Nice to see seeds germinating.
Coffee Break # 7 Spring is in the air!!
that's nuts
the cops almost arrested my grandmother... she had a lot of poppies (that she smuggled here from Poland)... one of the neighbors blew the whistle on her.. BTW she had a still in the basement making shine during prohibition ... makes me wonder
I think a few would be ok... a field of them might be another story
saw this link posted in the bird watching forum... live eagle cam.... and has eggs
http://www.wvec.com/cams/eagle.html
That blows my plans all to he-double toothpicks.
Poppies that is...I have that huge field and since we aren't doing any work in it this summer.....

:)
I used to drive a doctor to work I would leave the city at 5AM and pick her up 45 mins away. She had beautiful gardens and had a 1 gallon bag of poppy seeds.
There was extensive work being done on an expressway exchange with acres of dirt all smoothed off.
It was 5AM when I spread the seeds from the car.
I only saw 1 plant in July.I just couldnt believe it.
Oh, no----the poppies would have looked beautiful there! I spotted some pansies the other day---guess I'll succumb!
The poppies that make flowers are not the same, I thought, as the ones that yield heroin, unless you're watching The Wizard of Oz. On the other hand, I'd like to see what the heroin-growing poppy fields LOOK like. But I thought there was a difference. Otherwise you wouldn't be able to buy poppy seed at the grocery store spice aisle.
Heroin Poppy field....

It's really strange that we ( as gardeners) look at those pictures and 'OOOH' and 'AHHH' because we see a huge field of beautiful flowers.
The drug lords and addicts see money, millions of highs and NONE of the flowers beauty.

Its a long way from the field to someones arm. I just havnt the energy to make a distilled decoction of the juice and then deal with packing and shipping.
Heroine isnt made from the seeds.
Its made from the sap from the new seedhead before the head ripens.
I takes a lot of work to gather enough sap for a batch that would yield enough heroine to make the whole process worth while, I'm talkin pounds and pounds of sap gathered by slitting open the head and ooozing the sap out into a bag.
Lets not forget the field tempretures and working conditions.
Thanks wha. I think I will pot up Arnold and his his siblings in larger pots.
Just give me a good dose of the fermented juice of grape or fermented juice of hops, and that's enough for me. My poppy is poppin outside (pretty red one) AND my peonies are sticking there heads out ever so slightly to see if it's safe! The pansies are going to be lovely Robin. Did you stick with purple, or some other color? There sure are some interesting ones out there.
I planted peas today. It was a gorgeous day, after working in the yard went for a 10 mile bike ride, now I'm sitting with my feet up. Will go out to dinner soon, then crash.
Oh, man, does that sound like a perfect day or what? Um, except the 10 mile bike ride, although your area is so gorgeous I may not mind some huffing and puffing. Maybe. I raked the yard of all the little sticks, so at least the yard looks better.
Did I mention yet that I killed a peony last summer? (The guilt is really getting to me...) It wasn't definite until now, when it did not reappear, that it is definitely dead.
Awww, how did that happen? They seem to be either very hardy and faithful or very delicate.
one more WS container germinated

Yippee! Then maybe mine will....haven't seen anything in any of my WS jugs.
I kind of wish the journal wouldn't put the newest photo on the list... I would love to put update pics there but then I have to open the entry to see what the flower looks like... or keep putting the flowering photo at the end ... I even tried changing the date of entry... that didn't work
I was curious about the illegal planting subject. After googling, I found this - http://fdralloveragain.blogspot.com/2009/03/soon-illegal-to-grow-your-own-food.html . I tend to think it doesn't pertain to us home gardeners.
Thank you Anita. The media often just throws out a tiny piece of the real information just to get a rise out of people and increase viewer/readership for awhile . You really need everything to be in context. Even in context it's still silly, of course, but at least now we know more.
The bill is about controlling slaughterhouses. It is nothing to be worried about. When a website is named FDRALLOVERAGAIN it is obvious they are selling a point of view. No food gestapo, no interference with organic gardening. I'm pretty sure Rosa DeLauro (my congresswoman) likes organic gardening. This bill is about mad cow and the like.
Am sticking with maroon shades of pansies--look better with my tan house. Also I need them for my art class on Tues.---yellow watercolors are hard to work with, & unlike Jo Ann, I can't get that nice rich purple color on paper. Talking to my stepson vacationing in the Keys---wish I hadn't---he was telling me about all the great birds they've seen.
Yellow watercolor paints are hard I try not to use them.
I just read an article how coffee grounds will keep the snails & slugs away... I think I am going to try doing this by my containers that seem to attract them every summer... might as well give some to my hostas while I am at it
http://www.seattlepi.com/nwgardens/143052_lovejoy09.html
I've heard that before too. I keep saying I am going to try it and never seem to get around to picking up the grounds from the local Starbucks.
me too... I have always used my grounds on the azaleas and rodies ... my friends son works at a D&D he said he is going to save them for me ... nice thing is I can pick up some old horse bedding & coffee grinds at the same time... he has got piles and piles of horse stuff that's real old too... he told me just to give him a call in advance and he will break out the bucket loader for me... just load my truck right up with that black gold
:)
I use them for everything. Many just use them for acid-loving plants but they really won't have much effect on the soil pH. PH changes very slowly. Another great plus about coffee - draws earthworms big-time!
that's good to know Victor ... thanks
Good score on the aged horse manure. I just put my grounds in with the kitchen peelings and mix in the compost heap. I've been ripping up egg cartons and paper towel rolls and adding them as well.
Good tips---never thought of using coffee grounds---I should have---my 94 yr old Mom still composts everything! My source of horse manure left when my friend sold his horses---however, there is a riding stable just up the road a piece.
Very prettiful wren. Would you like to see a pic of snow? How about snow on evergreens? Snow burying cars? A luvly pic of snow swamping the bird feeder might be nice too. Drifts against the gate? ARGH!!!!! I said a REALLY bad word yesterday about this.
