gardenpom - Gorgeous Red Poppy bloom! My poppies are getting attacked by something ... probably a rodent (rat). Gotta see about getting a live trap from Animal Control locally. :-(
All your MG vines and blooms are beautiful!
If I am not mistaken, the MG vines you've grown in past years has been I. purpurea. They are fast growing and produce lots of seeds. Small seeds that the wind could possibly blow around. I have never seen MG seeds in bird seed mixes. Sunflower, yes! MGs, no. So my guess is that they being blown and dropped in other areas of your yard. I am very leary of I. purpurea because of that. I have only grown a select few I. purpurea over the past 3 years and I am still pulling up seedlings every year. Not like what you have in your photo though, but I do find them in the most unusual places. It could be birds dropping them around, but I've yet to see a bird eating seeds from any of my MG vines. Maybe squirrels? But again, I've never seen that either. I bet it is just Mother Nature blowing or rolling seeds to other parts of your yard.
Added: Also, if you take down the dead vines every year and carrying them across your yard, the seeds from the pods could be dropping on the ground as you are walking along.

Becky, my new kitty has killed several rats since I brought her home. Had another one this morning. I have way too many rats here for a trap. Somebody near me was poisoning them last year, most days you could smell decomposing rats....
Oh gross!!! Poisoning the rats is NOT as option for me as I have other wild creatures that would eat the dead rats which would poison the predators, too. I need to live catch them and drop them off in an undeveloped area or drown them. (Though the latter thought is kinda daunting.) I have a hard time killing anything except Milkweed bugs and aphids and spider mites and wasps! LOL!
I worried about the poisoned rats last year also. I was afraid my cats or dogs would get hold of one that ended up in my yard.
Gardenpom, the picture here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=6335027
