Three little ones? Do you think he'll let any grow this year or has he learned his lesson?

"Yes, Virginia, there is a hummingbird" Good one Victor!

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Victor, Mom's family was from Minore, I forget the little town my Dad's parents came from other than that it was in the province of Naples. Intreesting. I believe all four of them came here single and married someone born in the same town in Italy after they were in CT.
I guess they hung to the familiar.

What was I thinking! I had SC as VA duh.......... Sorry Allison

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

that's ok... you confused me too... trust me i claim to be no expert with a map

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

Dave, have you visited Italy? I have been there several times, one of my favorite city is Firenzeits mega treasures of art and archtecture is nearly unbelievable.

As far as ancestry goes I am 100% Austrian.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

anyone ever grow hollyhock from seed... this pack of summer carnival says to sow anytime during 2 months before first fall frost.... don't these normally get done in spring??

Grew some last year from seed, planted them and they flowered.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

when did you put the seed down?

I started them in the GH in April. If I didnt have a GH I would start anytime.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

That's very interesting, Dave. Long way for a date!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I know they don't like to be moved... but that's what I thought... thanks

I am talking growing in a pot

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

ok... thanks

just found this... can be done in spring or fall... I will start some in the cow pots and see how it goes

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

After all danger of frost, sow in open ground well exposed. Cover with 1/4 inch soil. Thin when plants are a few inches high.

PLANTING INFO/DIRECTIONS

Excellent for backgrounds, screens, and tall accent groups. Highlight a front door or garden entry with their prominence. Can be planted in fall for bloom the following summer.

Fine if you want to do that. I want to put the plants in the ground so I know what I am dealing with. I guess its just a jump start.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I don't like to direct sow... I always end up pulling them thinking they are weeds

:)

City officials are sniffing around up at the top of my driveway. I am going to attack them now

Thomaston, CT

I have a brick patio near the hollyhocks---I"m forever pulling them out of the bricks, they reseed very well---I throw them away, because I have no room for them. But now that I've removed 2 huge roses, I guess there is room.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

Onewish, They are kind of biennials and they do a lot of root development , so lots of folks go with fall. Either works. Some say they are a short-lived perenial and it seems our Sherrie got them to bloom in their first year. Here is a link: http://www.wuvie.net/hockwhento.htm I grow them & let them reseed. I love them but I'm tolerant of their mold.

Maria, It is one of my biggest wishes to get to Europe/Italy but haven't done it yet. My DW always say we've seen Italy.France & Germany all in Disney World where you can walk from one country to the other.

NOOO. I went to Germany to visit my daughter while she was studying there, and then to Scotland with my Dad to visit his relatives and see his childhood homes one last time. The very air of Europe is different from the States. In Scotland I exclaimed out loud to my aunt how beautiful all the yards were, even in the not-so-nice areas. She was like, well, everyone grows flowers, don't they?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Nice flowers in Disney.

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

My daughter spent Christmas in Florence, her daughter is an art major and received a scholarship to study there for a cemester. I have been to most countries in Europe, also South America and Egypt, also seen many US States My favorite place here is the Northwest. I loved the UK, especially Scotland with its beautiful mountains.
