Onewish1, no I didn't get to the Springfest. I wanted to look for some coconut coir and maybe some garden art. But the entry fee was $11.00 - I thought that was rather steep to charge so I can go spend some money. It is just up the road but I've never been there before.
Antone else in NJ
Hey Cheryl...I used to live real close to you(Sayreville) A friend of ours works for Monroe Twp.
I had a dollar off coupon... it was steep... there was a vendor with huge blocks of coir... can't imagine how much that will expand to... this is my first year trying it... so far I like it
Onewish, do you remember whidh vendor? Coir is exactly what I'm looking for. I was thinking I could get it at D'Angelos which was in Andover but they have closed. They were a nursery I remember my whole life.
Hello again to all the NJ DGers, and all the others.
Nick
there is a d'angelos in newton....

the vendor was ag choice

D'Angelos has closed it's doors - that is the same place. If you have ever been down Newton-Sparta Road - it was across the road from the big red barn. Thanks for the link to Ag choice. I will see if a nursery down the road has the coir.
oh no.... I just found that place last year
:(
It was quite a shock. They had an auction but I didn't hear about it until it was all over. Our offices used to be in the red barn. Very interesting place to work.
I bet.. they were so nice they day I went up there.. must have been there over an hour just talking and looking at everything
I went to another nursery after work today - they had a for sale sign up. It looked like a tornado had gone through the place. Very sad.
have you ever gone to Morris County Farm in Denville... it's a great place

Here's another place in Jersey that I love, Pittsgrove farms..I think that was the name. Specializes in Iris, DLs, and peonies. I can't wait to visit in a month or so (or 2 months or so). Should be very pretty
Where are they located?
Pittstown

That's not far from a nephew and niece. Pretty country.
I seemed to have derailed this thread with my search for coir. Sorry Nick.
Onewish, I really should have gone to the Springfest late on Sunday to see what was left - I wonder if they would let me in without the fee. The place that sells the coir doesn't have any retailers at the current time. But they will sell directly to me. They are on 206 in Andover - right between home and work. That should work out very well.
check the prices in the market place... can't hurt to look at the prices

Thanks, I think BocaBob has the best price there. I hope to get a good price without shipping. This is the same place you got yours. I am going to call the place tomorrow.
I went to the sawmill and got the coir. It is a 12X12X6 block. What an interesting business. They started out supplying farms with sawdust as bedding for large animals. The manure piles that the farms have are now not allowed because of the seepage into the water table. So now they take the manure away and have a farm where they compost it. They mix the coir with the compost and sell it. They have a very large water trough full of hydrated coir - I really wanted to get my hands in it. I got a nice little education on the company. They are working hard to be green.
Now I just need to get myself organized and get some seeds started.
that's great... how much were they?
$8.00 plus tax. I thought she said it weighed one pound but it certainly weighs more than that. Right now they have no retailers that carry it for them.
wow good price... what's the name of the place?
It is Fischer & Son Sawmill, 714 US Hwy 206, Andover http://www.familysawmill.com/index.html

I sent an email to http://www.ag-choice.com/ and spoke to Jill. She is the person I met in their office yesterday. If you are heading north on 206 they are on the left just a little past Andover. They have some carved items out by the road. You drive in the dirt driveway and there is a trailer on your left - that is the office. The coir is in a shed up the hill a little bit. I think they are trying to develop some more farming/gardening related products.
It says in the Ag-choice brochure that I took that each block is equivalent to 2.5 cubic feet of material. They aren't shrink wrapped - she put mine in a bag. I am sure I can get some cheaper somewhere but I think I will spend my money locally. I was trying to figure out what was cheaper. BocaBob had the same thing in the Marketplace for $9.95 plus shipping which is an excellent price.
I wish they were closer to me. I drive up 206 a lot, but not past Rte. 70!
It is a small famliy owned business and as of yesterday they have no retailers that will carry it.
thank you... I actually think I know the place once you said carvings out front... I will check it out for sure
I just wanted to pop in and say Hi. I moved away from Jersey many moons ago but my heart is still there--so is all of my family. Most of them are scattered around Cumberland county.
I just lurk here because I like all of the friendly people. Please, post pics! Jersey is a beautiful state.
Velnita, where in Cumberland County? I live next door in Salem County.
And I live IN Cumberland County.
Bridgeton, Carmel, Vineland, Millville, etc.
I grew up in Hopewell. My dad grew up in Stow Creek.
Most everyone but me stayed in the area. I went back to visit in December but I don't get to go back often enough. I love seeing everyone.
And I miss Tastykakes. Good pizza and real cheesesteak subs too.
Edited for typo

We lived in Washington State for awhile, and we really missed things like subs, Italian sausage, and scrapple. On the other hand we had all the fresh salmon and scallops we could ask for! It's always a tradeoff, isn't it?
Marie gorgeous yard....we've done the whole wide angle garden thing awhile ago....I need to find my file for them will post pics later
Do you stock up on Tastykakes when you get 'home'? They are good aren't they? Oh and good cheesesteaks and pizza, too.
beautiful Marie!
We've only been here 4 years so I haven't had a chance to do a lot yet.
This is one of the gardens from scratch I transplated all the asiatic lilies from the front to here and next to the house. Also a mini rose bush from the front to here and added some other minis also planted lambs ear, mini daffs, foxglove and potentilla...I then spread around some marigolds and zinnias in there for some summer color.
