Garden photos of '09.....#7

Bill, that's great that you have that many volunteers coming up!!! definitely move them around and enjoy. I get a few volunteers from mine. I have recently found seedlings in the ivy patch, I now suspect that I've lost quite a few out there.... they don't stand a chance there!!

Sherrie, that's so neat that you can track hummers. I had no idea that such a site existed.

Jo Ann, I have some and have seen many, pulmonarias do fine quite close to hostas that are about their size and then they can still be seen. I think that under a hosta might a lost cause and I don't see many do well in that situation, but seedlings might come up under there!

Candyce, I bet that your hillside looked so pretty when all of the pulmonaria are in full bloom!!

Willie, yours are some tough plants. I bet that looks really neat though!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Thats a great idea Shelly thanks. I have so many hostas in all sizes in the only shade-part shade area I was wondering where to put pulmons.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I have some Hosta "remember me" and 'Dancing the the rain' right next to a couple of Pulmonaria Diane Claire. 'Diane claire' holds it own very well against those two hostas.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

i'm going to try it next to blue cadet hosta or mister watson

Essex Junction, VT(Zone 4a)

Why oh why did I click on this thread...and look at the pictures???!!!! We had snow yesterday, it is now mid 40s and all gone, but tomorrow is supposed to be high 20s. ::sigh:: so jealous at y'all's buds and blooms

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I have pulmonaria volunteers. I dig them up and plant elsewhere. I don't have any named cultivars - just the species longifolia.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i have some named varieties like raspberry splash and a couple others and my neighbor had it all over a section of their yard and gave me a few clumps - they did not know what it was - thought it was called moon flower - not sure what the volunteers are except free!

just moved the little guys last fall so i will see how they survived the winter.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I'll have to get a photo of that hill this spring with the pulmonaria on it. You'll see then that the hill is very overgrown with all kinds of stuff that makes the pulmonaria look like just another weed. Cultivate! Cultivate! I guess that will be my mantra this spring.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I have never seen any volunteers ... maybe because of the mulch... mine are raspberry splash

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

Victor I found my butterfly bush... guess I forgot I put those pictures in the plant files

beautiful huge blooms

Thomaston, CT

Some great photos, there, folks--thanks for sharing. Checked my hellebore today---no buds! Have not checked the perennial beds, but daffs are up by the garage---the purplish foliage coming up is now identifiable as allium bugaricum--I think. I did buy some other allium bulbs in the fall. Very jealous of that double crocus, DP!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Nice one, Allison.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

I went nuts last fall and planted all different allium colors sizes and hights so it should look good whent it all blooms

Essex Junction, VT(Zone 4a)

schickenlady - cool hummer migration map. boy they have a long way to go until they reach us

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Amazing how far they supposedly go in one day though. Sometimes I wonder about the reports.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

even longer to get to me lol and they stay all summer I am in the right place they dont just fly by they stay and I love those little buggers they are amazing

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Allison, I want that butterfly bush! What huge flowers on that! Amazing! I wonder if those would do well in Texas.

Yes, hummers are amazing and quite the characters.

Eevie.... sorry that you're still snowed in. Hopefully that will go away soon!!!

Victor, I love the species pulmonaria longifolia! There's not another plant that looks anything like it.

Bill, that's funny. Moonflower. it's a pretty plant no matter the name. Cultivar 'mrs. moon' has spotted leaves, 'moonshine' has a majority of silver leaves. However, I'm sure that they would have remembered moonshine, so it's likely mrs. moon.......a great ground cover too!

Candyce..... looking forward to that photo!

Allison, that's an awesome butterfly bush

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

at the time it was cheap... I think I payed $3.00 for it

http://springhillnursery.com/pink-delight-butterfly-bush-one-cent-sale/p/69536/

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

That price makes it even better! what size of plant did springhill send you? sometimes they're minute!!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

it was a tiny twig in a 3" pot ... what do you want for $3.00

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

a twig that lives!!! I've always had luck with bulbs from there. Not so much with the twigs though.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

it was hit or miss... I had that one thrive... and another bit the dust... when I first started the ads from there were very enticing.... I learned the hard way.... and now garden watchdog!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I agree completely! I learned the hard way as well! I wish that it hadn't taken me sooooo long to find the watchdog. However, if i didn't have so many moles and gophers, I would buy plenty of bulbs from them. they're small, but that's ok. I bought 50 or 60 acidanthera from them and they absolutely thrived for a couple of years, then something at them.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

But, at least for $3 apiece, if one died.... it's sort of like paying $6 for just one. And $6 for one that thrives is a really good thing.

Look who's finally waking up!

Thanks!

Very nice!! Lucky dog!

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Oh, Victor! I am so jealous. All our crocus and tulips are still under a lot of snow. Even the snowdrops haven't made an appearance yet. The weather is supposed to cooperate, and the sun is much stronger now, so as soon as the snowbanks melt back, I know I'll see the shoots.

I'm just too impatient!

Hee hee, I still have a 4 foot snow bank. I probably wont even get out of the stinking bed tomorrow. I dont like the looks of tomorrow!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks! As expected, they opened.

Spotted this - a branch from one of my mophead hydrangeas was buried under the soil a bit. It has now produced a baby. I'll cut it and pot it up.
