North CENTRAL TX RU **April 5th ** in ARL>>> (TRADES #2)

Clifton, TX(Zone 8a)

I don't have any plants to trade yet other than a snake plant that I have to split up. Have lots of things coming up but just not sure what will survive by the trade. I would love any kind of roses and daylilies if anyone has extras. I will put up my list when it gets closer to the swap and I see what I have.

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

I started posting a few things on my trade list yesterday. Will post more as I see what's coming up.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Patty, may i have some coneflowers? please pick whatever you like from my list.
Josephine.

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

Jenepat, the Paddle Plant (Kalanchoe luciae) looks so interesting. I would love to try it. No problem for the salvia.

North Richland Hills, TX(Zone 8a)

pbtxlady - can I get your angel-wing begonia? let me know if there's anything on my list that you'd like!

Jennifer

North Richland Hills, TX(Zone 8a)

Sounds like a trade Anna! I just got my paddle plant at the Fall RU & it's been doing wonderfully in my sunroom. I was so happy to see the volunteers pop up that I could share with others. I'll definitely put your name on one.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

pbtxlady~Can I have some toad lilies and an obedient plant? Let me know if you would like anything from my list.

North Richland Hills, TX(Zone 8a)

Sheila - can I get some of your Liarope? Let me know what I can mark you down for from my list.

Thanks!
Jennifer

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

sure thing, got you all. I'm in a rush so I'll have to look at lists later.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks, Patty!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Anna, can I get a blackfoot daisy?

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

No problem. Saw some volunteers the other day.

oldmansdarlin, I don't have many daylilys (i've managed to avoid the temptation for years.lol) Your welcome to any of the roses I have tho :0)

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

oldmansdarlin, I will probably have some extra. Come by my table.

Clifton, TX(Zone 8a)

cocoa_lulu & bananna18, I will be sure to visit you both. I just ordered hyacinth beans. Yellow & white variety. As soon as I get them I will be indoor starting them so hopefully I will have some ready for the trade. I noticed that these seem to be rare on everyone's list. I also have a bunch of other starters working. Hopefully I can keep them alive till then. Oh, I just can't wait for spring & the round up. This is just so exciting.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Thank you Anna! Hope they survived last night's chilly temps.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Jenepat..... all of the Liarope can be yours if you can use it. I will check your items later.

North Richland Hills, TX(Zone 8a)

Sheila - I've never had Liarope before, but the pictures look gorgeous. It looks like there's the smallar variety (like traditional "monkey grass" in my mind), and a larger variety that would make a good stand-alone ornamental grass w/ purple flower spikes. Which type do you have? (Or am I off base in my observation?)

My big project this year is filling up this lasagna bed I started last fall. Here's what it looked like afterI got all my layers in. I'm hoping it's ready dig through and plant in by the end of March. I was thinking I could put a few clumps of the Liarope thoughout the bed (if it was the larger type), along with daylilies and ??? Or if the liarope is the smaller clumps more often used for border plants, I could maybe put it somewhere else.

On a different note...any ideas you guys have on how best to fill this bed are welcome!

After 46 years experience I can tell you this much. The tiny lariope takes forever to spread.. The larger size will take over the entire bed in about 2 years and it is near to impossible to get rid of it. I love it under certain circumstances but have learned the hard way to be very, very careful where you plant it.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

That bed looks great Jenepat.
Josephine.

So much fun to have a blank canvas that has such good soil. You are sure to fill it up after the RU.Is it in the sun?

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

DATURA12, do you use the forsythe propagation method for roses?

North Richland Hills, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks guys. It does get quite a bit of afternoon sun. At least that area did last year. The part closest to the fence on the long stretch is shaded slightly from the fence because of the angle of the sun. And there are some trees behind the fence that may be taller this year and provide more shade. I guess time will tell.... I plan to plant mostly stuff that can take full sun b/c I think that would be safest. If I find they don't bloom/fill-in as well b/c of the shade, I can transplant them to a different area in the fall.

So LouC - do you think it would be a mistake to plant a few clumps of the larger Liarope throughout my bed if I don't want them to take over? Ideally, I'd love it if the clump(s) could pretty much stay to themselves - of course I could divide every few years as necessary.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

jenepat... I would not plant it as a border, but around the base of your tree it might work. It is the larger plant not monkey grass as you mentioned and is too tall for a border, unless the plants are established. I have it around a pecan tree right now, and did have it on either side of my waterfall. It really kept the dirt there in place, but we took it out to put some more tropical plantings there. It doesn't spread real fast for me, but does have dense roots.
I would love to have a Lenape and Maudie M canna from you.

That pond is so pretty Sheila.

North Richland Hills, TX(Zone 8a)

Sounds great Sheila. I'm sure I can find a spot for all the Liarope. Thanks for the info on it.

I'll be happy to set aside a Lenape and Maudie Malcolm canna for you. These are from the recent co-op and should be delivered to me the week before the RU. But if something goes wrong with the shipping timeline, I can always deliver them to you after the fact - I work in Fort Worth. :)

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

k, I've had more time now--added a couple of things and got a chance to look at some lists.

Jenepat, do you still have any hyacinth bean seeds?

Stephanie, if you still have May Night salvia, would you please save it for me?

Josephine, it looks like I lost my little Argentine Skies salvia over the winter, so if you still have some, I'd love one, please.

I do not yet see signs of life from my Lady in Red salvia, either, and it's one of my favorites. I also don't see any signs of my winter-sowed seeds sprouting. Does anyone have one that made it through? Or, if not, know whether or not the seeds should be up by now?

North Richland Hills, TX(Zone 8a)

pbtxlady - I have plenty of Hyacinth Bean seeds I can bring you. I'll set aside a nice little baggie for you.

Thanks for the trade!
Jennifer

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh, forgot... my old-fashioned Shasta daisies got eaten last year by the cypress vine. Haven't seen that on a list--does anyone have one to trade?

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

Thank you, Jennifer!

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Patty you have the Argentine Skies.
Josephine.

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks, Josephine. ::beam::

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Pbtx~I have put you down for one May Night Salvia. I also have a Shasta Daisy "Becky" coming up that I can dig up for you if you'd like that, too.

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

Becky would be wonderful--that's the one I lost. Thank you!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I'll put you down for it, then! I thought I'd pulled all of these up last fall, but this one survived just for you. :)

Pattie, are the Ladies in Red annuals (don't have that one)? Most of my annual salvia don't germinate until the night temps hit 70 or so...don't give up yet :0)

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

I don't know if they're annuals or not--my first time to grow it. It's first cuz to the coral nymph, which is leafing out already, so EYE thought LIR should too. But I saved seeds just in case it's an annual.

We need to get together and compare notes about winter-sown stuff. I only have two that have germinated yet. The hollyhocks and cuphea came up right away, and then had to be protected the rest of the winter! But I know some of the others are easy germinators. Maybe I just have spring fever and need to be patient. :)

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I have a hummingbird salvia that survived the winter outside in the ground!! It's got buds on it!

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

'Lady in Red' acts like a perennial for me and self-sows like crazy. I don't see any seedlings yet this spring, but I'll bet when it warms up, they will be there. I should have plenty to bring for you, Pattie, if you still want them next month. Some good soaking rain would help everything! I have some shasta daisies too, variety unknown, if you'd like more.

Southlake, TX(Zone 8a)

Patrob,

May I have some applemint for some noid daylilies? My father is a hybridizer and I get some very pretty leftovers, but only a few named ones. I do have Prankster which he is pumping up for awards on the May nat'l tour here in Ft Worth in May.
