Weird Weather of '09!! ....... #8

(Judi)Portland, OR

Anyone who wants cuttings let me know. I already have Trisha and Laura on my list. And please, postage is on me. it gets too crazy to do otherwise and some of you have already shared seeds and plants with me and for that I am grateful. :)))

This is a photo of the mother rt dogwood during the winter. It is the bare shrub to the right of the wire cage thing. The red color of the branches is a lot more pronounced than in the pic.

A pic of "Precious the Black" now at home among other hellebores. She is named after Red's cat.

I forget which thread we talked about giving woodruff a haircut but this is a pic of all the little woodruff babies - I cut it back about a month ago I think. The babies are everywhere!

Well let's hope they root! When we get to that stage I will ask for best ways to package them for mailing. But don't tell me yet - my brain has reached maximum capacity and is filled with trivia. I am trying to download it to free up some space...

Laura - for you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2csnVNai-o

A friend of mine, Joyce Chin, is a graphic novel artist and posted this on her Facebook page. I thought of you.

The plant trading forum has a sticky post with mailing tips. I recommend that you use a poster tube. Arbor day sends their twigs in regular mailing envelopes. But don't read this now, come back to it later. LOL

Eugene, OR

Judi...can I be added to the list please? And thank you for the offer. Nice pictures, Spring is almost here. I love the blue wire thing too.^_^

I will trim my red twig dogwoods and the Hakuro Nishiki Dappled Willow and get them started for the Roundup. I can put your name on one, Tills, if you want. I already have 3 of the Willows potted up.

(Judi)Portland, OR

Lynn have you done the dogwood before? How do you do yours? Info please!

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

I did a dogwood by accident. My grandson put a broken twig in a pot of dirt, along with a hydrangea branch that had broken off, and wouldn't you know it, both are doing fine. The dogwood cuttings that I babied kicked the bucket. I was just reading about them in my propagation book, and it said that hardwood cuttings taken in late winter work best. Just put them in a pot of soil, don't let them dry out, and keep them in a sheltered place. I put the willow cuttings in a pitcher of water, and they rooted like crazy. I just potted them up yesterday, so we will see if they survive the transition. Propagation and seed sowing is new to me, I find it fascinating and very addictive.

Katie, that's pretty cool; thanks!

Laura - I guess there's a whole album. Don't know how much of it is on youtube.

Willow... what's up with that rhody blooming now? was it in greenhouse or is it just confused? Anyhow that's a really nice specimen.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Great pictures Portland! Of course you can guess which is my favorite. :-p I really like that combination of hellebores. Is that Hellebore foetidus "gold bullion" with Precious the Black?? it's a striking combination!

(Judi)Portland, OR

That is gold bullion next to Precious the Black. They make a cute couple! :)
I'm off to Rockaway Beach for a few days - taking Koka to play on the beach.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Have fun!!!

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

Ditto!!!

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

RC that is a picture from last year. 'Lem's Cameo' my favorite.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I really suspected that it was Lem's Cameo, also one of my favorites, but that really confused me because it's not supposed to bloom now. So, that makes much more sense!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Portland, I forgot to mention..... Precious stood up to say "thanks!" You and Koka have fun at the beach!

I thought this was cute. I let one of my cats come outside for a little bit today. She's strictly in indoor cat, and was raised that way by her prior owner. But every now and then I let her out onto the porch or sidewalk, but only if i'm going to be within eyesight of her because she's comepletely clueless about "outdoor life." Anyhow, I thought that this "situation" is the perfect example of why her visitation to the great outdoors is supervised.

I've watched her do this 3 or 4 times now. The funny part is that she doesn't even have to think about how to do that, or hesitate to. She walks right up to the railing and, without even pausing, turns her head sideways, takes another step forward and through the railing, then stops and turns her head straight so that she can stand there and look around. Same darn thing in reverse to get back out. She doesn't even try to back out without turning her head.

Olympia, WA(Zone 7b)

What a beautiful kitty! Smart girl, turning her head :0)

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

Pretty cat. I like the orange ones. They generally have nice personalities. What's it's name?

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Thanks! Her name is 'Precious' . Yes, she definitely has a really sweet temperment. kids can mess around with her and she'll either stand there and take the punishent (until I notice the kids :-p ) or she'll just walk away. then on top of it she's really curious.

Everyone must be outside today working in their gardens. I almost went out but my feet are cold today. Just finished Mauve Binchey's newest book. Pretty good. Now reading an outer space series by Anne McCaffery. Sounds like it will be good too.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I'm at work.

I've heard that Mccaffery's newest is a pretty decent one.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

If you like to read we have a fantastic group of writers here on DG.....check out these two stories!!!!!

I'll have to check that out closer, looks like a curl up for a good read kind of thing. Anne McCaffery started an outer space series? I'll have to start looking, I've got all the Pern series. I thought she was going to slow down on her writing after she got her son going.

Had a very wet morning, not showers, not rain....
...buckets of rain for a good hour, then just rainy damp all afternoon.

Sis sent me this link, if you like dolphins, check it out. Fascinating...and something to watch on a rainy day.

We are supposed to have rain tonight or tomorrow, it must be heading this way.....

Eugene, OR

It was a really good downpour and it was worse when we went into town.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Guess we should go bring the mattress in from mom's patio.....it's covered, but if we get any wind it will get awfully damp.....She got Sage a beautiful bed at a garage sale today...white metal frame with Hearts.....just have to get it moved to their new house tomorrow....birthday gift a month early...

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

What a fun gift for Sage!!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

What a great gift!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

ok...... which of these two pictures is the better picture? Or neither of them? I'm working on cleaning up and organizing my pictures, so I'm not going to keep both as they're so similar.
