A few months ago bluespiral and beckygardener each sent me some Morning Glory seeds so I could share pics of them here. This is the first one to bloom.
Spring Glories
Nice! The first photo looks like Rebecca I. purpurea and the second looks like Maisugata I. nil. Your Spanish Flag leaves are a little different than what the usual leaves look like, IMHO. Very nice!!! Congrats on some beautiful looking vines!
Thanks Becky. I'm really looking forward to the Spanish Flags, so glad they are doing well. I wonder why a few of the Morning Glories are not growing well. Do some do better some some climates than others? Anyway, I look forward to seeing what's blooming every morning, wish it would get light earlier so I could get good pics before work. With the time change I usually need flash on days I have to work.
gardenpom - I hear you about the time change!!!
I am still not sure that the vine you posted a photo of is Spanish Flag. The leaves sure don't look like it. Did you mark with an ID any of the seeds/vines when you planted them?
Yes, I did start two Spanish Flags, and these two look identical to each other and unlike any other Morning Glory I started. Time will tell. I did look at some pics of them and these leaves do seem different.

Nice blooms!!!! This one is Purple Flaked Japanese I. purpurea. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=6258316 I love that one, too! :-)
Becky, when I started the Glories, the Spanish Flag was the only one that I started more than 1 plant from. Every other Glorie was a single plant only. What I have should be Spanish Flag.
This one is way cool! http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=6258322
Hi gardenpom

Well, that's dissapointing.
I am glad you jumped in here, Ron. Thanks! I really didn't think it was a MG vine either and it does not look anything like a Spanish Flag. I, personally, have found Spanish Flag to be hard to germinate here for some reason. Usually the last MG to germinate in my garden. Not sure why it is so slow.
gardenpom - Before you rip it out ... and hopefully Ron will look again at your photo ... this isn't Blue Star MG vines is it? Those did grow quickly for me!
I don't plan on ripping them out anytime soon, but these two plants are not fast growers. I planted two seeds from the pack of Spanish Flag you sent me (in two separate pots). Two of these came up, which I assumed were as labeled. Could you have possibly mislabeled the packet? Maybe I planted the wrong seeds, grabbing another packet instead of the Flag seeds. Regardless, I will start a few more seeds tomorrow. Thanks.
Becky - I will reaffirm what I stated above

Polygonum convolvulus - trust me on this one"
I'm absolutely certain on what is shown in the photo including exact shape of the leaves, the exact manner in which the new leaves unfold at the tip of the stems ...but because it is a plant that is so very frequently mistaken for something in Convolvulaceae and often stumps even the 'experts' (please see the ID threads I linked to) , I have made absolutely sure that I know how to identify this plant...
Look through the threads that I linked to in the ID ...just about all the 'experts' on the ID forum disagreed with me and one even 'offered' to 'console' me on getting it wrong...but guess what it ultimately turned out to be...
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/202550/
The seeds are shaped like buckwheat seeds and don't look like Ipomoea seeds...
The cotyledons of the Wild Buckwheat do not resemble Ipomoea at all...
Closeup photos showing the very tip of the main and side stems that show the exact way the new leaves are developing and unfurling will certainly be enlightening...
This Polygonum grows on my property and when I see them I automatically recognize them and pull them out without the slightest second thought...
Gardenpom - There is no need to be disappointed on all that you posted because (as I had already mentioned) I thought both the Rebecca and the blue-purple flaked are outstanding examples and certainly would be an asset for a PlantFiles reference...
Are you able to post a closeup photo that would show the shape of the seeds that you are planting (?) where the Polygonum / Wild Buckwheat is growing...the Wild Buckwheat has an extremely wide distribution and is very commonly spread by wind, water and birds...
My suggestion is to remove the plant asap because although it is an annual...it reseeds and spreads very rapidly and you'll wish you did remove it...
You can alternatively allow the plant to grow ,which might be the best idea after all ,until you see it making the tiny flowers so that everyone here can be absolutely certain of what it is (just like what occurred in the ID forum) and then pull it...
TTY,...
Ron
Here is a crop of the Polygonum photo posted and there is a new stem proceeding from right to left in the center of the photo...the darkened furrow (which looks like a dark line) along the upper edge of the partially 'flattened' stem is typical of Polygonum as is the angle at which the new leaves at the tip of the stems are emerging and unfurling...
The plant will progressively produce more of these features visible on the newest growth...
Ron - Thanks! I can't even remember what MG seeds I sent gardenpom, but thought I might have sent her some Blue Star which might have been the mystery vine. You know your MG vines, so I know that you are right.
gardenpom - I can't remember ... what MG seeds did I send you? I can tell you with most certainy, that the seeds for this "weed" didn't come from me. I've never seen such a vine around here in my yard. Is it possible it might have been in the soil already? Or as Ron suggested ... the birds or wind or someother means of transporting may have brought these seeds into your garden. It happens, believe me! Sorry they aren't Spanish Flag vines. I hppe the seeds you planted for such do germinate and you get some SF vines growing this year! :-)
Sorry, I nursed these two along, they were planting at the same time I planted the seeds you sent. You sent me several packs, and I chose maybe four varieties to start the first time, including planting the two pots of what I thought were Spanish Flag. There is NO WAY these were in the ground, I planted them pots and all. I will keep these till I see the little flowers Ron suspects, then they will be removed. I started a few more of your seeds this morning, including two more Spanish Flags. I'm going to take a pic of the seeds.
Here is what's left of the Spanish Flag seeds. I have never seen that vine in my yard either, so it may remain a mystery. Becky, I hope you do not in any way think I am mad or blaming you. I am so grateful for your generosity in sending me the seeds, and look forward every morning to seeing what's blooming. By the way, you sent me Spanish Flag, Purple Flaked, Hot Pink Frost, Blue Tie DyedxFugi no Sora, Lady Yagurumas Kaleidescope,Kolkan, Mutant Blue Needle Leaf and Lavender Mist. Bluespiral also sent me several varieties.
gardenpom - Not a problem. Those seeds in your photo DO look like Spanish Flag seeds. The handwriting on the baggie is not my handwriting. (Though I may have just used a pre-marked empty bag to send them in.) If, in fact, they don't turn out to be Spanish Flag, let me know. I can share a few more seeds with you. I know the seeds I have ARE Spanish Flag. So not to worry!
I do have to tell you though, that I have several pots around my outdoor garden. You'd be surprised at what is growing in them. I have Myrtle starts in almost ALL of them. Apparently seeds from the Myrtle trees floated down into these pots! It's so funny! Many of these pots have weeds growing in them of course, too. Whenever I use commercial potting mix, I always get "extra" unexpected plants growing in the pots from their soil. LOL! Not that these are plants I want though...
Apparently, many of the potting soil companies don't bake/heat their soil to kill any possible stray seeds that may have gotten mixed in with the soil.

The 2 seeds on the right of the cropped photo that I have attached are definitely Ipomoea lobata...unable to determine identity of 'seed' (?) on the left...
Thanks for the info, Ron. Becky, I had these plants under a growlight till I planted them outside, they did come from my planting. It would be pretty unlikely for the two pots I planted with what I thought was Spanish Flag would both pop up the exact same weed. Had a beautiful bloom this morning, photo coming.

Gardenpom - This one here http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=6267611 is definitely Blue Tie-dye X Fuji no Sora http://davesgarden.com/community/blogs/t/beckygardener/9407/ It was incidentally a cross created by Antoinette (Gourd). Beautiful, isn't it? :-)
Did you label any of the other vines? I am not sure what the others are, except the Purple Flaked I purpurea. That one vine sure does look like Rebecca. Can you post a photo of the leaves?
As far as your Spanish Flag seeds ... all the seeds I sent you looked like SF. If you are getting something different, I can't explain it. So sorry if it is an invasive thug. I am interested to see the bloom on those vines. I've never seen that vine before. Always fascinating what comes from seeds. :-)
Yes, it is beautiful Becky. I'm not sure if I mentioned it to you, but I told Bluespiral I would not be labeling the vines or trying to keep track of them once planted. She just wanted me to send in the pics as they bloomed. I did label the containers before they went into the ground. I started 5 or six of her varieties and 5-6 of yours. Bluespiral sent me Rebecca seeds in her package.

gardenpom - I usually send 5-6 seeds of each MG cultivar. How many seeds did you plant and how many do you have left? Since what you planted originally was not SF seeds. If you have 3 seeds left in the baggie now after you just planted 2 more ... that adds up to 5. The original (thugs) probably didn't come from my seed baggie. Did you get seeds from some other source? A group swap? A trade? If this vine is really a thug, I can't imagine someone sending seeds to you. Eeeek! Do you have any enemies??? LOL! Just kidding!
There are so many different cultivars and endless types of crosses between MGs. I keep track of what seeds I planted and where in my garden or which pots because I just don't remember after planting so many different seeds. When I get a seed that has been crossed (and that happens a lot!), I usually only know the Mother vine cultivar. Then I try to guess by process of elimination who the father (pollen) might have come from. It's fun to play detective on the crosses! And boy! do I ever get some winners, too! Something you are going to have to try!
Could have been a mistake on my part, still four seeds there...but I am pretty sure that package had the largest number of seeds of any pack you sent. I only received seeds from the two of you. All the plants from you two are going along a eight foot fence I put up in the back of the vegetable garden. I wanted to keep them separate from the common ones I have coming up.
Hmmm ... I don't know if I would've sent you a lot of seeds of the SF because I didn't get that many seeds from the vine I grew this past Summer. I don't know. I just hope the seeds you just started DO turn out to be SF vines! Sheesh! I'm scratching my head on that one.
Do you have any idea what the label might have been on your bright pink blooming MG vine? I am wondering if it might be from me and might be a cross from either Lady Yaguruma's Kaleidescope or Kohkan. Are the leaves variegated or solid green?
Next time it blooms I'll get a pic of the leaves, Becky. You see, this was the reason I resisted getting seeds from all you wonderful people for so long....I am not a person willing to go to so much effort....I just want to enjoy the blooms!
Uh oh ... am I scaring you off? LOL! I sure don't mean to! I am glad that you are enjoying these new MG vines and we are all enjoying your photos! Thanks for starting this thread and posting all your terrific blooms! Don't ya just love this weather we are having currently?
I've got Poppy plants growing in my 3-tiered bed and they are going gang-busters! I can't wait to see what blooms I get on those plants. I am getting ready to plant a whole bunch of odds and ends seed in the beds around my back fence. I should have planted the seeds a few weeks ago, but I was worried we might get an unexpected cold front coming through. But the weather has been so nice, I decided I wasn't going to wait any longer. Tomorrow, I hit the fence beds! Whoo Hoo! Gardening is cheap therapy for me! :-)
