Cold and snow!
Happy Birthday Redchic01
I had little to no snow, but there was no January thaw...or February for that matter. We need a reprieve midwinter?? Maybe that's it? I do remember doing a lot of bike riding in Feb a few years ago. (quite a few)
Yep, cold and snow!!
Sorry, we missed you here ealier Sharron. Happy that you could join the party though!
So, the diagnosis is strep throat (to be hopefully cured with amoxicillin), however...might also have the beginnings of bronchiatus. He said we'll start with what we know for certain and to call him on saturday if I'm not getting better.
So hope you all continue on here, I'm off to work for a while. Have fun!!
Ugh - feel better, Shelly! Bronchitis is running wild on this forum.
Oh, Shelly, didn't know you were sick, I did not read all of the above, just hopped down here to wish you a Happy Birthday. Now I will wish you well.
Here is the pile of sticks on the west side of my driveway. you can see a little of the pile across the street. The piles are taller than I am. Can't get out into the street to get a tunnel photo, maybe tomorrow...everybody's coming in from work...
Shelly, be careful, strep is worse than bronchitis! You might want to think about taking a couple of days to take care of yourself. Work will get by without you. Really!!
Eeek. Strep is pretty specific - I would make sure that the phone, doorknobs, etc. that you use at home and at work are disinfected. Change your toothbrush, too. And stay home as much as you can - strep is pretty infectious and you don't want to share this with anybody.
Bronchitis is generally a symptom rather than a diagnosis, so as you get over this bug and get the strep under control, it may go away. No wonder you don't feel good!!
Holy cow, Sharran - that IS a lot of damage. It looks like you all will be doing some burning this spring. The birch trees here took a beating in our last ice storm. It's taken three years, but they're springing back up and branch growth has repaired some of their biggest wounds. I hope when those leaves come back it will look a little less dramatic.
Ok, Shelly, you take it easy. I think I'd rather have my symtoms than strep. That really hurts!!!
Now, Sharon, we better not hear that you've been tree-climbing and with a chain saw, too.
Guess if I tried it, you'd never hear from me again, Jan.
Shelly, you take care.
:)
Can we start a chest infection support group? Glad mine is a fading memory. Z pack was slow in clearing me up. I went straight to a 2nd Z pack.
Jan, Emma is adorable.
I join in the intolerance for the intolerant. We just had a group of High School kids create a program (their idea) to address the words kids use against other kids.Sadly, retard, the "n" word (mostly used in the new "cool" way) fag and gay are still common. Also some religous stuff. They created a great interactive program and have done it for middle school students. Its great. 34 volunteers in total reached hundreds of younger kids so far.
There are specific words that are more insulting(I guess) than others....but no one should be calling anybody names, I just remember when I was little all the adults would say "no name calling" I assumed that covered any names. You are supposed to treat people the way you would like to be treated. It seems that basic respect for others isn't taught.
Louise that was so true about retail. I found the more I worked on the sales floor the more frequent my illnesses, esp when working on the register.
That's WAY cool, Dave! I bet you all are most proud of your students.
You "guys" must be doing a good job as teachers, influencing the minds of our future!
Thank you! for all the hard work!
Sharon, I am so sad for your trees, we had our turn in 2006. Good thing trees are pretty resilient for the most part and can come back from most trauma. Still makes my heart ache to see them hurting.
Wow,Dave, I'm so happy to hear that. Keep up the good work!
Bummer on the damage, Sharon. Nice program, Dave. Hope it has an effect. Unfortunately, many adults still use these words too. And, as you said, the kids use them in different ways today. Can't tell you how many times I heard black students on the subway use the N word. It was practically every other word. And that was 25 years ago. Hasn't changed much at all.
Thanks for the many well wishes all. I'm definitely keeping my fingers crossed that the amoxicillin starts working soon!
Katie, I just finished going around the house spraying everything with Lysol (the only antibacterial spray I could find at the moment), I think that it will help. Can't hurt anyhow! i love my toothbrush though and I've only had it for a few weeks, so I think that I'll boil it for a few minutes tomorrow. I think that should kill everything. I'm glad that you mentioned that though, I wouldn't have thought about that one.
Venu... I will be off of work on Fri. Hopefully that will help. I'll play the weekend job by ear and take handiwipes with me everywhere. I dont have sick leave at either job. No work= no money. The weekday job, I don't have much leeway with so I'm hoping things will be getting back to normal by then!!
Dave, that's a great idea for a program. I sure hope it works and that other schools take notice. I would love that support group that you mentioned!!
Sharran, what a mess you had there! That's definitely an unusual form for a tunnel. I'm sure glad that everything turnde out mostly ok for you though, minus your birch tree. Hopefully you were wishing that it could be a little fuller at the top of it? at least when it grows out again.
Too bad there doesn't seem to be a good way to catch that silly bronchiatus that is running wild around here. what a mess it seems to be causing!!!
RC Take good care of yourself.
I had bronc and it developed pneumonia.
It knocked me out for a month. Meds help fast so you wont break ribs coughing.
Thanks Jo Ann, I'm definitely trying to avoid that scenario. Had that happen once before, and that was more than enough!! I'm sure glad you made it through that pneumonia though, I had a cousin that didn't. It always worries me now.
I used to get this a couple of times a year from when I was a young kid up until I was maybe 18, and what amazes me is that I think that I dealt with it much better then than I do now! That might be because of the whole issue of missing work, but I really think it was just easier to take then!! They did give me some sort of caugh medicine to take but said not to take it when driving until I know the effects, so I'm going to take it before bed here in a bit. I think that will help a bit!!
Keep on, keepin on.
doing that! :-p
Jan, are you feeling any better today?
i cant believe how many are sick.
definitely. It sure does make you wonder???
shelly take care of yourself and get some rest.
Just got on the computer for the first time today. Have been lazing on the couch all day reading. Got a book yesterday and finished it a little bit ago. Still hurt when I cough and now my sinuses are draining like mad. Thanks for the heads up about a possible second Z pack, Dave. Glad you went to Emma's website. She is a corker!. Don't know how far you went on it, but hopefully you got to see some of my niece's photos. Tara's blog is mostly photos.
That high school program sounds great. Hopefully it makes an impression.
Feel better soon, Redch
Happy belated birthday Shelly!
Yes,, I did see some of her pictures. Very talented (and lovely)!
Thanks everyone for all the nice words about our program. We find most kids want school to feel safe & respectfull and love having a chance to talk about these issues. It's not to hard to motivate them to change the culture a bit. What is hard is maintaining the change.
Full disclosure: I'm not a teacher. I run a small social service dept. that works closely with the schools. I'm actually a therapist by training, but I'm in recovery.
Thanks, Dave. I'll pass that on to her.
Thanks Debilu! happy to have you Join in!
Thanks Bill, I'm doing that today. I'm not sure about tomorrow. They're saying that the snow may start in the afternoon, if that happens I may be able to get away without talking that much. That would be good! Although, snow... bad!
Dave, your job sounds very interesting and rewarding. although, there's always going to be heartbreaking situations with that sort of job, but at least there's many good stories as well.
Yes! Good thing is we do positive youth development as well as counseling so we get a good mix of healthy positive stuff along with the pain.
Hard to learn to not bring it home with you, too, isn't it Dave?
Really late to this thread---so sorry about everyone's sickness--bake out in this weekend's sun---but Shelley, you need to stay in & warm! Sorry I missed the b-day wishes! Jan, my DH's niece has Downs---she is over 40, & has now been diagnosed with Alzheimer's----she does manage to work 1 day a week, & still remembers who we are, even though we only get to NH about 3 times a year.
My callous indifference to other people's pain is a big plus in that regard.
Just joking. It is hard. But I think you learn to accept what you cannot change or you burn out. Always toughest with abused kids. Physically, sexually or severely emotionally.
Robin, tough break for your neice.
I think Downs syndrone people have a lot to teach us.
That's awful, Robin. Hopefully meds can slow it.
best of wishes to your niece
When I was in high school I did volunteer work twice a week at a residential center for children with Downs Syndrome. They touched my heart so deeply with their gentle innocence and huge smiles. I made the big mistake of caring too much about several of them....went away to college and came home at Christmas.....went out to see them and one had died. Painful, but I have always had a very big place in my heart for those with DS. I love that our grocery store here hires lots of people with DS and disabilities. I enjoy bantering with them every week.
Robin - I'm so sorry to hear that your niece now has Alzheimer's. That's a very tough break.
There's a purity of soul in Downs people.
That is so right, Victor!
