Weird Weather of '09!! ....... #8

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Shelly, that second picture has a very surreal quality - so much depth - and so many layers and shadows. Nice job. Were you up there already or did you hike up to take pictures? Too bad you can't get a job photographing sites for the state or county. How cool would that be?

Very cute, Trisha! How nice that you provided good weather for them!
Portland, that is a friendly being. Just look at the eyes.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

He is a friendly Troll who helps look after the Fairie Babies.....actually a very sweet little guy.

Thanks All!

I sure hope that everyone feels better soon too!!! What ever this bug is that's going around really seems to take it's sweet time. At present all I have left of the crud I had is some minor sinus stuff and one of my ears still has a little fluid, but it's nothing compared to two or three weeks ago.

Katie, I would love that job! It would be my ideal, dream, surreal, job! The purpose of the jaunt out to the vantage point was multipurpose really. For one, I was figuring that there might be an interesting view from there. For 2) i'm prone to embolisms and the commute is killer (as you well know), so I have 3 or 4 spots that I pick from every day to stop and walk around for a few minutes. It's a walk that's a little over a 1/4 mi. each way. That one is my favorite though, so I'm usually there a few times a week. It amazes me that so few people ever to there though since it's plainly visible from the highway and there's a great pullout for it. As of yet, I've never passed anyone on that walk, but due to the beaten path I kno that a few others must take it too!!

Trisha that door is very cute! Great job!!

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Smart girl, you are, taking measures to prevent embolisms. Eeek. And fitting in a walk every day. Good thinking. Envision that job and keep looking for it - I'll be it's out there. Maybe check at OSU in the forestry or ag departments and/or gran programs . . . I can so see you doing something like that.

*Uh, that would be the "grant" programs (in forestry, or environmental studies, or agrictulture). I know the EPA contracts some of its work out to OSU. When my friend called to report and incident from the use of Frontline on her dog (it turned out to be something else), the hotline she called was at OSU. Government funding is supposed to be for more and more green jobs.

We're having snow in the mountains right now. Eeek.

That's A good idea Katie. I'll have to look into something like that. It's been a while since I've spoken with folks at OSU, that could be fun. I walk several miles a day. The short walk is just to break up the commute a bit. After I first had a run in with the emboli, they wouldn't release me to commute to work unless I stopped every fifteen minutes and walked around for five min. That used to drive me nuts because it really drug out the commute, but it may be the only time that I've listened to my doctor that closely! Anyhow, I only stop once in the middle of the trip now, but over time I've grown used to it and it's sort of refreshing unless the weather is really bad.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Gardner.... I just heard on the news that you might get up to another 6" of the white crud between tonigt and tomorrw. I sure hope that doesn't pan out that way for you!

Ok, this will be the last of my cat for a while, but I just had to show this one because I had mentioned up above that I couldn't get her to look at me when I took the picture. Today I finally did.

"I'm looking......are you happy now"!!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

lol. yep, that's it! Actually, she doesn't really know or understand what wind is, and it was windy today. When she ventured out it had died down, but as she was about 5 feet from the door it gusted and freaked here out. At first she just froze, then she bolted into the house with hair standing up. I couldn't help but laugh. She then stood at the door for a few minutes and decided to brave it again when it simmered down. So, that's why she looks a little stressed or peeved maybe.

Eugene, OR

Waiting for it to happen again. lol Gretchen got out today, went about 3 feet from the door, started crying and bolted for the door! She gets jealous when I feed the outside one, but doesn't like it when she gets out. Funny kitty!!
I keep telling her she doesn't know how good she has it. She wanted an extra long brushing tonight, so maybe thats her way of her own attention.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I'm positive that's why the extra brushing! I'm certain that most indoor cats have no clue what the elements are really like. However the outdoor ones do seem to realize that indoor is the way to go. My stray stands near the windows looking in and bats at the door or window when one of my indoor cats goes by.

Eugene, OR

Oh, yeah. Mine 'talk' throught the screen of the sliding door all summer. But winter time, it's just batting at the door. I don't feel too bad for her, she still has a heat pad in the garage (which she uses). I think she comes up for company, because we're not outside as much in the winter, she's a constant companion when I'm out. Dh wants me to let Gretchen go out in the snow, but I like the idea she's afraid of going off the deck. I'd never be able to catch her outside. The coyotes are just too close (they've come into the yard more than once), that's why we put in a kitty door for the stray to get into the garage.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Funny how they seem to think that we just absolutely know what they're saying to us. I think that you're definitely right about not wanting Gretchen off the deck. Especially, if she always been an indoor cat and doesn't have "street smarts" when it comes to being outside. If she's anything like mine, she thinks that every creature is nice and that every cat must be a friend. That's just not so!

Eugene, OR

Yep, that's Gretchen. She loves everything and everybody!! Pookie on the other hand bolts for the safety of 'under the bed' at the first sound of anyone coming. Sometimes all people see is a blur, but most times she's already long gone. LOL

Bewitching hour is here again. Try to stay dry tomorrow, they're still saying it's going to be nasty.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Ohhh yuck. Thanks for the heads up. I guess if it doesn't snow, I'm ok with it!

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

Morning everyone,
Well it seems as though DGD also has Staff Infection in her blood, so they're keeping her in the hospital and hitting her IV with a bolus of anti-biotics every couple of hrs to try and knock it out of her. They think it may be an absess in the muscle that's causing the Staff. I spoke with DD last night and she said the nurse was just getting ready to pull the IV around noon so she could be discharged and the Dr came in told them to stop and informed DD of the Staff. I spoke with her this morning and she said our DGS still has a fever and is coughing alot. Both of these children suffer from Asthma as well. Will it never end.

TTYL,

Susan105

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Oh, my! Will certainly be praying for them. Hopefully the antibiotics do their trick. HUGS

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Susan, I'm so sorry to hear that. I'll keep them in my prayers. Staff in your blood is NOT good. But I'm glad they identified it and have jumped on it quickly.

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

Thank you! Me too!
Susan105

(Judi)Portland, OR

Susan, hopefully the meds will do the trick and she will be home again soon. It's so difficult when kids are sick. Sending good thoughts.....

Red your cat looks so fluffy and sweet. How old is that cat? She's a beautiful color. My two old cats are not aging well at all! They do go out in the yard and poke around for about 20 minutes and then they are back in again. One of them is especially lazy and wheezes a lot - she's had films taken and several exams and has been on steroids but that is not a good long term solution. The vet and I both think that at 16 she might not have a lot of time left. She seems happy enough and eats ok so we'll just carry on. The other one is the same age and still spry and playful.

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

Thank you Judi. I know, now they think that the Staff could have come from her skin when they drew the blood so they're running a new test as they now think it could be bone infection because of her back situation. They're going to do an MRI this afternoon. Like I said, will it ever end???!!!!

Susan105

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

Wishing you serenity and good outcomes.

(Judi)Portland, OR

Wow Susan it sounds like things are serious. Is she in a good hospital? Let us know how the MRI goes. Does she live in Bend?

Eugene, OR

Susan, so sorry the kids are still sick, especially the DGD. Keeping you all in my prayers. And please do let us know.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

I got my MRI on my knee today. They decided to do one on my knee to see what was up with it. I'll find out the results later this week.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I sure hope that MRI reveals good news for you Laura!

Susan, I sure hope that everyone and especially DGD are better soon. How is your DGD now?

Willow.... are you better yet? hopefully!

Portland, Precious is 9 yrs. old as of just recently. I've had here for right at a year now. she's very curious, playful, and always up to something new and different. Which I hope is a sign that she has many years left since I didn't have her until she was 8! My cat that passed away about a year and half ago, wheezed for several years. They never could find a cause for it and just said "old age" I think that she did that for about 4 years before she died. Other than that she slept quite a bit, but seemed in good health. So hopefully your kitties' situation is similar. My other cat currently is 18yr. and seems to be healthy. Every time she sees a new vet (for routine stuff) they're always surprised when I tell them how old she is and will check her charts! She lounges much more than she did several years ago, and doesn't go outside anymore when the weather is bad (she's always been an indoor/outdoor cat), but other than that she's seems ok. Getting Precious was the best thing for her after the other cat passed away. They're not good friends at all, in fact senior kitty swats and bats at Precious all the time, but Precious has so much hair that she doesn't hardly seem to notice and still thinks that they're friends! But Senior kitty spends a lot of time trying to figure out what Precious is up to, which has been great for getting her out of her bed!

(Judi)Portland, OR

Red - Precious the Black is doing well - I will try to remember to take a photo today. I worked all day in the yard yesterday but forgot to take any photos. My nameless gnome is sitting in the garden still without a name and I want to take a photo so you guys can suggest names for him.

Susan how is your DG doing?

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

Hey gals, go check out my garden tour on 'Spring in my garden' thread

(Judi)Portland, OR

Red - This is Precious the Black - doing well and has another flower opening up.

I'm posting a photo of my new gnome on the gnome thread so please come up with a good gname for him!

Precious the Gnome is very cute.

Eugene, OR

rc.....I think you're right, that young one is probably keeping the senior kitty going! Remarkable age, mine have made it to their teens, but not that far. I lost 4 in the first five years we were here, but they were all 15 to 16. Now we've started over. LOL

(Judi)Portland, OR

I just can't call the gnome Precious - that would emasculate him!

Eugene, OR

LOL He can be precious, but not a Precious imho.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

lol...I agree completely Sally!

Portland... have we seen this gnome? I look up in the thread. Precious the black is looking great! There doesn't seem to be any signs of transplant shock at all! It must really be liking you!! It's a little soon to tell for certain, but it looks as though it might be going to set seed!!!

Sally, that's must have been so hard to lose 4 of them in 5 years. I'm don't know if I could take that! I still think about the one that passed away a year and half ago, every time I pass by one of her favorite spots in the garden. She made it to 19. It amazes me to think the she and senior kitty actually grew up with me!

Willow I love your thread. I'm still looking through it, but so far it's great!!

Eugene, OR

That was hard for sure, especially my Kiki, still hard to think of her. She was Himalayan, very special friend.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

What a beautiful cat she must have been! Cute name. They're definitely good pals.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

My Lady, my senior kitty, came outside for a little bit early this evening. I took the picture from where I was standing, knowing that it wouldn't be that good. I knew that I soon I I stepped close to her she'd bolt thinking that I was going to make her go back inside. Sure enogh, as soon as I go close enough to take a decent picture, she took off around to the back.

Eugene, OR

Now that is one good looking cat!!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

she is saying .... 'oh, thank you, but really, thank you!' Her name, My Lady, really fits her. Other than the fact that once in a while she absolutely loves to roll in dirt (what's up with that anyhow?) she's definitely a bit of a drama queen.....even at the age of 18!

Eugene, OR

Is it dirt she's rolling in or something planted there? Being inside kitties, the only thing mine roll in (or on) is catnip.
