I love to do counted stitch needle work. I find it very relaxing. I also like basket weaving, though I haven't done that since high school, I'd like to do some more. Here is one of the baskets I made. I'm getting into clay, but I'm not very good yet. I think my best skill is my leather work.
Gnomes, Fairies and other garden friends
What amazing artists there are here. I wish I had artistic abilities but alas I don't......
I am a great collector of things to start projects with but I never seem to finish them.
That's my problem too, I'm a dabbler in most of my arts.
Thank you everyone! Beautiful basket Laura, I wanted to try that too, just isn't enough time. I did leather and copper work in high school, liked that too! I dabble too!!
That is so cute. Now I have to make a little gnome and fairy garden. Where do you get the accessories, such as the cute little picnic table?
That is adorable!!
Tills....most nurseries are starting to carry the clear pots now. If not I'll send you one.
Thanks Lynn, My DH made them :o) He's working on a ini arbor for me now lol!
great gnome garden!
Oh my gosh, that will be such a great addition to the gnome garden. I now have gnome envy! That is a complement considering I was the one who never cared for them. I am now a convert! Your gnomes have such a happy home. Did your DH make the signs also? You guys are very creative.
I feel sorry for my naked non-live creaturelss yard.
You guys almost embarassed me into buying that silly spinning lawn turkey at Fred Meyer the other day..
Until I saw the price... $29.99
That's a lot of daylilies.....
Hey.. Will a scarecrow keep deer away???? I got some old clothes and hats.....
Ginger
Lynn - there's a ton of stuff on the Internet. Here are a few sites:

http://www.gnomegarden.net/
http://www.fairywoodland.com/
I had a friend in grade school who would make little scenes out of things she found around the house: thread spools, milk cartons, etc. These always remind me of her.
Lynn LOL I felt the same way about gnomes and such but I finally got my Oliver! He is made of concrete so is stone colored and not one of the bright ones. Well I'm sure he's bright intellectually because he knows when to sit there and look cute but keep his mouth shut. i've grown rather fond of him and may find him a companion some day.
"Well I'm sure he's bright intellectually because he knows when to sit there and look cute but keep his mouth shut."
Is he married?
Ginger
No he is single but so am I so we are shacking up together.
Gnomes like shacks....

Ginger, try a stick with metallic streamers for the deer. I'm going to try that and see what the outcome is.
In some cases, planting lots of lavendar and rosemary will make the deer choose a different location. I know most animals don't like the smell of citrus, so you might try a citrus-based spray. I suppose you could put pepper or perfume on your scarecrow - the deer might not like that smell.
I have lavender and rosemary everywhere inside ready to go outside soon....
YIPPEEE!!
Ginger
Haven't been there this year yet, but Fred Meyer has carried mobiles in their garden department the last couple of years that are made with beads and mirrors. They catch any beam of light and flash it around the yard, which is not only pretty, but has worked as a really good deer deterrant for me...on top of being pretty!
ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.. that sounds like it might attract rarejems, jays, gourdbeaders & julies to my yard....(Sounds like a flock of unusual birds...LOL)
Ginger
Love the gnome gardens Anjl. So cute.
I like your flock of unusual birds.
Anjl, that is too cute, I might be able to pull something like that off.
Katie, thanks for the links.
Ginger, that's a nice visual image - a flock of different kinds of birds checking themselves out and taste-testing the mirrors and baubles. I wonder if they'd keep doing it once they found out nothing tasted any good.
LOL! Aren't there birds that collect pretty shiny things that serve no purpose whatsoever other than being pretty and shiny?
Crows do that.
I think we all do that :-)
Birds and beaders.....oh and ferrets...
Ginger
I must be a cross between a crow and a pack rat. I love to collect totally worthless shiny things.
BTW, thanks for the link.
Julie, I just planted some of the plants you gave me. The Hellebore is very pretty. Thanks again.
Lynn you and I must be the same hybrid.......
I've decided it's a virtue. :-)
Lynn, glad you liked the helebore...bet you spent a lot of time planting this week! LOL! You haven't shown off your haul to the forum yet!
As for the whole collecting thing, I can't remember which forum I was on, but someone had made a point that if you talk to most avid gardeners, you will find that they are also usually animal and nature lovers, avid collectors of some type or another, and avid craftspeople of one type or another. He said that you will rarely find an avid gardner who just "dabbles" in something...we jump in with both feet and go for it, no matter what we do. Sometimes it will be a phase, and sometimes we will find something that will be a lifetime focus...but either way it's never approached meekly. He said it in much better words that I did, and I wish I could find the post, but I just remember reading through it and saying to myself "yeah, that's me" "yeah, that's me".
Actually, today was the first day I planted anything. I worked hard on rearranging and cleaning house. I absolutely couldn't stand some of the clutter anymore. Now my office is enjoyable to go into, rather than looking through the French doors and sighing.
I can't decide where to place my new goodies. I hauled some of them around to different spots in the yard, and just can't make up my mind. At least with them sitting by the door I can enjoy them every time I go outside. I need to research how big the trees will get.
Ok, here is my favorite newcomer, Betula Pendula Youngii Serpentine. It needs to be in a special place where it is protected from the wind, I think. Don't know how tall it will get.
I just spent the last hour looking at the Fairy links. Is there a place to buy locally? Now I want to "borrow" granddaughter's dollhouse accessories!
Lynn, Mine is all unplanted as well, although I use the bunches of snow we had the next day as an excuse! Finding the perfect spot sometimes takes a lot of thought. Notice you still had our snow in your background!
I made the signs myself, but went shopping today at a craft store near our cabin. They have lots of dollhouse furniture, so I picked up a few terra cotta pots, an old fashioned wellpump, and a lil watering can each were $2 apiece. They had lots of garden props for doll houses, also had signs n such. really cute stuff lol! I was going the cheapy route lol!
Lynn...I love the shape of that tree! Such an interesting addition for your garden.
Love the gnome talk, I've always had garden folk, but never built them their own little neighborhood. LOL
