuttings that I think any who get real winters with snow & all could bring them inside in pots & then replant in spring time.
Do you get the impression I am impressed by these plants ? ;)
I love them

Sacramento, CA(Zone 9a)

Dalfyre - looks like I definitely need to get some of those nemesias.

These yellow/orange alstromerias are the most productive ones that I have seen. My sister gave me some starts about 5 years ago, and they are going to town.

Had enough to take to work......

and some for home...

Thumbnail by soilsandup
Sacramento, CA(Zone 9a)

And I even took some to the cafe. I am trying something new this year - I dug a trench around the alstromeria, and putting plastic netting around it to keep it from spreading. I am getting tired of it taking over the flowerbed and my having to dig up the area periodically to discard the excess.

I like larkspurs - this particular one self-sows itself every year. This patch is about 3-4 ft tall - it germinated really early in the season. Most of the other ones are about 2 feet tall.

Thumbnail by soilsandup
Sacramento, CA(Zone 9a)

Here it is in a vase by itself.

Thumbnail by soilsandup
Sacramento, CA(Zone 9a)

Then I paired it with the ubiquitous alstromerias The rocking bench behind the flowers is one of my favorite places to eat dinner during the warmer time of the year.

the larkspur & alstromeria look great together.
My Mum has been trying to eradicate the same kind of yellowy one from her garden.
Started out as a gift but she had no idea how invasive it would get.
We had only ever seen the red & green one & that spreads quite slowly.
I have seen some nice dwarf ones for sale & have been tempted...
They are calling those Princess lilies.
the pic is where I moved my nemesia to, the tazetta narcissus is popping up even where I thought I had dug it all out.
I gave away masses of bulbs & have heard that they are coming up.
Someone may get a surprise bonus, some of the bulbs were daffodils that I forgot were there.
I really hope they were in the stuff I gave away or replanted - not the pile I consigned to the green waste bin.

Thumbnail by dalfyre
Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

I don't have much interest in the alstromeria but lett me know how the netting works as I could try doing the same with my spiderwort.
Love the larkspur and it is spreading for you, how great is that? I have planted that many times and it never returns in my gardens.
dalfyre that is a lovely bed shown there.

london England, United Kingdom

Lovely Alsromeria arrangement Dianne!
Candee doesn't have any interest in them (she said that about yellow once)! We shall have to do something about that.
Your arrangement with the Alstromeria and Larkspur looks gorgeous, those colours look so good together.
I bought a couple of larkspur from the lottie shop, but I haven't got around to planting them yet and noticed there is only the stems left!! the slugs have eaten the rest. Good idea with the trench and netting, hope it works for you!

Pretty flower bed dalfyre.

Shall I cut my foxglove??
