Gnomes, Fairies and other garden friends

Eugene, OR

As you can tell by my fairies, I like the simple ones too. Congratulations on your first gnome, has he told you his name yet?

(Judi)Portland, OR

He does not have a name yet - called Mr Gnome on the Kimmel web site. I will name him when I see him. I'll post a pic and take suggestions! It may take several weeks to get him.

Eugene, OR

Oh, he has a name, he just hasn't told you yet! LOL

Julie you ROCK! Thank you so much for the link, I am going to order one this week. We are a very friendly group that likes to chat and has a tendency to get off topic :0) Very excited about your garden tour and the round-up.

I forgot about this guy. He is Content Cal. He will be Thoughtnots neighbor.

Then there is this Garden Guy.

And this guy. He has no name. But he looks like he is a relative of Sofer's.

Willowwind.. I love your hiding garden guy! What a neat surprise when walking through the garden. I haven't seen anything yet that I wouldn't love to add to my ever growing collection. We have lots of property, but live in a little "tube" (ok.... to use proper terminology and not offend my DH, it is a single wide which I would only concede to live in if my husband built me at least a dining room and laundry room so we could sit down and eat and I had somewhere to put my vacuum!) which we put in as a temporary house over 10 years ago and are still in. Doesn't bother me so much any more as I have learned to decorate outside rather than in!

Great thread to have on the PNW forum, Rachel! Of course, I love all your gnomes, especially the old ones from your grandparents. And all the fairy photos are wonderful. Alas, I have no photos of my fairies as they do not like to have their photograph taken, believing that it somehow steals a part of their souls. No amount of explaining appears to change this belief.
The gnomes, however, gladly pose for photos. This one was taken during the Christmas season of 2007. They do like to visit one another's homes.

Two elderly Scandinavian gnomes. They don't make many public appearances and have retired to an easy life counting clover, after a long life of hard work in the garden. I believe I owe them security and comfort in their old age.

These two men have been 'partners' for many years. This is their home on Open Garden Day. They stand ready to greet visitors. You should have heard them arguing about which flowers to put in the front area and which color combinations to use! They crack me up.

This is a British gnome who is generally up to no good. He has an attitude, as you can see. If I remember correctly, he was stubbornly staying put until someone gave into his wishes about grooming the Ceonothus on the left.

This guy hails from the British Isles as well. He more than makes up for the attitude of the previous gnome with his willing hard work and cheerful demeanor. If I ever need kindling, he's the man.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

You gals have some great little dudes!

(Judi)Portland, OR

I got an email saying that my gnome has shipped and is on his way to me. Soon I will have a little garden friend!

FYI a new thread has been started about the August PNW Round-Up http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/962968/

Those are precious. I especially love the door.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

I have fun with them....I am hoping to find a suitable old stump or piece of driftwood for the yard as a place for the door and centerpiece for a Fairie Garden...

(Judi)Portland, OR

Gname this gnome! He's my first gnome and seems happy here but I can't think of a good name.

He does look happy..and intelligent and thoughtful. HMMMM....

Gimlet? Don't ask me why. I have no idea. It just came to me.

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

Gust-off! He is very handsome. Love the mossy rock.

I posted my garden tour over on the 'Spring in my garden' thread.

Eugene, OR

Dumbledore......he looks very wise.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

How about Gnemo the Gnome?

(Judi)Portland, OR

Great suggestions everyone - I am making a list. I want to see how he behaves with all the spring-time temptations in the garden.

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Gnils?

(Judi)Portland, OR

I think Pix has been having cocktails!

Eugene, OR

Teeheehee!

Olympia, WA(Zone 7b)

Gerhardt the Gnome

Don't I wish! Maybe I just NEED cocktails but don't know how to make them. I remember a friend of my mother's who used to make gimlets by the pitcher full. Hmmm. Maybe I should ask mom about her...

But I really wasn't thinking of the drink, I just like the word. It makes me think of someone who is small and full of good cheer. (No pun intended!:)

Eugene, OR

Gimlets were once my drink of choice and you're right it is just a fun/cheery word.

(Judi)Portland, OR

As much as I like the word gimlet, and all the other great suggestions, I have decided that the gnome will be named Oliver. The name Oliver is most commonly a reference to the olive tree, which represents an offer of peace. The German origin of Oliver means a member of the elf army. What could be more perfect?

Thanks all for giving me inspiration!

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

Perfect!

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Judi, love the name. Laura and I were out window shopping today and saw all kinds of Gnomes we wanted to bring home......got a lot of ideas for making some also!

(Judi)Portland, OR

Are you really going to make gnomes? Do you do it at one of those places where you paint them and they fire them for you? I've always wanted to do that!

Eugene, OR

We all want to hear about that project!!!

Judi....perfect choice, you did your homework and came up with the right name!!
