Coffee Break # 7 Spring is in the air!!

Thomaston, CT

I have an area to clear with lots of brambles, & woody stuff---guess you can't lasgana it until that's cleared off--oh, well. Great games, Dave47---I hope the run continues. Sorry about the neighbors, Drumlin. Call Mayor Chatfield to com-plain---unless it was his house? I grew up in East Mt.---used to hike all the way out to the Dairy Bar---our parents never knew! Still have a best friend in Prospect.

drumlin sound likes my old white trash neighbors...but they never had parties just sold drugs and I had NO problem calling the cops on them. Glad we finally moved.

There is a wonderful scent coming from somewhere, what is blooming now that I'd be smelling?

Hi Y'all Spring is coming. The fig tree leaves are out, so are the persimmon leaves. Even the grape vines have a few leaves. And the buds on the pecan tree are swelling. The temp have dropped down to the 40's, but it is still nice. I went out an bought a bounce of plants.

This is a amaryllis that we have had over 40 years. Survived the freeze out side.

Beautiful wren!!!!! I love the striped ones and the fact that it's that old is even better!

My cactus is blooming again, it's confused.

One of mine is also. We keep giving away bulbs and they keep multiplying. I have others all seem to have survived the freezing.

And too wet to play ball .... "

What has playing ball got to do with the cold air?

Has anyone had a red- breasted nuthatch this year? Haven't had any come down here for awhile, but I'm thinking maybe Pixie would have them. They are very cute--not as large as the white -breasted.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I had Red Breasted Nut hatches all winter. soooo sweet.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

I've never seen red in my neck of the woods. Once in awhile I see a white.

Great links Jen & GE!!

A kid that was in our Peer Helper program has co-created a website where people from all over the world can jam. He was on The Cobert Report a couple months ago.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Not here yet but I had a visitor today that was red and not a Cardnial either.
My new visitor is a male Pine Grosbeak .

Sorry about the 'green', but i'm looking through my plant stand AND a glass sliding door. Every time I walked up to snap his beautiful red head he would fly away. I must have 5 shots of his butt!

The finch has started to turn his beautiful bright yellow also.

If you take an old pie plate and 3 kinds of bird food to make a smorgasbord, they WILL come!

This is hilarious - I voted for him! They'll never make that mistake again.

HA! I sent that First Dance link to my daughter. Maybe she'll come up with some moves by June! I had no idea until a few months ago that Goldfinches actually stuck around in the winter but went incognito.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I had tons of Goldfinches last Sept. and bought 100 pounds of food for them and Chickadees.
No sooner had I emptied the first 20 pound bag but they thinned out for the winter, now they are back along with RosyFinches and Cardinals, they sure hose thru the feeder fast.
The females are their regular color but males are turning too.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

house & gold finches just started clearing me out this week... looks like we are getting more and more every day

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

must be migrating.
i also hear a song sparrow every morning.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I put out a new nyjer seed feeder Sunday evening.. I guess 18 inches long... the thing is more than 1/2 down already... either the squirrels or grackles wrecked my other two finch feeders.. but it was my own fault the mix had peanut parts in it

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Peanut anything drives the squirrls mad.
soon as my battery recharges I'll send a pic of my finch + chickadee feeder

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

the one feeder is on a shepherds hook and not the sturdiest thing either... Randy put a bucket on the pole so they can't climb up... but I spotted one jumping on it yesterday... the whole thing was bonging around.. guess he isn't worried about falling a few feet

Thomaston, CT

I'd love to see a pine grosbeak----have seen a white-winged crossbill here---but only once!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I only saw grossbeaks once, they were yellow and greygreen

I had a flock of say 100 of them come in once, ate me out of seeds. They looked like a parrot

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Just to get you laughing'

A Doctor was addressing a large audience in California ...

High fat diets can be disastrous, and none of us realizes the long-term harm caused by the germs in our drinking water. But there is one thing that is the most dangerous of all and we all have, or will, eat it. Can anyone here tell me what food it is that causes the most grief and suffering for years after eating it?'

After several seconds of quiet, a 75-year-old man in the front row raised his hand, and softly said, 'Wedding Cake.'
